He Sapa College Center Annual Report 2013‐2014 Oglala Lakota College Vision: Rebuilding the Lakota Nation Through Education Oglala Lakota College Mission: “The mission which emanates from the charter of the Oglala Sioux Tribe is to educate students for professional and vocational employment opportunities in Lakota Country. learning Lakota ways of life in the community‐by teaching Lakota culture and language as part of preparing students to participate in a multicultural world.” He Sapa College Center Vision: Assist in the rebuilding in the Lakota Nation Through Education He Sapa College Center Mission Statement: The He Sapa College Center will provide educational opportunities that enhance Lakota life by helping to fulfill academic aspirations and dreams of our students. He Sapa will foster community involvement and support of the College center. We will continue to foster Wolakolkiciyapi by incorporating the language and culture throughout the college center and within the community it serves. Staff/ Personnel Data: Shirley Lewis‐ Director‐ Adjunct from 1994‐ and FT Director December 2002 to current Ginna Arguello‐ Assistant to the Director‐ Academic Counselor from August 2004 to 2012. Assistant to the Director from October 2012 to present. Cassie Big Crow‐ Academic Counselor since March 3, 2013 Darelyn Runnels‐ Academic Counselor since November 5, 2012 Jacqueline Alcantar‐ Student Support Services Counselor 2008‐September 2012, Academic Counselor since September 7, 2012 2013‐2014 Budget: $398,572.00 (Two buildings and grounds, 17 classrooms, 2 science labs, a library, multipurpose room, archive room, and a furnace/electrical room, offices) Allied Health is occupying office space in Building 2. Shirley Lewis and Ginna Arguello‐ members of the following committees‐ Retention Committee, Student Services Committee, Foundational Studies Committee, PWO and Strategic Planning Committee. Professional Development Activities: QPR Training, CR 101 Career Planning Workshop, Jenzabar and Early Alerts. 1 Professional Development Needs: Better Communication between Registrar and Financial Aid and other Departments. Trainings on Jenzabar and Early Alerts that are now done online. Common Customer Service Complaints: Noise level in hallways‐ We addressed this by closing classroom doors when classes are in session and gently reminding students that the noise is a problem. Length of time students are waiting to see their Academic Counselors‐ we addressed this by creating a form that the student can fill out (voluntarily) with their requests and the counselors will get back to them as soon as possible. Encouraging the use of email to contact their counselors, if they are unable to wait and visit with them. Better attitude and professionalism by the staff at the front desk‐ we train the front staff on how to properly answer the phones and encourage professionalism and friendly service to all persons that they have direct contact with at the front desk. Most Significant Accomplishments: Number of Graduates each year and former graduates who have gained employment in the community. Active Student Organization. Significant Challenges: Student participation in college activities, Ex: Student Organization Activities, Workshops sponsored by staff. – We will continue to encourage students to participate in college activities and provide them with early notification as to when activities will be. We will continue to schedule activities at times that will foster participation. Critical Needs: We would like to have more trainings on the changes and updates to the Jenzabar System and Reference Web as well as Customer Service Training. Workshops: We addressed the needs of persistence, retention and graduation by offering workshops in Remedial Course Refresher Workshops, New Student Orientation, Scholarship and Financial Aid workshops, Cultural Workshops‐ Tipi Raising, Research and Writing Workshops, He Sapa Writers Group, Mini Job Fairs, Attending post high nights for student recruitment at Central and Stevens High Schools, CR 101 Career Planning Training, College Readiness prep sessions, We offered tutoring to facilitate persistence, retention and completion rates of students Educational goals. We made phone calls, sent out emails and mailings to students and had face to face meetings with students, to make sure their academic needs are being met. We informed the students when pre‐ registration begins and assist them if needed. December 2013‐ 2,177 (Fall 2013). Number of student contacts from counselor’s daily logs for the months of January 2014‐May 2014‐ 2,389 (Spring 2014). He Sapa College and Community Activities‐ Fall 2013: August 12‐August 16, 2013‐ Registration Week August 15 and August 16, 2013‐ OLC Bookstore here at the HSCC‐ Approximately 160 students picked up their books at this time and signed up for laptops. August 19th and August 20th 2013‐ Oglala Lakota College Remedial Course Refresher Workshops‐ Held by Foundational