It offers musically talented individuals the opportunity to form an encouraging community reflective of the diverse interests and ethnicities within the college community. The choir’s mission is to proclaim the hope and word of God in song, uniting believers in this common purpose. In fulfilling this mission, the choir represents Calvin College and its varied worship styles. The repertoire consists of spirituals, African music, anthems, contemporary, jazz, and African-American gospel music. The Calvin College Gospel Choir also provides a forum in which gospel singers and musicians are able to transcend cultural differences. Along with American English, the choir sings in Spanish, Korean, and African languages. This choral ensemble draws from diverse academic programs and musical skills and is open to all students, staff, faculty, and alumni of Calvin College. Calvin Gospel Choir is a vehicle for ministry that educates and supports diversity outreach and minority recruiting efforts. It adheres to the For Every Nation (FEN) document advanced by the dean of multicultural affairs and the multicultural academic committee at Calvin College. Embracing the rich culture of the AfricanAmerican heritage through a variety of genres and styles, the success of the choir’s mission continues. The Conductor Charsie Randolph Sawyer is a very versatile, exciting, and gifted soprano with many performances to her credit with orchestra, oratorio, opera, and in recital throughout the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom. She toured with the North Carolina Opera Company and appeared with the San Francisco Opera (as part of the Merola Program), the Michigan Opera Theater, Opera Grand Rapids, and a host of other regional organizations. Professor Sawyer is not only a professional soloist but has utilized her God-given musical talents in many other ways, which include church organist, minister of music, worship leader, worship and arts director, and clinician. Professor Sawyer is active in the ongoing research of the music of African-American composers. She has a special interest in the music of women composers from within this group. She was awarded a McGregor Fellowship Grant to continue work on a book she is compiling of African-American women classical composers.
