A TMCC COURSE ASSESSMENT REPORT (CAR) Revised 08/0 1/2011 Course Prero:, Number and Title: CIT 257- Web Languages SchooVUnit: Division of Sciences/Computer Technologies Submitted by: Cindy Mortensen Contributing Faculty: Academic Year: 2011-2012 Complete and electronically submit your assessment report to your Department Chair/Coordinator/Director. As needed, please attach supporting documents and/or a narrative description of the assessment activities in your program or discipline. Course Outcomes In the boxes below, summarize the outcomes assessed in your course during the year. Outcome #I Students will demonstrate an understanding of URL variables and how to use them. Outcome# 2 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the basic database manipulation functions via a request passed from web page. New: The student will implement the use of persistent data in a phone app. Use of Results Effect on Course In the boxes below, summarize In the boxes below, summarize the methods used to assess course the results of your assessment activities during the last year. outcomes during the last year. In the boxes below, summarize how you are or how you plan to use the results to improve student learning. Based on the results of this assessment, will you revise your outcomes? If so, please summarize how and why in the boxes below: The student will demonstrate an understanding of URL variables and how to use them by completing programming projects that will be evaluated using a predefined rubric. Students averaged 97.5% on a project demonstrating the use of the URL query string variables in a request to Google Maps. URL variables are used in App Inventor as part of the query string sent to an Activity Starter element that will open Google Maps at a defined location, with certain properties in place. This outcome could be revised to include other programming such as animation. The student will demonstrate the use of both an internal and an external database for persistent data in an Android phone app, by completing projects that will be evaluated using a predefined rubric. All students created an application that successfully implemented storing and retrieving infonnation to both an internal database and an external database. Students successfully stored and retrieved database infonnation in several different types of mobile applications. This outcome will be revised to reflect the use of a phone app, not a webpage; the measure will reflect the two different database options available for our Android phone environment. (Nonna! database manipulations functions are not available to the students in the App Inventor user interface.) Assessment Measures Assessment Results Page 1 - .... New: The student will create an Android app utililizing locationawareness and/or orientation, and communication. Assessment Measures The student will incorporate communication (texting), location awareness and/or orientation and communication (texting) in creative projects, and that are evaluated using a predefined rubric. Assessment Results Use of Results Students averaged 86.7% on a creative project app that implemented communication (texting), location awareness (GPS), and/or orientation. This outcome is a good measure of the implementation of intrinsic smart phone features. Effect on Course This outcome was revised to reflect actual smart phone capabilities, such as locationawareness, orientation, and communication.
