Math Replacement Update November 13, 2015 Topics Covered Students review basic place-value concepts for whole numbers. They express whole numbers as sums of ones, tens, hundreds, and so on, and observe the relationship between such sums and the way numbers are read. Students guess, estimate, and then count the number of objects in a container. They tally the class results in a chart and find the minimum, maximum, range, and mode for the data. Topics Covered Students review place-value concepts and write numbers in expanded notation. They review addition of whole numbers and decimals with the partial-sums and column-addition methods. Apply place-value concepts to read, write, and interpret large numbers. Students add and subtract decimals. They also round decimals and convert metric units. Students practice the trade-first method of subtraction. Students develop strategies for multiplying by positive and negative powers of 10. Students develop strategies to estimate the time it would take to walk from school to a designated location.
