Postgraduate Research Opportunity Young Farmer Innovation Practices for Agricultural and Rural Development Applications are invited from candidates for the above 4 year UCD-Teagasc collaborative research project. The research is funded through the Teagasc Walsh Fellowship Scheme and scheduled to begin September 2010. Candidates will have, or expect to obtain by end of 2010, a Masters degree in agriculture, economics, management, agribusiness, commerce, rural development or sociology. The research project will examine farm-based innovation among young farmers in Ireland. It will also examine the factors that influence innovation by these farmers within a context of public policy supports to multifunctional agriculture. The project aims to map out the innovation system that exists for Irish farm households and make a comparison between Ireland’s institutional arrangements for supporting farm-based innovation and those in place in other EU countries. The successful candidate will join the Agribusiness and Rural Development Section in the School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine, UCD where he/she will be expected to register for a PhD degree. During the course of the project the researcher will be based at the Teagasc Rural Economy Research Centre, Athenry and for periods of time at University College Dublin. The value of the Walsh Fellowship is €21,000 per annum (including fees), payable for a maximum of 4 years.
