Constitution Dietetic Technician Organization I. Objective: 1) to begin a student DTR organization in the college focusing on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and healthy eating habits 2) to involve and encourage the college and the community through a number of various activities in which the college can benefit by having students become involved with other fellow students; spark an interest in those that may not know what career path to take; encourage students enrolled in the DTR program provide them hands-on experience and skill needed as a stepping stone to be more involved in the TMCC College and outside community 3) individuals involved will benefit by developing leadership skills which include communication, goal setting, motivation, learning styles, planning, conflict resolution, time management and being proactive with problem solving; individuals will also gain networking skills through meeting and becoming better acquainted with student members and outside community members; lastly individuals will gain self-confidence through accomplishments and using education, technical skills and human relations skills II. DTR Program Goals: 1) provide and ensure a high quality student organization that reflects relevant and current dietetic practices and updated information with reference by the ADA Association 2) help student members build and foster collaborative relationships for community health promotion with other fellow student members while making new networks within the community 3) contribute to TMCC community by providing information about the importance of nutrition and physical activity; students will be responsible and provide events at the school such as health fairs, wellness checkups (BMI, IBW; provide information about being heart-healthy) and have fun taste-testers of nutritional foods 4) encourage student members to participate and be involved in the ADA, NDA, NNDDA organizations; marketing students to meet other dietetic professionals and attend conferences with affect current issues and dietetic practices 5) Market the DTR program to high schools and encourage the importance of a college education; make new contacts along with contacts of DTR Program for student organization to volunteer for events and meetings III. Academic Focus 1) to discuss current issues on class curriculum, update information from ADA organization and latest updates regarding issues that emphasize DTR Programs and requirements; 2) Provide learning tools and skills for students to build upon IV. Social/Special Interest 1) provide necessary skills needed for students to build networks for themselves as well as benefiting the organization and TMCC community 2) to give an environment where students can get involved with one another and build relationships. V. Service/Special Project Interest 1) provide enhanced and expanded leadership experiences and opportunities for student members Example: Attend annual NDA Conference Workshops Be involved with health-related volunteer organizations Volunteer Organizations to consider: a) American Heart Association b) American Diabetic Association c) American Lung Association d) other various health-related local volunteer organizations Provide community involvement through education and acknowledgement about DTR Program Challenges & Opportunities for Student Organization Opportunities: 1) great for resume! 2) provide experience in being independent and interdependent; provide experience in team dynamics and goal setting within a functional group 3) gain experience in collaborating different learning styles and techniques with other student members 4) will also provide skills in organization skills, ability to multi-task and great communication skills Challenges: 1) time management with student schedules conflicting with events, health fairs, and monthly meetings 2) committed student members who have the time and are able to commit 100% to ensure that organization is properly functioning 3) finding contacts who are willing to provide experience, expertise for DTR organization to gain community involvement and experience Mission of the Dietetic Technician Program The mission of the TMCC Dietetic Technician Program is to: Provide quality, affordable, accessible educational experience in the dietetic areas of food and nutrition services Serve the needs of residents and employers statewide Present opportunities for professional enhancement in the dietetic field Mission of the Dietetic Technican Student Organization The mission of the TMCC Dietetic Technician Student Organization is to: Commitment to excellent quality and experience to the college and community through the organization objectives, goals and various events Contribute to TMCC community and outside community by providing the most current up-todate information about nutrition and physical activity while providing events that interact with other TMCC students and outside community residents Encourage students to participate and be involved with other dietetic professionals and organizations; encourage participation in additional education training such as workshops, conferences, etc Organization Members: Officer Selection/Criteria Duties and Responsibilities *Graduate Mentor* 1) must be an active member of least (2) accredited association at a city, state, or national level Examples would be: American Dietetic Association Nevada Dietetic Association Northern Nevada Dietetic Association Advisory Board Member for Dietetic Tech Program at TMCC 2) individual is a part/full time student at either TMCC or UNR. Must be still enrolled in TMCC Dietetic Program or UNR Dietetic Program/Nutritional Science Program. 