ABSTRACT
The 9.2 meter Hobby-Eberly telescope (HET),
operational since 1997 and located on Mt. Fowkles
at the McDonald Observatory, underwent the first
successful tests of the high-resolution spectrograph
(HRS) in February and March of 2001. The HET
was designed for spectroscopic surveys among
which will be the exploration of G-M stars for solarlike activity and extra-solar planet searches with the
HRS. The HRS is fed by a 35 meter long optical
fiber cable and is mounted on a Newport bench,
recording spectra on a 4096 x 4100 CCD mosaic at
resolving powers from 15,000 to 120,000. An R-4
Echelle grating and two cross-dispersing gratings
allow a full 420-1100 nm spectra range.
