Ihopefacultycanreallyreadstudents'papersandgivehelpfulfeedbacktohelpuslearn academicwriting,ratherthanbeingjudgmental.Inaddition,Ihopethereareclearer instructionsonhowtopreparequalificationexams,thespecificationonPh.D.student's manualshouldbemorespecific. 2. Itwouldbenicetoseeanout-of-classmeeting(oraseriesofthem)onprofessionalization issuesinhistory.Forexample,therigorofthePhD,honestdiscussionofjobprospects, alternativecareerchoicesamonghistorians(theCareerCenter'sversionofthisishelpful,but lessspecific),etc. 3. Professorshavelimitedtimewithstudentsduringthetimeotherthanclass(es).Itmakesit difficulttogetworksdoneasstudentsneedmoreguidesfromtheprofessors.Especially,the graduateworksaresomewhatdifficultasthelevelFacultyhaslimitedofficehours,so,ifany worksthatneededtobeaskedforhelpfacetoface,it'stoughbecausethenexttimetosee thefacultyisnextweek. IreceivedmostsuggestionsfromPFF/Shamini,notreallyfrommydepartment. Thefacultyismorefocusedonresearch. MoreCFP,morepublishingopportunities,andmoreTAshipandRAship FacultyshouldmakerecommendationsforstudentsduringadvisingearlyinthePhDprogram toattendprofessionaldevelopmentworkshops,attendconferences,getpublished,etc. Manyofthesethingsareeasiertodopriortoenteringthequalsanddissertationphaseof PhD Exaltsthataremoredesignedformyparticularareaandfocus. Itwouldbebetterfortheprofessorstoprovideresearchopportunitiesformorestudents withfunding providingteachingexperience,alsoworkingtostrengthenlinkstocommunityandstate institutionsinthearea,withtheideaofincreasingjobopportunities. IwouldliketoseethedepartmenthaveamorestreamlinedwayforCFPsandother professionalizationopportunityinformationtobedisseminated. Idon'texpectthisreally,butit'salwaysnicetohave. Facultymembershavefavoritestudents,whichisnosurprise.Whileitishumannature,itis blatantlyseeninandoutofclasses.ProfessorspickTA'sandindependentstudystudents basedonfavorites,andinclasstheprofessorswillpicktheirfavoritestoanswerthequestions firstorcontributetothediscussionfirst.Evenpassingstudentsoncampus,professorswill pickandchoosewhotheystopandtalkto,ormaketimefortheirfavoritestudentsmorethan others.Theworstpartismanyprofessorsdon'tpretendtheytreateveryoneequallyandthey thinktheiractionsarejustified. ITAedforseveralclasses.Connectingmewithadjunctpositions,ifpossible,wouldbehelpful. Notatall.AllteachingexperiencewasgainedoutsideofCGU,unfortunately.Theyare,however, greataboutsendingoutannouncementsforlocalteachingopportunities.Andotherthanone facultymemberinEnglishhavingstudentswritetheirownlettersofrecommendation,the facultyhavebeengreataboutgettinglettersoutforme. Theyhavebeenhelpful.However,havingaTAprogramwiththeotherCUCcollegeswouldbea greatstepforward IcametoCGUwithalreadyhavingateachingjob,sofacultyweren'tnecessaryforthe experience.IgetthesensethatifIpursuedthiswiththeCulturalStudiesfacultytheywouldhave beenhelpful. Iwouldn'tsaythey'vebeenhelpful,butIdon'tknowhowtheycouldhelpeither.Perhapsa greaterunderstandingthatmanyofusteachandareteachingtopaythebills. Ifthefull-timefacultycouldofferabitmoretimewithstudents,astherearemanystudentswho arewaitinginlinetoseeprofessors&professorsonlyhasonehourofficehour,thelastperson