FOR INCOMING EXCHANGE STUDENTS
ACADEMIC YEAR 2014-2015
HOUSING
Once you have been accepted for an exchange into our University as an exchange student, the Housing Service of
the “International Students and Scholars Office of Grenoble University – ISSO” will help you find
accommodation for the duration of your stay in Grenoble (the month of intensive French classes is not included).
You will receive an e-mail that informs you of the possibility to fill in the housing application form online (with
your personal login and password).
To choose your accommodation properly, please read carefully the description of the residences. You can choose
between:
• traditional residence : 9m2, simple comfort (collective kitchen, washroom facilities are shared and nongendered and centrally located on each floor), Wi-Fi Internet connection (around 160 Euros/month).
• refurbished residence : 12m2, more comfort, private washroom facilities, shared kitchen, Wi-Fi Internet
connection (around 300 Euros/month).
Please note that refurbished residences are in priority allocated to students coming in Grenoble for two semesters.
• private residence : 12m2, even more comfort, private washroom facilities, Wi-Fi Internet connection (around
450 to 600 Euros/month).
• accommodation through a private individual : you can have temporary accommodation when you arrive and
then find by yourself accommodation in town, alone or with flatmate(s). Then, you must know that owners
generally ask for a “guarantor” for the accommodation, i.e. a person who will act as a guarantor in case there is a
problem paying the rent.
The applications will be processed within two sessions (the deadline are not negotiable):
• Before the 10th of July 2014 if you arrive in September / October (1st semester)
• Before the 15th of November 2014 if you arrive in January / February (2nd semester)
• Apart from these two sessions: the application must be sent at least one month before the beginning of your
stay.
Your housing posting will be directly sent to your personal address one month before your arrival.

ENROLLMENT - Registration
Administrative registration at our university is only carried out after your arrival in Grenoble.
You will need the following documents:
• a copy of your student card from your home university for the academic year 2014/2015 or a certificate which
indicates that you have paid the corresponding tuition fees.
• 2 ID photos
• a photocopy of your passport or identity card
• a proof of your medical insurance coverage (mandatory)
• a copy of your birth certificate
When you arrive you will have to take out a civil liability insurance. This insurance covers all risks linked to your
academic programme (physical injuries or material damage which you may cause). The amount due for academic
year 2013/2014 was about 25 Euros/year.
SOCIAL SECURITY - Health Insurance
In France Health Insurance is mandatory. Whatever your nationality, registration at the Student Social Security
Coverage is required (minimum cost: around 211 Euros).
Except in the following cases:
• Students with European nationality will have to present their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Check
the validity date of your card; it should cover the whole academic year. Reimbursement claims are to be
addressed to the “Service International de la Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie” (CPAM).
• Students from Quebec will have to present their RAMQ form n° SE 401 Q 106 (for academic programmes) or Q
104 (for an internship).
Students who come to France for an exchange of less than three months and students who are
over 28 years old cannot take out the French Social Security, they will have to take out insurance
in their country of origin or a private insurance in France.
LONG-STAY VISA (Visa long séjour valant titre de séjour – VLSTS)
• If you are from the European Union (or European Economic Area citizen or from Switzerland), you do not need
a residence permit.
If you are not from the European Union (rest of the world), the visa delivered by the French Consulate abroad is a
long-stay visa and equivalent to a first residence permit.
The French Consulate will give you an OFII form that you will have to send by registered mail to the “Office
Français de l’Immigration et de l’Intégration- OFII” within three months of your arrival. You would also have to
add a photocopy of your visa and the ID page of your passport.

If your application is completed, you will receive by mail a certificate of receipt from OFII with:
- a notification for a chest X-ray and medical check-up at the Health Center of Grenoble University
- the list of additional compulsory documents.
Once these formalities have been completed, you must go to the OFII who will check your file and definitively
validate your long-stay visa which will be your residence permit.
The complete file must include the following documents:
- the photocopy of your passport
- the medical certificate validated by the Health Center
- a proof of address
- an ID photo full face and bare headed
- a tax stamp “timbre fiscal” 58 Euros (available in on www.timbresofii.fr)

INTENSIVE FRENCH CLASSES
French courses (not free of charge) are proposed by the CUEF (Centre Universitaire d’Etudes Françaises), linked
with Stendhal University (Grenoble 3). The CUEF grants a 20% discount off the price advertised to students who
enroll in any Grenoble university as part of a student exchange programme. If you wish to take these classes, you
must enroll directly with the CUEF.
Please send us a copy of your application to CUEF in order to benefit from this discount.

Warning: accommodation applications addressed to the CUEF only concern the period during which intensive
French classes take place.
FRENCH LANGUAGE COURSES
Joseph Fourier University organizes and finances 2 sessions of French classes each year, one from September to
December and one from January to April (a total of 20 hours per session, 2 hours a week). Each student is asked
to take a mandatory test in French in order to form groups based on proficiency level. Further information will be
provided after registration by your International Relations Coordinator.

WARNING: You will need to come to the sessions with a copy of your health insurance certificate. (Refer to:
Social Security / Health Insurance).
This information session is a general presentation describing the various procedures you will need to follow at the
beginning of your stay.
During this meeting, you will be given the document « Autorisation d’Inscription » (Enrolment authorization)
essential for registration at the university.
Then, the registration will take place in your host faculty in Grenoble (by appointment).

STUDENT LIFE - the ”IntEGre” association
To facilitate your arrival in Grenoble, the “IntEGre” association of international students can help you with the
following activities:
• The IntEGre “sponsoring” system consists of putting in touch an international student with a French student to
help the foreign student when he/she arrives in Grenoble. The mentor student commits himself/herself to help
the foreign student with his/her administrative procedure on arrival, but also have him/her discover Grenoble.
• The “Tandem” system puts you in contact with a person who is learning your language and wishes to improve
it. This is a linguistic exchange but also a cultural one between the two persons involved.
Others activities offered by the “IntEgre” association (in September):
Practical visit of the town (transport in Grenoble, opening a bank account, etc.)
Historical visit of the town (to discover its cultural dimensions)
Visit of the campus (the different university restaurants, the Health Center, etc.)

STUDENT LIFE - EVE Building ”Espace Vie Etudiant”
The EVE building is an essential place on campus where concerts, conferences, film presentations, dancing take