3) responsibility is to overall ensure that organization is fulfilling their objectives/goals while abiding to policies and procedures 4) attend and “supervise” organization events and functions to ensure the desired plans and objectives are met 5) possess leadership skills and provide advice when needed and be an example for officials and members of professionalism, coaching, training and being a mentor President 1) must be an active member of at least (2) accredited associations at a city, state, or national level Examples would be: American Dietetic Association Nevada Dietetic Association Northern Nevada Dietetic Association Advisory Board Member of DTR Program at TMCC 2) must be at least a part/full-time student attending TMCC and enrolled in the DTR Program 3) responsible for the overall operations, marketing, strategy, financing, creating the organization culture, compliance with policies and procedures, public relations and actively seeking committed student members and ensure excellent team building skills 4) responsible to ensure that organizations abides and fulfills to commit to organization mission statement, objectives and goals while following TMCC Policies and Procedures for a recognized student organization 5) possess leadership skills; participate and encourage collaborative learning with other officer members and student members 6) notify officers and student members about important meetings, deadlines and events as well as monthly highlights 7) meet with officers on a monthly basis about policies and procedures, updates over dietetic information, progress of enrollment and future events and strategic planning 8) to market proficiently to TMCC Community and outside community about the DTR Program and the student organization Vice President 1) must be an active member of at least (1) accredited association at a city, state, or national level Examples would be: American Dietetic Association Nevada Dietetic Association Northern Nevada Dietetic Association 2) must be a part-time/full-time student attending TMCC and be enrolled in the DTR Program 3) The vice president works with the class president and other officers in planning, organizing, and implementing organization programs. In the absence of the president, the vice president exercises the powers and duties of the president. 4) correlate by providing strategic leadership with President for development of student organization; will help to guide the development of the overall leadership structure, strategic planning, create innovative goals and ideas and oversee the quality outcomes to ensure organization is committed and fulfills obligations Secretary 1) must be a part/full time student attending TMCC and enrolled in the DT Program or a related health care profession 2) member of at least (1) accredited association at a city, state or national level Examples would be American Dietetic Association Nevada Dietetic Association Northern Nevada Dietetic Association 3) responsible on updated student member list including current student information and records; responsible for the locations, times of activities of student organization events; keep updates on current news and post a summary about any highlights or information regarding the student organization of information that is useful and related towards the organization 4) responsible of keeping files for monthly meetings and minutes with a short summary of each meeting; generate an outline of what each monthly meeting will cover 5) keep updates and notify President/Vice President of any changes with policies and procedures of student organizations and post updates to ASTM Government Student Member of summaries of events, meetings and gatherings that the student organization participates in 6) keep update information about upcoming events, contact information for community involvement etc Treasurer 1) member of at least (1) accredited association at a city, state or national level Examples would be: American Dietetic Association Nevada Dietetic Association Northern Nevada Dietetic Association 2) must be a part/full time student attending TMCC or related healthcare profession 3) responsible and heavily involved with strategic planning and finances for every event and program the organization undertakes; must possess skills of patience, diplomacy and attention to detail; 4) responsible for the financial resources and liabilities of the student organization; needs to be knowledgeable with budgets and maintain all financial records of organization programs 5) responsible to give monthly financial reports at monthly meetings to let student members and officers know about the financial budgets and outcomes for all organization programs Decision Making Principles 1) encourage student members and officers to voice opinions and new ideas; create an atmosphere of a win-win situations that satisfies both organization and members involved 2) to make note that decisions also correlate with policies and are viable to improve the organization while enhancing student learning experiences 3) by a majority vote of the student members and officials Meeting Locations, Dates and Times 1) depending on officer and student schedules; shooting for the 1st week of each month Times of meeting would be a 5:30pm - 7:00pm or 7:00pm - 8:30pm or adjust to officer and student work/school schedules 2) location on RDMT 115; provided by Student Leadership and Coordinator Jennifer Williams
