Discussing the illustration:
1. This drawing shows priest in the 1500s raising money for the Roman Catholic Church. They
are doing this by selling special pardons that allowed Christians to avoid some punishment
for their sins. What word is usually used for these special pardons?
2. Luther believed that only a true faith in Christ could win God’s salvation. What did he
mean by the phrases, “faith in Christ” and “God’s Salvation”?
3. Luther uses the words “Justification by faith alone” for his idea that faith is the only way to
win salvation. This idea about faith made him very angry about the indulgences that the
church was selling. Can you explain why this would be so?
