Pine Ridge College Center Annual Report 2012‐2013 Center Staff Shirley Brewer, Center Director Bessie Le Beau, Assistant Director/Student Organization Advisor Loretta Red Feather, Counselor Chrysan Smallwood, Counselor Thalia Wilson, Student Support Services Counselor Cassie Big Crow, GED Tutor Local Board Members Dennis Brewer, President Barbara Swan, Vice‐President Dorothy Tyon, Secretary William White Eyes, Member Student Organization Ezra Zephier, President Jacob Herman, Vice‐president Fletcher Cox, Secretary Kashmir Bettelyoun, Treasurer Izaiah Slow Bear, Sergeant at Arms Rebecca Lone Elk, Student Senate Pricilla Cummings, PWO representative The student body at Pine Ridge College Center primarily consists of students living within Pine Ridge Village. There are a few students from smaller districts who chose PRCC as their home center because their classes are more likely to be offered here. Approximately 35% of our students are employed full time and 63% have families. The number of entering freshmen each semester varies, some semesters we will get 60 new students, others only twenty. The majority of our students are in their mid‐twenties to the late thirties. Generally most students know what they want to major in when they first register, but others require a little more advising. These students benefit the most from the student orientation offered each semester. Center Goals Increase new student attendance at Orientation each semester. Increase student advising through increased student contact via scheduling sessions with counselors. Providing student information utilizing social media. Build and promote more student involvement in PRCC Student Organization. 1 PRCC Enrollment Fall 2012 Spring 2013 312 students registered 288 students registered Full time 192 Full time 168 Part time 120 Part time 120 FTE 263.16 248.08 Entering Freshmen 41 Entering Freshmen 20 Returning students 271 Returning students 268 Students graduating in June 2013 Bachelors Degree 6 Associate Degree 13 Certificate 1 Gas Vouchers Pine Ridge College Center distributed a total of $16,399 for the 2012‐2013 academic year for gas vouchers. The total amount spent for fall was $9120 and $7279 for the Spring. For the fall semester there were 53 PRCC students traveling to the other nine centers for class and 39 during the spring semester. Students traveled to the following districts. Fall 2012 Spring 2013 EWCC three students EWCC two students ENCC one student ENCC none HSCC six students HSCC nine students LCCC four students LCCC seven students OCC eight students OCC 2 students PHCC twenty four students PHCC eleven students PSCC fifteen students PSCC eleven students PW thirteen students PW nine students WKCC four students WKCC five students Course offerings During the fall there were initially 86 courses offered, 20 of the courses were closed due to lack of enrollment. There were 87 courses offered for the spring semester, 13 were closed due to lack of enrollment. The majority of these students were then able to add the class at a different and received gas vouchers to travel. Twenty six (32%) of fall course offerings were core courses, eight (10%) were Lakota Studies courses, 6 (8%) were Foundational Studies courses and 46 (50%) were required major courses. Twenty nine (33.3%) of spring course offerings were core, 14 (16.1%) were Lakota Studies courses, 6.9 (8%) were Foundational Studies and 38 (43.7%). One problem with scheduling is that we never know when a student is not going to return, and thus count them in our course needs, then the course closes because of non‐returning students. Scheduling here at PRCC is a lot more efficient since we adopted the use of the eight semester plan. 2 Counseling contacts Each student registering at PRCC has at least one counseling session at the time of registration. The majority of them do have follow up sessions at the time of financial aid disbursements. But there are some students who do fall through the cracks, therefor we are implementing a system where students are required to have at least one additional advising/counseling session with their counselor or the center director. When we are unable to contact a student we document the time and method in each student file. Identified student needs Child Care Housing Study skills Transportation Time management skills Employment Tutoring Approximately fifty‐five students were tutored this academic year. The majority of tutoring was on an individual basis. Subjects tutored were primarily math and science with a few students needing English or Lakota tutors. The majority of tutors were provided by the Student Support Services program with just a few being from OLC tutoring. Community activities PRCC held many events at the center and in the community including; Welcome back dinner (fall) Thanksgiving dinner Make & Take workshop Welcome back dinner (spring) Float in Oglala Nation Parade Annual Awards Dinner Lakota Fund: Financial Literacy, Credit Where Credit is Due ,Business Planning, OSHA training, Home Buyer Education, and free income tax preparation. Job Corp: Representatives visited monthly from August through January to assist community members with the application process. OST Health & Human Services conducted a study of students on students who had quit smoking. Pine Ridge High School administered the ACT test for their high school seniors. We had a very successful year. Our students are taking for personal responsibility for their education and are living up to our expectations while increasing their self‐ expectations. We observe students who are much more aware of their plan of education and are more committed to putting forth their best effort. 3 4
