The Green Gazette Isaac Fox Elementary January 15, 2016 SHARING CORNER Curriculum At A Glance Your children deserve a round of applause for another amazing reading accomplishment. They read just over 12,000 minutes in the month of December. This is their highest combined total so far this year! Way to go!! Hopefully the children are reading a variety of genres and having good book talks with you. Please encourage your child to take advantage of the online reading tool myON. Let me know if you need another copy of the introductory letter that contains your child’s password. Your children have added a new comprehension strategy to their repertoire – inferencing. We learned four things we can try to infer (figure out) the meaning of a new word. Please ask your child if he/she can name one or more of them. Literacy- First graders are studying the long vowel sounds, with our recent emphasis being long O. This week we are also expanding our knowledge of contractions. The children are now learning a new genre of writing – personal narrative. A personal narrative is a true story about something that happened to you. Some important rules for this type of writing are to focus on ONE special time, use the word “I,” and include details that tell more. I’ve been reading aloud narrative stories and the children identify the various components. The students are also practicing using a Story Map to help organize their ideas before writing. As a reminder, I represent our first grade team on the District 95 Literacy Committee. As a result, there are five days that I am out of the classroom. This week I attended the third meeting, and the final two are scheduled for February 3rd and March 2nd. Mrs. Green Social Studies- Through active discussions and activities, your children have learned how to distinguish between needs as things we must have to survive and wants as things it would be nice to have. They created a class chart that clearly demonstrated food, clothing, and shelter as needs. They took the assessment this week. Next week we will be exploring the groups that we belong to: school, family, and community. Math- I am so proud of the effort the children have been putting toward strengthening their knowledge of doubles facts. Connecting “doubles” to familiar situations often helps children remember them. For example, two hands show “double 5 is 10,” an an egg carton shows “double 6 is 12,” and two weeks on a calendar shows “double 7 is 14.” As doubles facts become automatic, it makes it easier for us to use this knowledge to help solve related facts, such as Doubles +1 and Doubles +2. The Doubles assessment was given today. If these facts are still not automatic for your child, please continue reviewing them at home.
