▓
Foreword
Founded in 1986 as Kaohsiung Polytechnic Institute, I-Shou University has become a well-developed comprehensive
institution of higher education, and is accredited by the Ministry of Education as a university for teaching excellence.
The inauguration of Yanchao Campus in 2006 creates a better learning and training environment for students majoring
in medical disciplines by promoting close cooperation between medicine-related departments and E-DA Hospital. In
addition to the establishment of the School of Chinese Medicine for Post Baccalaureate in the Academic Year 2010,
the University will further establish the School of Medicine for Post Baccalaureate by general consent of the Ministry of
Education dated July 23, 2012. The newly-established program is scheduled to begin admitting international students in
the Academic Year 2013 with all courses taught in English, the new dawn in the establishment of the College of Medicine
for which the University has long striven. Also, the International College established in 2009 has continuously recruited
faculty members from around the world and offered courses taught entirely in English to provide a total immersion
learning environment in English and help students get well prepared for further studies abroad, with the purpose of
enhancing their capabilities for cross-border learning and employability.
In addition, the University enthusiastically welcomed the establishment of two new colleges in the Academic Year
2011: the College of Communication & Design and the College of Tourism & Hospitality, which provide a favorable
learning and training environment for students who wish to work in cultural and creative industries or in the service
sector. Graduates from the University will surely find a secure foothold in both the cross-strait and global workplaces.
The Academic Year 2011 also saw the establishment of the Indigenous Development Center (approved by the Ministry
of Education) as well as indigenous programs of the College of Communication & Design and the College of Tourism
& Hospitality. Such programs aim to develop the potential of indigenous youths, boost the productivity of indigenous
tribes in order to help indigenous people’s financial conditions, and raise their socioeconomic status, thereby promoting

international exchanges and setting an example of multicultural development. In 2012, the College of Electrical &
Information Engineering and the College of Science & Engineering (a total of nine departments and twenty-nine
programs) earned IEET accreditation, and the University passed the University Evaluation of the Higher Education
Evaluation & Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT) successfully, receiving official recognition of the University’s firstclass education. The University also hosted the National Intercollegiate Athletic Games in 2012, and the President of the
Republic of China, Dr. Ying-Jeou Ma, and Minister of Education, Dr. Wei-Ling Chiang, highly appreciated the University’s
devotion to Taiwan’s education, thereby enhancing the University’s visibility and status on the island.
In addition to academic achievements, the University has always had a part to play in promoting international
exchanges. According to the survey results of resources for internationalization among sixty-five universities in Taiwan in
the Academic Year 2011 announced by Cheers Magazine, the University was at the top of the list in terms of “Number of
Mainland Chinese Exchange Students,” “Number of Exchange Students to Mainland China” and “Number of International
Double Degree Programs.” In addition to Xuehai and Xuewen scholarship programs which offer hard-working students
an opportunity for overseas study tours free of charge, the Eagle-Flying Scholarship program further offers elite students
an opportunity to study abroad free of charge during the senior year.
The university growth fostered by unceasing efforts and steady work of all the faculty, staff and students over the
past twenty-one years has been the talk of Taiwan society. We would like to share the University’s achievements with
everyone who cares about it by publishing the I-Shou University Yearbook annually. At the same time, we hope that
we can encourage and remind one another to continue improving, show the best of the University, and accomplish our
lifelong mission of nurturing highly educated professionals for our country.

