Subject Year : S0012 / Introduction to Civil Engineering : 2007 CIVIL ENGINERING CAREER Session 12 Bina Nusantara Challenges for Future There are many challenges future: • • • • Bina Nusantara facing civil engineers in the growing population infrastructure that is deteriorating preparing for the possibility of natural disasters updating of transportation systems to meet growing needs Challenges for Future Civil engineers will have to change their "old" way of thinking to include the many new and emerging areas such as biotechnology, advanced communication and information technology. They will have to partner with industry and collaborate with disciplines outside engineering. They will have to develop innovative and entrepreneurial skills. Bina Nusantara Future Projects Civil engineers are exploring new ways of combining steel and concrete to produce efficient and attractive structures. Arch Bridge Crossing the Brno-Vienna Expressway: January 2000 issue of the New Civil Engineer International Bina Nusantara Future Projects The highway must exit a tunnel in one hillside, cross more the 500m across a 150m deep valley and enter another tunnel on the opposite side. This is an artist's picture of the proposed bridge in Greece's Pindos mountains. Bina Nusantara Future Projects Innovative Falkirk Wheel - 35m high rotating boat lift. It is designed to connect the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals. The wheel will be able to carry up to eight boats at a time and take about 15 minutes per lift. Bina Nusantara Future Projects Ribble Way bridge will link three footpaths. It will be made of concrete filled glass reinforced plastic and is designed to withstand floating debris that may be in the rivers when flooding occurs Bina Nusantara Future Projects This is an artist's idea of what buildings may look like in the future. Civil engineers are going to be needed to build unusual structures like these. (This building has been built and is part of the London, England skyscaper ) Bina Nusantara Careers The diversity within civil engineering creates a wide choice of careers for its graduates. 1. Advance Education ( Masters and PhD degrees ) research and teaching. 2. Civil graduates work at all levels of the economy. Some work in small consulting firms, including those specializing in structural, environmental, municipal and geotechnical engineering, and some work in larger firms which encompass several branches of civil engineering. They have worked for the federal, provincial and municipal levels of government in their transportation divisions or have started their own businesses. 3. Graduates of civil engineering can work all over the world, either as consultants with their own companies or as employees of large international companies, or as volunteers in developing countries, Bina Nusantara Opportunities IN THE FIELD • Civil engineers in the field should possess people-oriented personalities. Their work revolves around the work of others, usually sub-contractors. The engineer must oversee the arrival of materials, the construction of the project, and the completion of the project in a timely, ethical manner. Unlike government employment, working for a firm does offer one added benefit. Bina Nusantara Opportunities DESIGN • Design requires an understanding of computer knowledge as well as general engineering skill. Tools such as AutoCAD and FORTRAN allow the modern engineer to work much more efficiently than engineers of the past. Design electives and student organization projects are good stepping stones to large-scale projects in the workplace. Safety, cost, and quality are the three goals set for every project-the design engineer cannot sacrifice one for the other two. Bina Nusantara Opportunities CONSULTING • Today's Civil Engineering consultants are specialized. The growing demand for high accuracy in the design and construction of a project requires students to spend more time in different design electives than in the field. Students wishing to pursue consulting should aim for at least a masters degree in their sub-discipline as credibility is often the indication of success. New consultants typically begin work in a consulting department before they begin leading others. The annual income of a civil engineering consultant, however, is usually high. Bina Nusantara Opportunities CORPORATE RESEARCH • Corporate research is rare in the Civil Engineering field. Most work takes place at the university level. Large corporations (e.g. oil companies) employ research engineers to examine efficiency of existing structures and systems Bina Nusantara Opportunities GOVERNMENT EMPLOYMENT • The stability of a government job provides job security at a price-mainly wages. While the average salary of a government employee is lower than an engineer in the private sector, the benefits provided level the playing field. Benefits include: predictable advancement, retirement plans, health care, and a structured environment to work in. Bina Nusantara Profession CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT • Project Manager Oversees the entire construction project, organizes sub-contractors to meet the critical path. • Estimator Formulates the expense of a project, prepares the bid proposal, uses quality control to reduce costs to the company to achieve the lowest bid on a project. • Scheduler Designs the critical path of project without sacrificing quality or safety, works closely with the Project Manager. • Project Engineer Designs the project to meet the specifications set by the owner and government regulations, renders pragmatic solutions to daily problems during construction. Bina Nusantara Profession PUBLIC WORKS ENGINEERING • City Engineer - Specializes in Civil Engineering sub-discipline to meet city needs such as water quality, transportation, etc. In Government Department • PU Bina Marga • Jasa Marga • Kimraswil ( pemukiman sarana dan wilayah ) • etc Bina Nusantara Profession GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING • Foundation Designer Designs deep or shallow foundations to support load-bearing structures, examines soil and rock to determine the stability available for a project. • Landfill Manager Creates waste management facilities that meet the needs of a community, employs safe-management practices to avoid contamination of existing soils and water hydropatterns. • Engineering Geologist Determines existing types of soil and rock, tests strengths of the ground to support loads, investigates landslides and other soil/rock related natural disasters. • Geosynthetics Engineer Design geotechnical engineering structure by using Geosynthetics material Bina Nusantara Profession ENGINEERING RESEARCH • Government Researcher Works with the Government Departments, LIPI , BPPT • Corporate Researcher Studies pipelines, offshore structures, efficient construction techniques for firms. • Educational Researcher Focuses on better wearing asphalt, stronger concrete, or engineering software at the university level. Also concerned with publication of current technologies and state-of-the-art advancements. Bina Nusantara Profession STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING • Designer Specializes (in larger firms) in areas such as bridges, offshore structures, buildings, transmission towers, etc., formulates plans that meet criteria based on quality, cost, and safety. • Evaluator/Analyst Explores safety concerns on an existing structures, modifies structures to raise safety levels or to expand existing capabilities. Bina Nusantara Profession WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING • Hydraulic Engineer/Hydrologist Analyzes rain fall data, characteristics of flow in open channels and pipes, designs, reservoirs, studies pollution migration and coastal and shore line protection. • Sanitary Engineer Plans and designs municipal water facilities such as water treatment plants and sewage treatment plants. Also may operate and maintain these facilities. • Water Related Structural Engineer Design such project as: hydroelectric plants, canals, docks and piers. Bina Nusantara Profession TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING • Planner Work in with Government department, firm • Consultant Makes recommendations concerning the infrastructure, deals with transit related problems. • Operations Manager Oversees traffic flows, alters roadway systems to meet the cyclic flow of traffic patterns. • Intelligent Transportation Systems Improves transportation systems through quality control and implementation of efficiency measures (e.g. incident detection devices and High Occupancy Vehicle lanes), works closely with emergency services. • Highway Geometric Design Designs roadway systems.
