1. Make a good impression
• Remember that you are representing yourself & Brandeis as you become
part of your organization’s team
• Behave and speak professionally at all times; dress respectfully
• Use email/internet & cell phone for work purposes only while “on duty”
2. Embrace the grunt work
• Not all work is glamorous all of the time - think big picture & consider your
impact on your organization/project/team
3. Ask for things to do
• Supervisors may not be aware of how quickly you can complete work
• Propose project ideas & ask for advice about ways to contribute
– Shows initiative, willingness, & work ethic

• Ask questions - be curious
• Ask to attend meetings & events

9. Reflect on your experience
• Keep track of impressions, accomplishments, frustrations, ideas, etc.
• Create thoughtful written pieces for your Brandeis blog & program sponsor
10. Create a portfolio
• Ask your supervisor about keeping copies of your work that are not
confidential or owned by your organization or its clients
• Collect press releases & articles about your work
• Take photos of your experience, in and outside of the workplace

Risk Awareness
Not an exclusive list but an overview of some types of risk you may encounter
No matter where you are, be mindful of…
• Travel (ex. transportation hazards, personal belongings)
• Health (ex. insurance, vaccinations, illness, conflict/danger)
• Physical hazards (chemicals, machinery, outdoor activity)
• Money (ex. system for handling your money)
• Living situation (ex. lease, roommates, security, valuables)
• Interpersonal (ex. harassment, assault, on-line issues)
• Social media & online presence (ex. be careful what you
say/post on your online sites)
Risk Management
• Educate yourself
• Know company policies & procedures
• Know your (sub)lease terms
• Check with your insurance provider prior to leaving
about regular and/or supplemental policy coverage
• Document incidents with detail
• Establish emergency protocols with family & friends
• Know & trust your boundaries/instincts

academic credit
• Must get internship approved by appropriate faculty member
before you leave campus
• Take a 4-credit seminar in the fall or 1-credit course in summer

• Phone or email to say you are on site & settling in
2. Mid-point of your internship
• Phone chat about progress, goals & achievements so far and
a look toward what is ahead

• Changes in responsibilities, supervision questions,
accomplishments, etc.
