Dr. Jim Duggan is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Information Technology. Both Dr. Jim Duggan and Dr.
Enda Howley have extensive experience of leading international research in the areas of complexity, artificial
intelligence and simulation.
Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web):
Evolution of Cooperation through signaling and communication
In the area of social dilemmas, the decision to cooperate with others is always a challenging one.
Common scenarios where this dilemma arises include competitive games, and even trading
environments. Inherently individuals benefit from being selfish, but there are often scenarios where
cooperation between individuals can lead to heightened mutual payoffs. Various mathematical models of
these interactions have been studied throughout the area of Game Theory. One of the best-known
examples would be the Prisoner's Dilemma. This project proposes an examination of various signalling
and communication approaches to addressing these challenges.
