ADVANCED CLINICAL APPLICATIONS FOR NURSE EDUCATORS
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides the student advanced health assessment skills within a selected population.
Biopsychosocial, cultural, spiritual, physical, ethical concepts, and systems theory will be
integrated into managing advanced health care needs of the client. Students will apply the
nursing process and focus on improving patient outcomes. The theoretical framework for
simulation design for nursing education, the nursing process, collaborative learning and guided
reflection will be explored to create student-centered educational experiences for attainment of
clinical skills and critical thinking.
RATIONALE
To provide students with the ability to enhance their knowledge and skills in a select area of
clinical specialty and to provide methods of simulation design so that a scenario can be
effectively developed in an educational setting.

NURS 617 Course Syllabus
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
VI.
A.
Assess patients in the clinical setting using critical thinking skills and proper
advanced physical assessment technique.
B.
Apply the nursing process when planning care for patients in the clinical setting.
C.
Demonstrate a Christian worldview when delivering care to patients in the clinical
setting.
D.
Create a simulated interactive patient experience for implementation.
E.
Employ the role of a team member to design, promote and model effective use of
technology and standardized practices that support safety and quality.
F.
Evaluate effective teaching strategies for active learning in the simulated learning
environment.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS
A.
Textbook readings and lecture presentations
B.
Course Requirements Checklist
After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will
complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.
C.
Discussion Board Forums (3)
Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, there will be
3 Discussion Board Forums throughout this course. The student is required to
provide a thread in response to the provided topic for each forum. Each thread is
to be at least 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to
the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each
reply must be at least 250 words.
D.
Practicum Goals and Objectives
The student will write a list of 3 goals and objectives for his/her practicum for this
course. Once final approval is given by the instructor, the student will also submit
a copy of the approved final version of the Goals and Objectives in the Typhon
practicum site as a Microsoft Word attachment and provide a copy to his/her
preceptor prior to the start of practicum hours. The student will be given 5 hours
toward his/her practicum hours for completing the Practicum Goals and
Objectives.
E.
Written Assignments (3)
The student will respond to various topics related to the reading and nurse
educator practicum track. Each written assignment will be completed as a 3–5page paper and must follow current APA format.
F.
Article Analysis (2)
The student will locate an article from a nursing journal that addresses use of
simulation in nursing education. The student will analyze this article and write a
Page 2 of 4
NURS 617 Course Syllabus
2–4-page paper summarizing how this article is beneficial in the development of
the simulation scenario. The paper must follow current APA format.
G.
Simulation Development Plan
The student will select a scenario suitable for undergraduate nursing students or
registered nurses in a healthcare organization and develop a simulation plan. The
student may be creative in the development of this assignment assuming the
simulation equipment is available. The student must include learning outcomes,
the actual design of the scenario, and a plan for evaluation.
H.
Practicum/Clinical Logs (3)
The student will complete 50 clinical hours in a desired specialty with an
approved preceptor. Three goals for this experience will be developed prior to
beginning the clinical practicum experience. Five hours may be applied towards
planning of practicum experience with preceptor, as well as development of goals
and objectives. The student will complete an in-depth practicum log in Typhon
throughout this course. The log is to be comprehensive in the details related to the
experiences in the field. The discussion should be in-depth, analytical with
examples as to how the student has applied the NLN competencies and readings
from the texts and professional literature in the practicum setting.
Note: In addition to accruing the required number of practicum hours, there must
be a passing grade for the practicum experience, which includes progression with
the student’s established goals and objectives, an in-depth documentation of the
practicum experiences as evidenced in the clinical log, and satisfactory preceptor
evaluations. Failure to pass the practicum requirements will result in failure of the
course.
I.
Preceptor Evaluation
The preceptor will complete an evaluation of the student at the end of the
practicum experience. The evaluation will be sent electronically over a secured
server through Typhon to the preceptor. The professor will retain the preceptor
evaluation and may review with the student upon request. Refer to the MSN
Student Handbook for important detailed information.