ÔÔPerformance of Industry-University Collaboration and Incubation
1. Formation of Industry-University Collaboration Alliance: The University has signed a strategic alliance agreement with some 313
companies and organizations as of Jun. 4, 2012, including TSE-listed companies, OTC-listed companies, R&D centers, and
small and medium enterprises. As the leading industry-university collaboration alliance in Taiwan, the University not only invites
corporate CEOs to give keynote speeches and serve as members to the Curriculum Committee and part-time lecturers, but also
offers preferential tuition rates to employees of these companies. The faculty of the University provides assistance to companies in
applying for projects subsidized by the government, such as Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR), Conventional Industry
Technology Development (CITD) and Technology Development Program, while companies provide employment courses and
internship positions to students.
2. Integration of Resources within E United Group: The Center for Incubating Innovation and Industry-University Collaboration is
designated to integrate the resources of the University and E United Group, to expand the cooperation between the University and
affiliated entities of E United Group, and to broaden the faculty members’ practical experiences and increase students’ internship
opportunities.
3. Seeking Opportunities of Industry-University Collaboration: Teachers are encouraged to seek cooperation with industries and R&D
centers as well as applying for subsidies from government agencies, such as the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), National
Science Council (NSC), the Department of Health and local governments. The industry-university collaboration can present R&D
achievements and contribute to production and quality improvement. In the Academic Year 2011 (as of Jun. 4, 2012), a total of 140
industry-university collaboration projects were carried out at the University, and the total funding reached NT$80,123,316.
4. Seeking Corporate Donations: As the subsidy from the Ministry of Education is shrinking, corporate donations are one of the major
funding sources for the University to improve the quality of teaching as well as purchasing facilities required.
5. Establishing Connections with Industries: By actively participating in industry-university consortiums of industrial parks, including:
Southern Taiwan Science Park, Kaohsiung Science Park, Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park, Export Processing Zone of
MOEA and Kaohsiung Software Technology Park, the University establishes a close relation with business entities in these industrial
parks and aims at seeking opportunities of industry-university collaboration. Moreover, the University goes into partnership with
matching platforms of various R&D centers, such as Southern Taiwan R&D Resource Sharing Center of Industrial Technology
Research Institute, Electric Vehicle Industry Clusters Platform of Metal Industries Research & Development Centre, and Counseling
Platform for the Enterprises of Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park.
6. Showcasing R&D Achievements: To present teachers’ capability in developing industry-university collaboration and incubation,
the University organizes internal and external seminars on application for projects subsidized by the government, such as SBIR,
CITD and Technology Development Program. Besides, the University organizes workshops, forums and exhibitions to showcase
achievements in technology transfer, and interviews with the faculty members are arranged as well.
7. Establishing Industry-University Collaboration Platform: The University weighs up its faculty members’ R&D capacity and equipment
at every department/institute to compile the “Handbook of Research and Development Achievements.” The University also
establishes the Industry-University Collaboration Platform to carry out the project matching between companies and professors.
8. Achievements in Incubation:
(1) In the Academic Year 2011, 25 companies sought cooperation with the Center of Incubating Innovation and Industry-University
Collaboration, which in turn promoted 16 industry-university collaboration projects with the total funding reaching NT$1,995,000.
(2) MicroLinks Technology Corp. was selected by the Small and Medium Enterprise Administration, the Ministry of Economic
Affairs, as one of the inspiring examples of incubation with the support of a center for incubation, innovation and industryuniversity collaboration in 2011.
(3) Testfine Technologies Company received a subsidy from Kaohsiung City Government for one local SBIR project in 2011 and a
government subsidy for one CITD project from the Industrial Development Bureau, the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2011.
(4) Chuan Sheng Automation Co., Ltd. received a government subsidy for one CITD project from the Industrial Development
Bureau, the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2011.
(5) Hope Catering Management Co., Ltd. received a government subsidy for 2011 Computerization and IT Technology Application
Development Project from the Department of Commerce, the Ministry of Economic Affairs as well as a government subsidy
for 2012 Instant Technical Assistance Program of Small & Medium Enterprises from the Industrial Development Bureau, the

▓ Afterword
This year is special for I-Shou University!
Dr. Shen-Li Fu, the founding President as well as the Honorary President of ISU, handed over
the office in September, 2011, after serving as the University’s President for almost 21 years. His
successor, the Acting President, Dr. Wan-Long Hong, also retired from the office and the University in
February, 2012. Their efforts are greatly appreciated.
On February 1st, 2012, Dr. Jei-Fu Shaw assumed the office to lead the University in moving
forward to the next 20 years. The University has undergone two alternations of the President’s office
with seamless transition of school affairs, which is rarely seen among other universities both at home
and abroad, and could serve as an exemplar as well.
By collecting the data provided by respective units, we can clearly see the efforts put forth by
them to promote the University’s further development. After the alternations of the President’ office,
the University is expected to meet new challenges, inspire new ideas and thoughts as well as create
new prospects under the foundation currently possessed, thereby reaching another milestone.
We would like to thank both the administrative and academic units for providing appropriate
and accurate data within the prescribed period. By reading the description or numbers, we can all
feel the efforts and contribution devoted by the dedicated members of I-Shou University in pursuit
of excellence and outstanding performance. With the publication of the I-Shou University Yearbook,
the University intends to pass down the tradition as well as to show the continued determination of
moving forward. Thank you!