Studies Department had 8 participants. August 20, 2013‐ Course Cancellation meeting at Piya Wiconi August 21, 2013‐ New and Returning students were encouraged to attend orientation. A power point presentation was given and the OLC handbook was gone over with students, as well as other important key points. MJ Farrington (College Campus Coalition) was a guest speaker and the HSCC Student Organization President also spoke to the students. Breakfast and 3 lunch were provided and door prizes were given out. 45 students participated in the orientation and a survey was completed by each of them as well. See attached results. (Student Orientation Survey Fall 2013). August 29, 2013‐ First HSCC Student Organization meeting was held and Officers were nominated and a vote of the student body will be held. September 3, 2013 and September 5, 2013‐ American Indian College Fund/ TCU Scholarship Workshops were held in the computer lab for new and returning students. Assistance was provided and questions were answered by Academic Counselors. 25 participants September 6, 2013‐ Welcome Back Dance Quake was held at Main Street Square‐ several different dance groups/dance styles were performed at this event, there was a DJ, door prizes and snacks available, which was sponsored by College Campus Wellness Coalition and OLC Campus Suicide Prevention Program (Rochelle Middleton). 200 participants, which included college students and community members. September 10, 2013‐ Welcome Back lunch for students sponsored by HSCC Student Organization‐ Chicken, salads, fruit, drinks and desserts were served.‐ 150 participants September 17, 2013‐ Lakota Culture Tipi Raising‐ 45 participants September 20, 2013‐Counselors spearheaded a Research and Writing Workshop, which was held in the computer lab, one session from 10‐12 and another from 1‐3, a lunch was provided. 13 participants. A survey was completed after the workshop by each participant. (see attached results of survey). September 23, 2013‐ Book signing by Linda Hogan‐ 15 participants September 3, 2013 and October 3, 2013‐ Oglala Sioux Tribe‐ Higher Education was here to assist students with higher Education grants for next academic year. 15 participants September 26, 2013‐ Attended a State and Tribal Relations Committee meeting at Best Western Ramkota in RC. OLC was scheduled to present to the committee at 9:12 a.m. Presenters were Senator Tiezen, Adelstein and Bradford and Representatives Killer, Heinert, Vercho, Qualm and May. Other speakers included UTTC, RC Director of Indian Education‐ Jr. Bettelyoun, Greg Sattizahn from the US Judicial Systems on changes in the laws this year, Steve Allender, Chief of Police and officers on Race Relations in RC, SDHDA and LOWO. Shirley Lewis represented OLC. There was also public comment sessions held at the end of each presentation. October 2, 2013‐Ginna and Shirley attended the Rapid City American Indian Initiatives Meeting, which was held at Western Dakota Tech. We sat through presentations regarding the happenings/events at the different colleges/universities and High Schools. It was suggested that everyone contribute to the event calendar, so everyone remains informed about upcoming events. Melanie Garstenshlager from WDT said she would start the calendar and also update 4 the mailing list. The next meeting will be held in the Spring and will be hosted by the RCAS Indian Education Office. October 9, 2013‐ Addiction Recovery Meetings‐open to students and the community will be held each Wednesday throughout the year from 6‐8 p.m. Participants vary from 10 to 15 each week. October 11, 2013‐ Consumer/Coupon Credit Workshop‐ OLC‐HSCC hosted a workshop for students. The workshop consisted of a speaker, Terry Mills who presented information on Consumer Credit and Judith Graham ( OLC Instructor) who presented information on couponing. There was only one student who participated, however the workshop proceeded as scheduled. October 18th‐ October 25th‐ 191 students completed a survey on the Financial Aid Office. October 16, 2013 and October 23, 2013‐ Sioux San Health and Education provided flu shots to our students and the community. Anyone who is registered at HIS was eligible to receive a flu shot. There were 2 nursing staff giving the flu shots. 90 participants (students and community members). October 22, 2013‐ Central High School Post High Night‐ Shirley Lewis, Kahomy Souksavath (HSCC Student ) and Danielle Griffith (HSCC Student) set up a booth and spoke with high school students and their parents about Oglala Lakota College. 