Course Facts: The novel MSc Sustainable Resource
Management: Policy and Practice is a multidisciplinary approach to environmental sustainability devised by National University
Galway Ireland and University of Limerick to respond to the continuing interest among students in an environmental and resource management programme and the market demand for graduates with more applied knowledge of the environmental sector. Strongly research led, this programme is unique in that it combines the expertise of both institutions in relation to urban form and function and landscape evaluation and management for conservation in a jointly awarded
MSc postgraduate degree.

Duration: 12 months. Semester 1 comprises 3 modules taught in
NUI Galway; Semester 2 comprises 4 modules taught at
University of Limerick. Students undertake a research project at either NUI Galway or University of Limerick during Semester 3. Students will graduate with a jointly awarded degree.
Entry Graduates with a primary degree in Environmental
Requirements: Sciences/Economics/Engineering or Geography/
Ecology/Biological Sciences who wish to extend their knowledge and skills for a career related to resource management. Candidates must hold at least a 2nd Class
Honours primary degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. Mature students with relevant experience are most welcome to apply. Selection of candidates is based on examination records and relevant past experience.

This programme brings together theory, policy and practice to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and experience that are needed to pursue successful careers in managing environmental resources sustainably. This course combines scene setting lectures by experts (including guest seminars), site visits and experiential learning to encourage students to adopt an informed, creative, innovatory and entrepreneurial approach to problem solving. As the course is structured around research in both institutions that is strongly linked to decision makers in industry and government organisations, it will develop graduates with necessary skills in identifying and evaluating solutions for real world problems.

Many opportunities exist within the greening of the economy as governments, NGOs and companies work to meet environmental targets set within international agreements. Graduates will acquire translational and multidisciplinary skills in the environmental entrepreneurship and sustainability sector enabling them to take on managerial roles within an industrial / corporate setting, or within a regulatory body or consultancy firm. Careers such as Sustainability Officers,
Ecological Consultants, and Environmental Advisors exist within public and private sectors in Ireland and elsewhere.
In addition, opportunities for further research exist.
