September 25, 2014 Dear Parents, We are off and running in 5th Grade at Dover Intermediate School! One of our targets in Language Arts is to give formal and informal presentations. So, throughout the year, the students will be doing just that. We begin with informal presentations and work our way up to formal presentations. For the first informal presentation, your child will be sharing a little bit about himself/herself as a reader. I have already modeled this presentation so the students know what is expected on their assigned day. If your child was absent when I modeled this presentation, I have assigned them a later date for his/her presentation so he/she can see what is expected from the peer presentations. On your child’s assigned day, your child will share his/her reading interests with the class. Here’s what he/she will need: A visual aid to share with the class about books, magazines, newspapers or articles he/she has enjoyed reading. This visual aid can be a variety of things, for example: o A bag packed with books, magazines, newspaper, or newspaper articles that he/she has read and enjoyed. If your child no longer has the reading material, he/she can make copies of the material or design the materials instead. o A poster with sketches or printed images of the books, magazines, newspaper, or articles that he/she has read and enjoyed. o A PowerPoint presentation saved on a USB drive to share at school with images of his/her favorite reading material. At least 8 items should be included. (Remember if the books are in a series, the series only counts as 1 item.) As your child presents, he/she will explain why or how he/she chose that material to read and why he/she enjoyed reading it. Be ready to answer questions from the “audience.” Preparing the visual aid is homework; no class time will be given. Also, please have your child practice at home; this will help make him/her feel more comfortable when he/she presents in class. I can’t wait to hear more about your child’s reading interests. I always collect many good titles of children’s literature to pick up and read from students’ book presentations, and their classmates often add titles to the “Must-Reads” list! I appreciate your taking the time to help your child prepare for this presentation. Sincerely, Mrs. Sopko Your child’s assigned day is: ______________________________
