Outcome#l Students will demonstrate an understanding of major theories in Psychology, which includes understanding and identifying key concepts in the following theories/areas: Leaming, Personality, Neuroscience, Developmental, Cogntive and Motivation/emotion. For fall 2012 we created assessment quizzes with questions from chapter 7 - Leam~ng and Chapter 13 - Psycholog ical Disorders.. Based on the results of this assessment, will you revise your outcomes? If so, please summarize how and why in the boxes below: Students completed a "conceptual" and an "application" quiz for chapter 7 (Leaming) and Chapter 13 (Psychological d isorders). Mastery was defined as earning a 65% on each quiz. The average of student's performance (percentage of correct answers) in all classes was compared with the average of students' performance in classes taught by full-time (FT) and part-time (PT) faculty. In order to identify strengths and weaknesses of curricula an item analyses was conducted and the results were examined in terms of percentage of correct answers for each question. On chapter 7 conceptual quiz the overall average (results from students taught by full-time and part-time faculty combined was 63%; students taught by FT had an average of 66% and students taught by PT had an average of 59%. The specific questions that less than 65% of the students answered correctly reflected under-developed comprehension on concepts described below. Chapter 7 - Leaming: conditioned and unconditioned stimulus and responses in classical conditioning; the role of cognitive process in operant conditioning; the difference between positive and negative reinforcement, and punishment; intermittent schedules of reinforcement, conditioned Chapter 7 - Leaming has been known as a "problem" content area in psychology. Previous assessment has shown that students have difficulties mastering theories of learning specially operant conditioning and schedules of reinforcement. The results of fall 2012 assessment will be shared with psychology faculty emphasizing what areas our students need support with. The identified areas where students did not master content will be shared with faculty in an effort to generate ideas and support faculty improving teaching methodology. Psychology faculty will be encouraged to develop expanded content and/or instructional methods to address these content areas. On Chapter 13 - Psychological Disorders students didn't meet expectations in comprehending: self-fulfilling prophecies; the prevalence of depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and histrionic personality disorder. Outcome# 2 Students will understand and apply basic research methods in psychology, including research design, data analysis and interpretation. Outcome #3 Students will be able to utilize basic research skills to carry out research on a psychological topic. The psychology department developed an assessment cycle for the different teaming outcomes. In fall 2012 this outcome was not assessed. Same as above.