15 participants October 25, 2013‐ Student Appreciation Banquet. The event began by raising of the Tipi through volunteering of Lakota Culture instructor ( Corey Yellow Boy), students and community members at 7:30 a.m. Student volunteers joined throughout the event to assist with meal preparation, set up, serving and clean up. Motivational/ Cultural Speakers spoke at this event. The He Sapa drum group was also present with an honoring song for our students and veterans. The menu consisted of Chicken Noodle and Buffalo Vegetable soups, chicken, salads, fruit, drinks and cakes. This event encouraged a positive social gathering for all those who participated. Those knowledgeable Lakota Culture instructors and students passed on their skills to those in attendance at this event. Skills such as raising and retrieving the Tipi , song, drum and storytelling. The event brought everyone together in a different setting, other than the usual classroom setting. The event created a Tiospaye of students, families, employees, faculty/adjuncts through support towards those enrolled students of Oglala Lakota College. We extend a heartfelt Thank you to the Student Services Coordinator’s office for its generosity and contribution to this event. 102 participants October 25, 2013‐ He Sapa Volunteer Veterans Group (Shawn Waggoner with student support) sponsored a clothing giveaway for HSCC students and the community. Staff and students donated clothing as well as community members. 74 participants signed in and received clothing. 5 October 28, 2013‐ He Sapa Writers Group‐ meets at the center once a month from 11‐12:30 for the next 9 months. Students and community members are welcome to attend these meetings. Participants vary monthly from 2‐10. Chairperson is former graduate and author, Valerie Janis. November 14, 2013‐ HSCC Student Organization sponsored a Thanksgiving Dinner for students/staff. 155 participants November 15, 16 and 17, 2013‐ Lakota Language Summit held at the Ramkota‐ Student Organization sponsored/paid fees for 2 students to attend. November 15, 2013‐ Faculty Retreat at Piya Wiconi‐ power point presentation given by Shirley. November 15, 2013‐ Free Skate Night at Ice Skate arena for students and their families‐ 20 participants. November 20, 2013‐ OLC Nursing students had a fundraiser and sold chili and frybread‐ 30 participants November 20, 2013‐ IHS/ Sioux San Diabetic Screening Team was here for staff/students and community members for blood sugar testing and education on diabetes. 25 participants November 20, 2013‐ Mini Job Fair was held‐ BH National Forest, Wind Cave National Park and the National Guard were here, along with the Campuses Community Coalition Display. Because it was held in the student lounge there was no sign up sheet. A number of students, estimated at about 15 stopped and visited with the representatives from these organizations. November 30, 2013‐ HSCC had a float in the parade of lights downtown. Two Business students (Kahomy Souksavath and Danielle Griffith and the Student Organization advisor Ginna Arguello) decorated the float. Staff & faculty children and students rode on the float. Hundreds of people lined downtown RC to watch the parade of lights. December 5, 2013‐ Stevens High School College Night‐ HSCC set up a booth and spoke with students and their parents about OLC and Early Entry. Students, Danielle Griffith and Kelsy Jurrens assisted Shirley at the booth. A storm hampered participation. 6 participants December 10, 2013‐ Healthy Eating Workshop/Community‐ sponsored by Sioux San IHS, Nutritionist Kibbe Conti was held for students and the community at the He Sapa College Center. Kibbe made soup and demonstrated healthy eating ideas, offering vegetables and fruit. 20 participants Spring 2014: January 8, 2014‐ He Sapa Elderly Group Meeting was held at Mother Butler Center‐ Shirley Lewis attended this meeting and spoke about OLC and the courtesy services available to the community, such as notary public, copies and faxes. They asked for OLC calendars, so Shirley 6 will bring some to the next scheduled meeting to give to them. The meeting consists of our Native elders in the community. (community involvement). 15 participants January 8, 2014‐ SD National Guard set up an informational booth in the student lounge and spoke with students/community members. 13 participants January 9, 2014‐ IHS/ Sioux San Diabetic program was here today for staff, students and community for blood sugar testing and education. 15 participants January 15, 2014‐ New Student Orientation‐ All returning and new students were encouraged to attend orientation. Counselors were available to assist students with questions or concerns on the scholarship websites. 6 participants February 1, 2014‐ Praxis II Prep Sessions‐ held by OLC Education Department to assist students with studying for the Praxis test. 5 participants February 5, 2014‐ HSCC Student Organization sponsored a welcome back dinner for students and staff and an honoring for the HSCC Counselors‐ 110 participants February 5, 2014‐ AICF Scholarship Workshop was held in the computer lab from 9‐3. Counselors were available to assist students with questions or concerns on scholarship website. 4 participants February 12, 2014‐ HSCC Student Organization sponsored a free lunch for students in the student lounge. 75 participants February 12, 2014‐ Impaired Driving Demonstration‐ Sponsored by the College Campus Wellness Coalition. 