whoisinthelinetoseethefacultywillhavetowaituntilnextweek. Differentprofessorsdemonstratedifferentteachingstrategiesatgraduatelevel,butnotreally undergraduatelevel.Wemightneedmoresuggestionsorstrategiesfromprofessorswhoare teachingundergraduateschoolsaswell.Moreover,noteveryPhDstudentwillbeabletoteach nicestudentswhoarein5C.Alotofusmightteachatcommunitycollegeorsomeother instituteswherewemightencountermoredifficultiesthatweneverlearnorrealizebefore.It mightnotbeabadideatohaveaworkshoptoshareallteachingexperiencewithoneanother. I,ofmyownvolition,joinedaprivatemusicschoolasteacher,andamtryingtoattendthePFF program. TheyshouldhavedifferentstudentsasTAorRAeachyear. Iwasonlyadvisedtogetteachingexperience.ItwouldhavebeenhelpfultoattendPreparing FutureFacultypriortostartingteachingandjobapplications. Needtoscreenourteachingopportunitiesbetter,theywantedmetoteachanddonateall suppliestostudents.IwasgivenNOsupplies.IhadtostopthisTAbecauseIcouldnotaffordto pay$70insupplieseveryweekfor10weeks.Unreasonableexpectationsforourkindness. Someofthefacultyattempttoprovidesomeadviceonteaching. Seeabove.Theyhavenotbeenhelpfulatall. Facultyinmydepartmenthasnotbeenhelpfulintheprocess.Ifoundjobsonmyownandthe facultydoesn'tseemtoseeteachingexperienceasapriority,especiallyforPhDstudents.I've hadmoreconversationsaboutteachingfromotherPhDstudentsthanIdidwithfaculty members. They'venotbeenhelpful,butIalsohavenotaskedthem. StudentsaretoldtherearenoTAprogramsthatareorganizedorsanctionedbySAHorCGU faculty.Andyet,SAHprofessorshaveTAscomethefirstdayofclass.Itseemsshadyandplaying favorites. InmytimeatCGU(almosttwoyearsbeginning2014)therehavebeenveryfew"core"classeson topicsinEuropeanhistory.GiventhesmallsizeofthedepartmentIamnotsurprised.Thatsaid, itwouldbeniceifathoroughgoing-overofEuropeanhistoryclasseswouldbeconductedsoon toensurethatstudents'intentionsofcomingherecanbemetbythedepartment'sofferings. 3. Idislikedhowmanyofthecoursesinmyprogramwererepeatedfairlyfrequently,andsoasI progressedmoreinmyprogramtheoptionsforclasseskeptdecreasingsinceIhadtakenmany ofthemalready.Therejustdidn'tseemtobeahugevarietyofclassestochoosefrom.I'veseen otherprogramswheretherearealotmorecourseofferings,andtheychangeeverysemesterso thereisalwayssomethingnew. 4. GiventhesizeoftheUniversityandthedepartmentthecourseofferingsareadequateand diverseenoughtosatisfymyinterests. 5. Itseemsthatthecoursesbegantorepeatthemselves(orwereextremelysimilar)after2years. Morevarietywouldbehelpful. 6. iflecturecoursescouldbeduringthemorningtime,it'sbetterformostofthestudents, especiallymusicmajor.Becauseofthelimitedchancetousethepracticeroominthemusic department,it'sgoodtohavealllecturesinthemorning,sothatafterclasses,studentscan eithergotothelibrarytodotheacademicworkorpracticeinthepracticerooms.Especially, musicdepartment'sclassroomisattachedtothepracticerooms,whilethere'slecture,noone couldpractice. 7. Arrangingcourseofferingsisaverydifficultandtoughjob.Iamnotsosurehowcouldwegive suggestionsonthistopic. 8. Thereseemtobenotmanycoursesatall.I'mnotsureifoneofthecoursesneededformeto graduateisbeingoffered. 9. Fortheprogramtobetrulytransdisciplinaryandtranscultural,thesubjectmatterneedsto broadenandnotbeWestern-centric 10. Offermorenightcoursesforthosewhowork! 11.
