NEWS&ANALYSIS the buzz PCS Gateway upgrades Profile desktop GATEWAY HAS UPGRADED ITS ALL- in-one desktop computer with Intel’s latest chip set, as well as integrated graphics technology. The $1,400 Profile 5.5 features a high-bandwidth Serial ATA hard drive and as much as 2GB of memory. The company targets the PC at businesses, government offices and schools with little available desktop space. As with previous models, the Profile 5.5 offers 15-, 17- and 19-inch screens. The Profile 5.5 comes with the 915G chip set, a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 processor and a 1MB cache. It can be ordered with a Celeron D chip, said Gateway officials. Also offered with the all-inone are integrated Ethernet support, optional 802.11g wireless capabilities and Client Manager 8.1 management software. WI-FI Colubris adds QOS for WLANs COLUBRIS NETWORKS THIS WEEK will introduce a suite of qualityof-service software for its line of WLAN access devices and controllers. Building on the recently ratified IEEE 802.11e standard, the Service Aware Wi-Fi QOS software prioritizes network traffic based on its function—data transfers, voice over IP or video surveillance. The company also is upgrading its network management software. The software is available to Colubris customers as a free upgrade. —Carmen Nobel PRINTERS Lexmark spruces up color lasers LEXMARK INTERNATIONAL THIS WEEK is shipping new color laser printers with faster speeds, enhanced media-handling capabilities and cost-saving features. The C762, targeted at midsize and large enterprises, prints 25 pages per minute in color and in monochrome. It will replace Lexmark’s older model, the C752. The C762, priced at $1,799, is cheaper than the older model, which is priced at $1,869. The cost per page is about 1.1 cents for monochrome and 8.3 cents for color, said Lexmark officials. Powered by a 500MHz processor, the C762 has 128MB of memory and includes USB 2.0 and parallel interfaces. A networked model with 100MB more of memory, the C762n, costs $2,099, and a networked model with a duplexer, the C762dn, costs $2,299, or $2,799 with a 500-sheet paper drawer. Lexmark this week is also shipping a multifunction color laser printer. The network-ready X762e comes with two 500sheet paper trays and a duplexer for two-sided printing. It is priced at $7,499. —Shelley Solheim INTERNET Ask Jeeves adds personalization ASK JEEVES IS GETTING PERSONAL with Web searches and trying to leapfrog past bigger competitors in the process. The company last week launched a series of personalization features for its search engine that let users store individual search results, organize them and share them through a new MyJeeves service. Ask Jeeves’ personal push follows the launch last week of Amazon.com’s A9.com search engine, which focuses on customization.