25 participants February 21, 2014‐ Free skate night for HSCC students and their families was scheduled at the Roosevelt Ice Skating arena from 9‐11 p.m. This event was sponsored by the College Campus Wellness Coalition/ MJ Farrington 40 participants February 27, 2014‐ AICF Scholarship workshop was held in the computer lab from 9‐3. Counselors were available to assist students with any questions or concerns on the scholarships. 21 participants March 5, 2014‐ Shirley Lewis participated in the annual job fair that was held at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center‐ booth was set up and information was given out to potential students. 43 participants 7 OST Higher Education was here today from 1‐5 p.m. to assist students with filling out the higher education applications for next semester. 14 students applied for higher education grant. April 2, 2014‐ Piya Wiconi‐ Business Office gave the students the option of having their scholarships, pell, higher education checks directly deposited into their bank accounts. Approximately 40 students utilized this service. April 2, 2014‐ RC Central High School Sophomore Experience was held at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center‐ Shirley attended this event and set up a booth providing information and handouts. OLC water bottles, bags and sun glasses were given out to the high school students who stopped by the booth. 40 participants April 8, 2014‐ AICF Representative Stevie Lee was here from 12‐8 to speak with students about scholarships (recruitment) that will be available to them for next year. 25 participants April 9, 2014‐ SW Methods class did an Indian Taco fundraiser $5.00 for taco and soda, to benefit the Hope Center in RC. 120 Indian Tacos were sold that day to students & community. April 16, 2014‐ SW Methods class did a 2nd Indian Taco fundraiser $5.00 for Indian Taco and soda to benefit the Hope Center in RC. 110 Indian Tacos were sold that day to students & community. April 23, 2014‐ SW Methods class did a 3rd Indian Taco fundraiser $5.00 for Indian Taco and soda to benefit The Hope Center in RC. 115 Indian Tacos were sold that day to students & community. April 17, 2014‐ HSCC Student Organization sponsored an Easter dinner for the students. It was held at the center at noon. Students put their names in a drawing for 20 Easter baskets that were given out as door prizes. 101 participants April 21, 2014‐ Pre‐ Registration began today for the Summer 2014 and Fall 2014 academic semesters. April 21, 2014‐ Shirley and Ginna were invited to a reception held by SDSM&T for one of our former students, Vaughn Vargas who was awarded a scholarship from the Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Foundation. He is being named a National Science Foundation Tiyospaye Scholar. April 24, 2014‐ CR 101 Training, Consortium ACT Key Training with SD Allied Health. Counselors from our centers were invited to He Sapa to participate in the introduction of the National Careers Readiness Program. One of our counselors participated in this training. April 25, 2014 and May 2, 2014‐ Counselors conducted workshops on both days for AICF, FAFSA and obtaining IRS Tax Transcripts from the IRS. Snacks and Lunch were provided. 13 participants 8 April 26, 2014‐ College Readiness Prep Sessions were held at He Sapa. 5 participants May 2, 2014‐ Proficiency Profile Test Workshop‐ Only Spring 2014 graduates need to take this test. 5 participants May 6, 2014 and May 7, 2014‐ Oglala Sioux Tribe Health Administration Choices Program ( choosing healthy ways of life for women) ( Helping babies from being hurt by alcohol during pregnancy.) set up for two days in the student lounge, to talk with students, staff and community about the program. 12 participants per program reporting May 15, 2014‐ QPR Training (Question, Persuade, Refer) took place at the He Sapa College Center. This training was open to the community. 15 participants May 27, 2014‐ Summer classes began today. We are only having 2 course this summer, which are Math 103 Elementary Algebra‐ 12 students and LSoc 103 Lakota Culture‐ 8 students. June 2, 2014‐ HSCC Student Organization hosted a graduation dinner for all He Sapa graduates. Graduation gifts were presented to the graduates during the celebration. 80 participants June 9, 2014‐ Summer Cultural Tipi presentation‐ Prayer, presentation and instruction by Corey Yellow Boy‐ OLC Instructor and his summer Lakota Culture class. Wheaton College (Illinois) faculty and 6 students participated in this event. Snacks and drinks were provided by the Directors office. 25 participants June 21, 2014 to August 1, 2014 a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) program offered by Allied Health will be held in RC. 16 students have signed up for this program A binder containing, surveys, flyers, sign‐in sheets and photographs is available for review and located at He Sapa College Center.
