CGU Writing Center
The Writing Center, in Harper Hall 14, offers prompt, individual consulting sessions to any
CGU student who would like assistance with writing projects (papers, dissertations, articles,
proposals, applications, etc.). Students receive eight free sessions each semester. The
instructors are trained, qualified CGU students with teaching and/or tutoring experience and
can be reached at 909.607.2635.
Course Syllabus
Course Description
This graduate-level course will dive into an HR professional’s role in helping an organization
identify its talent strategy, talent needs and potential gaps resulting in the need for training and
development solutions. Training and employee career development are key competencies an
HR professional/consultant must possess in order to provide strategic support to the
organization. Specific focus areas for this course will be on understanding the organization
strategy, conducting a needs analysis for training, instructional design principles and
considerations (including internal vs. outsourced materials), current trends in training &
development, identifying the ROI on training interventions, and linking training programs to
overall employee career development.
Course Objectives
As an outcome of attending this course, students will be able to:
 Describe the key stakeholders (including the role of HR) in employee training &
development.
 Identify an organization’s underlying talent needs/gaps by conducting a needs analysis.
 Understand key learning theories & competency models and how they relate to
employee training programs.
 Apply basic instructional design and facilitation principles.
 Identify key metrics to evaluate training effectiveness and demonstrate ROI.
 Describe current trends in employee training & development (i.e., micro-learning, elearning, social learning).
Attendance and Timely Arrival to Class
You are expected to be in attendance and on time for each and every class session. Class begins
promptly at the scheduled time. You will be considered tardy any time you arrive after that
assigned time. Please be aware that because this is a 2-module course, attendance and
participation in every class is critically important. Missing two (2) classes will result in a
mandatory withdrawal or failing grade. Timely arrival and class attendance impacts your
classmates, your personal quality of learning, and your final grade. Students are required to
notify the professor of any possible absence or tardiness prior to the day it occurs, except in
emergency situations.
Use of Canvas
This course incorporates Canvas online support for students. Course documents will be posted
online for students and students will be expected to submit all assignments via Canvas for
grading. It is the student’s responsibility to be familiar with Canvas and to ensure assignments
are submitted online prior to the start of the class it is due. All assignments must be in Word or
PDF format.
Course Expectations
Grading
There are a total of 200 points in this course. Your grade will be determined by your class
participation and the successful completion of the following assignment areas:
 Individual assignment (20%, 40 points)
 Team assignment (40%, 80 points)
 Quiz (30%, 60 points)
 Weekly class participation (10%, 20 points)
Your course grade will be based on earned points. There are a total of 200 possible points to be
earned. The points will breakdown as follows:
A: 200-180 points
B: 179-160 points
C: 159-140 points
D: 139-120 points
F: 119-100 points
Assignment Instructions
Individual Assignments (20%, 40 points)
 Students will find and research scholarly article on training effectiveness (i.e., ROI of
training, training outcomes). After identifying a suitable article students are expected to
summarize the main points of the article, highlight their own key learning, and apply the
findings to a practical example.
Team Assignment (40%, 80 points)
 Students will divide into teams and have design a small training intervention. With this
exercise, students will have the change opportunity practice and apply basic
instructional design methodology.
Quiz (30%, 60 points)
 There will be a quiz on the main course material covered in class and in the textbook
readings. Focus areas of the quiz will be on the following topics: organizational context
& strategy, training needs assessment & SWOT analysis, the ADDIE model, evaluating
training including ROI analyses, linkage to employee career development.
Weekly class participation (10%, 20 points)
 Students are expected to be prepared for each class, have read the assigned reading,
participate in class discussions and exercises as well as turn off all electronic devices.
