FILING 990-N (e-POSTCARD)
Follow the steps below for filing the annual IRS 990-N (e-Postcard) for tax exempt
organizations.
Step 1 – Log into System



Gather needed information
Log on to http://epostcard.form990.org
Register as a new user
Step 2 – Request Login ID


If your club has never filed before, you will need to click on “Request Login ID”
o Then click “Next”
o Enter your club’s EIN: This should be the same number that is used for Club
banking and click “Next”
If your club has filed in previous years, you can skip to Step 3.
SPECIAL NOTE: Some groups will not be successful in filing a 990-N (e-Postcard). You may
receive the following message. If you do, STOP!
Print this web page with the error message as proof that you attempted to file. Keep this
with the club records.
 Do not call the IRS as the message says
 Do not worry that your attempt to file did not work
 All groups must keep documentation from the IRS in their club files – including either
conformation of successful filing or documentation of unsuccessful attempt to file
 It is better to try and fail rather than not to attempt to file.

If you successfully registered, proceed to Step 3
Step 3 – Enter your EIN


Login ID Type: Exempt Organization
Organization EIN: This should be the same number that is used for Club banking
Step 4 – Create Password





Create a password (write this down, you will need it later, also save for next year)
Enter your first/last name (whoever is entering the information)
Enter email address (this needs to be valid; you will receive an IRS email in a few
minutes with an activation link)
Enter daytime phone number
Click “Next”

Step 5 – Receive Login ID




The screen will indicate if you successfully created a login ID
You will receive an email back in a few minutes with a link
Click on the link to open the new Internet page.
Enter your password
Step 6 – Login Activated

Click on “Create Your Form 990-N”

Step 7 – Enter 990-N Information




Enter the Tax Period –
o For the Transition Year ONLY (2012) - 1/1/12 – 12/31/12
o For future years (2013-forward) – Enter 7/1/XX to 6/30/XX
Enter Business Terminated – Enter NO (unless this 4-H club has been terminated,
and if so then please also notify the County and State 4-H Office
Are gross receipts normally $50,000 or less – Enter YES –(if the club’s receipts are
more than $50,000 and less than $1,000,000, you will need to file the appropriate
990)
Click “Next”

Step 8 – Enter Principle Officer Information








Enter the name of your 4-H Club, as it is written on your Club Charter
Enter address – enter the address of your local UME 4-H Office.
Website – No website entry is necessary
Principal Officer – Select a person (person completing the form, 4-H club volunteer,
etc.)
Enter name/address/city/state/zip of the principle officer – this would be the club
name, and address of local UME 4-H office (you can’t use any periods in the address
or city)
Save changes – Print a copy
Click “Submit Filing to IRS”
You will receive another email in about 30 minutes or less letting you know if it was
accepted or rejected.
Step 9 – Review Email Acceptance and File


Print a copy of the email acceptance; keep a copy for your records
If it was rejected, make the corrections and resubmit.
