May Kindergarten News May is finally here, and hopefully all the April showers will bring us some May flowers. Planting flowers and cleaning up garbage are great ways to help make our Earth a more beautiful place. On April 22 we celebrated Earth Day. Even though we teach the students that “every day is earth day”, during that week our activities focused on how we could be more earth friendly. Many books were read about reusing, reducing and recycling and we brainstormed different ways we can help keep our world the beautiful place God created. Cleaning up garbage from our front yard and courtyard was a fun way to keep our school community clean. Students also used recyclable materials to make creative bird feeders for our bird friends in the area. It is very exciting to watch the birds come and visit for a snack outside our front window. A big focus last month in math was addition. Students learned how to use pictures, number and words to explain number stories relating to addition. Games such as “Shake and Spill” and “Domino Math” were great games to play to help practise addition skills. Students also stamped two different coloured petals to create a flower and wrote a number and word sentence to explain their art piece. Math is always a natural part of our play, but practising addition and subtraction skills at home in a fun and creative way is always encouraged. The creativity is our classroom is always abundant! Building with wooden blocks, Picket pieces and Bristle blocks continue to be favourite areas of creative play. Painting with a variety of materials such as rollers, medicine droppers, and vegetables result in interesting patterns. A big thank you goes out to our parent council, Mrs. Jorge and Mrs. DeLuca for bringing MTC Life Dance to our school. Every Tuesday for the month of April, students moved and danced enthusiastically with dance instructor Migel Matinez. What a great way to get together with all our FDK friends and have fun while getting active. The virtue for April was Love. Students reflect on showing Jesus’ love daily in our morning prayer: “Help me Jesus everyday, to show your love in my own way. In all my work, in all my play, in what I do and what I say.” Students are reminded to always show Jesus’ love in everything they do at school. Being kind and respectful to their friends and teachers shows love. Reminders: o We recommend children dress in layers, so items of clothing can be removed if the children get too warm during outdoor play. (ie; short sleeved t-shirt, sweater, light jacket) o Please send in a new summer set of extra clothing for the classroom. Long sleeved shirt and long warm pants will be too warm to change into. o A reminder that students are expected to change into indoor running shoes, which remain at school. Please continue to practice tying shoe laces if your child does not have velcro shoes. o A sun hat and pre-applied sun screen is recommended daily as the weather gets warmer. o Any donations of sidewalk chalk would be greatly appreciated. Students enjoy using it during outdoor play and go through it very quickly. o We are all out of tissues and we have a lot of runny noses! Tissue donations would be appreciated too. o Thank you for spending the time to read and complete Chime-In activities with your children. Students are very proud to share their work. o Kindy read and return your Snuggle-Ups books for exchange.
