Solar Desalination Team 13 Description Objectives This project will investigate the feasibility of designing a solarpowered desalination plant. The main objective of this project is to investigate the feasibility of using forward osmosis as a low energy alternative to reverse osmosis. Forward osmosis has not been used on an industrial scale before; however, it relies upon thermal energy, which can be easily integrated with solar power. Its performance will be evaluated upon energy use and cost compared to current technologies. Desalination is currently an expensive process, particularly for countries that cannot afford to run such a plant on traditional power sources. Global climate change reinforces the need for alternative methods of obtaining potable drinking water.
