NorthWestern Energy Community Works Scholarship for Native American Students in Engineering A special new scholarship opportunity for Native Am erican students! In order to encourage and support Native American students studying Engineering, NorthWestern Energy has established a scholarship program administered by the Montana State University Alumni Foundation. Up to three $2,000 scholarships will be awarded competitively to Native American students who meet the qualifications based on submission of an application, as described below. NorthWestern Energy is an investor-owned utility and one of the largest providers of electricity and natural gas in the northwest quadrant of the United States. NorthWestern Energy serves approximately 339,400 electric customers and 182,100 natural gas customers in the state of Montana. Montana facilities include 7,000 miles of electrical transmission lines, 17,300 miles of electrical distribution lines, 2,000 miles of national gas transmission lines, and 5,000 miles of national gas distribution lines. NorthWestern Energy employs more than 1,000 people in the state of Montana. Scholarship qualifications: • • • • Are enrolled members of a federally recognized Native American Tribe or the Little Shell Chippewa Tribe recognized by the State of Montana Enrolled in a major from MSU’s College of Engineering with at least 12 credits per semester. Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on 4.0 scale Demonstrate strong work ethic and leadership potential as evidenced through their professional and/or personal extracurricular activities. To apply for the NorthWestern Energy Community Works Scholarship, please prepare and submit the following information: ☐ The Community Works Scholarship application form (see attached). ☐ A copy of your MSU transcript (an unofficial transcript is satisfactory). ☐ Proof of tribal affiliation (CIB, enrollment card, status card) ☐ A concise (~3 pages) typed statement of your educational and career goals and interests, and how they relate to engineering. Within your statement, be sure to discuss any special experiences or research activities you have been involved in, as well as any examples of jobs, honors, awards, and areas of leadership in school and in extra-curricular activities. ☐ One letter of recommendation from a professor or staff member who knows you. Do not include the letter of recommendation in your application packet: ask the referee to send the letter directly to the College of Engineering’s Designing Our Community program, 313 Roberts Hall.
