NURSING ADMINISTRATION IV: NURSING ADMINISTRATION CAPSTONE
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This practicum course provides students an opportunity to demonstrate competencies in key
elements of the Nurse Administrator role and apply the advanced practice role to a variety of
professional practice settings. Students will integrate standards of professional nursing
performance, ethical, legal and regulatory compliance to practice during a capstone project and
experience.
RATIONALE
This course provides the student an opportunity to integrate standards of professional nursing
administration performance along with ethical, legal and regulatory guidelines to practice
through a precepted practicum experience. Students will have an opportunity to complete a
capstone project that will integrate and apply theory and practice related knowledge to the role of
the Nurse Administrator. The course helps meet standards of graduate level nursing education as
articulated by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the American
Nurses Association’s Scope and Standards for Nursing Administration.

Discussion Board Forums (2)
There will be 2 Discussion Board Forums throughout this course. The student is
required to provide a thread in response to the provided topic for each forum.
Each thread is to be 500 words in length and demonstrate course-related
knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other
classmates’ threads. Each reply should be 250 words in length. The student should
post directly on the Discussion Board, no attachments please. For each thread, the
student should support his/her assertions with at least 2 scholarly citations in
current APA format. Each reply should cite at least 2 scholarly resources in
current APA format. Acceptable sources include the textbooks, the Bible, and
peer-reviewed journals.
D.
Capstone Project
This project will be completed in 3 parts:
Topic:
The student will submit a 1-page paper discussing the topic for his/her
Capstone Project. The student must include a rationale for his/her topic.
Annotated Bibliography:
The student will submit an annotated bibliography including 8–10 peer
reviewed resources written within the last 5 years, plus the textbooks and
Bible.
PowerPoint:
The student will complete a 15-slide PowerPoint presentation designed to
address the findings of the Capstone Project, application of EBP
Guidelines/Research Literature, and application to practice.

This assignment will be completed in 3 parts:
Part 1: Clinical Governance and Leadership and Ethics and Patient Rights
The student will utilize the Self-Assessment Guide for Health Care
Organizations Assessment to complete this assignment. The student will
read the introduction and preparing for the self-assessment prior to
completing the assignment. Part 1 consists of the student conducting an
assessment on 2 of the 5 criterion of the assessment: Clinical Governance
and Leadership and Ethics and Patient Rights. The student will assess,
score each criteria and provide supporting data such as name and title of
interviewee, and date of interview and/or title and number of policy. The
student will write an assessment of each criteria and identify any strengths
or gaps. A title page must be included with this assignment and not only
include the student’s name, but the name and address of the organization.
This assignment will be submitted via Safe Assign.
Part 2: Quality Measurement and Improvement and Patient Safety
Part 2 consists of the student conducting an assessment on 2 of the 5
criteria of the assessment: Quality Measurement and Improvement, and
Patient Safety. The student will assess, score each criteria and provide
supporting data such as name and title of interviewee, and date of
interview and/or title and number of policy. The student will write an
assessment of each criterion and identify any strengthen or gaps. A title
page must be included with this assignment and not only include the
student’s name, but the name and address of the organization. This
assignment will be submitted via Safe Assign.
Part 3: Facility Safety and Emergency Management
Part 3 consists of the student conducting an assessment on the last of the 5
criteria of the assessment: Facility Safety and Emergency Management
and reviewing the entire assessment and developing an action plan to
address 1 area of concern. A) The student will assess, score each criterion
and provide supporting data such as name and title of interviewee, and
date of interview and/or title and number of policy. The student will write
an assessment of each criterion and identify any strengthen or gaps. B)
The student will review the entire assessment document (all 5 areas of
assessment). The student will identify areas with gaps or needs to
strengthen the findings in order to meet the standard. Of the identified
criteria of need, the student will select 1 criterion and write an action plan.
The action plan should be 1–2 pages long and utilize the format listed on
page 85 of the assessment template. The action plan should include 3–5
resources documented in APA along with a reference page. All
assignments should contain a title page. This assignment will be submitted
via Safe Assign.
F.
Strategic Plan
This paper will be completed in 3 parts:

Topic:
The student will submit a 1-page paper discussing the topic for his/her
strategic plan paper. The student must include a rationale for his/her topic.
Annotated Bibliography:
The student will submit an annotated bibliography including 5–7 peer
reviewed resources written within the last 5 years, plus the textbooks and
Bible.
Paper:
The student will write a 6–8-page paper in current APA format that
focuses on strategic plans developed for a health care service line or
service unit assessment, planning projected implementation, and projected
outcomes. The paper must include a title page and reference page, and 5
peer reviewed articles written within the last 5 years, unless a classical or
theoretical work, in addition to the course texts and the Bible. This
assignment must be submitted via Safe Assign.
G.
Practicum/Clinical Logs (3)
The Practicum/Clinical Log is the documentation of the 200 hour practicum
experience, of which 50 hours will be completed in this course. The
documentation is to be completed in SharePoint. Instructions for setting up
SharePoint are found in the MSN Handbook. The log is to be comprehensive in
details related to the experiences in the field and reflective of the American
Nurses Association Scope and Standards of Practice for Nurse Administrator’s
competencies. The discussion should be in-depth and analytical with examples of
how the student has applied the ANA competencies and readings from the texts
and professional literature in the practicum setting. The student is expected to
work on practicum hours every week, upon final approval of the Practicum Goals
and Objectives.
NOTE: In addition to accruing the required number of practicum hours, there
must be a passing grade for the practicum experience which includes progression
with the student’s established goals and objectives, an in-depth documentation of
the practicum experiences as evidenced in the clinical log, and satisfactory
preceptor evaluations. Failure to pass the practicum requirements will result in
failure of the course regardless of the course points as a clinical failure; see
the MSN Handbook for practicum expectations related to performance and
professionalism.
H.
Self-Evaluation
The student will complete a self-evaluation of his/her practicum experiences with
the provided form.

Student Evaluation of Site and Preceptor

The student will complete an evaluation of the site and preceptor for his/her
practicum experience using the form provided. This document must be shared
with the preceptor.
J.
Preceptor Evaluation
The student will give his/her preceptor the provided form to complete an
evaluation of his/her practicum experience. The preceptor will be responsible for
sending a signed and completed form to the instructor in order for the student to
receive credit. The required method of submission from the preceptor to the
instructor is a PDF attachment from the preceptor’s work e-mail to the instructor’s
Liberty University e-mail address.

Late Assignment Policy
If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must
contact the instructor immediately by email.
Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the
instructor will receive the following deductions:

Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will
receive a 10% deduction.
2.
Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20%
deduction.
3.
Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the
class will not be accepted.

Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted.
Special circumstances (e.g. death in the family, personal health issues) will be
reviewed by the instructor on a case-by-case basis.
