HSB4U--Web Quest and Presentation—Local Poverty You and TWO partners will put together a presentation on the issue of local poverty; specifically you will investigate the challenge of poverty in Brampton. 1. Begin your search on the Statistics Canada website: http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/ -Find the latest census. -Once there find Community Profiles. -Put in the name of your community i.e. Brampton. -A table will come up with detailed information. -Make a note of the population trends i.e. age, gender, households, immigrants, earnings, income, ethnicities… ****Choose 5 factors that you think have a direct impact on poverty in your community. 2. Go to Brampton’s official website i.e. City of Brampton - Search the issue of poverty; You should find several relevant documents and/or links i.e. Child poverty -What does the website tell you about poverty here? Who is affected? -What, if any, initiatives are being undertaken to address this issue? i.e. poverty reduction strategies 3. Search local charities i.e. Knights Table, that may provide support to impoverished individuals in your community. -What do they say about poverty in Brampton? -How many people do they care for? Who do they care for? -How do they raise funds? -How do they raise awareness? -How do they help? -Are their initiatives successful? Using the information collected you will: 1. Provide an overview/snapshot of Brampton’s population (Its makeup). Make notes of any interesting trends that you noticed i.e. ethnic composition, education levels, income/earnings… *It might be useful to compare censes. 2. Assess the issue of poverty in Brampton. How does it compare to provincial/federal trends? 3. Discuss some poverty reduction strategies/initiatives undertaken locally and assess their success or failures in addressing the challenge of poverty in Brampton. 4. You will present your findings to the class in a 15 MINUTE presentation. **You will receive both a group mark as well as an individual mark for this assignment. **A missed presentation without official documentation such as doctor’s note will receive a mark of zero.
