Falling in love with movies
My name is SOOHWAN KIM. I am from South Korea. I worked
as an army officer for more than 2 years. I was in charge of Communications group related with such as wrote speeches, made
video clips and press releases.
I graduated college 3 years ago and majored 2 degrees in PR
and Marketing. My hobby is listening to music. I am going to tell
you about a lot of opportunities to enjoy music in New York.

My name is Mihyun Moon and I am
from South Korea. I came to New York
9 months ago. The purpose of coming
was that I wanted to improve my English skill and to get an experience in my
dream field. I majored in history and
mass communication in my country.
That’s why I wanted to be a documentary Program Director.
This is fall – fresh air, clear skies and
beautiful colors. How do you imagine
the fall? What do you want to do? It’s
good to start new love. Even if you don’t
find new love, that’s okay because there
are many things to do alone. Whether
or not you start new love, whatever.

My name is Ismail Dabbashi I'm from Libya. I’ve been
here for 3 years. I like to play soccer, watch movies
and listen to music. I went to Manhattan International
High School here in midtown Manhattan. It is an international high school and I met a lot of people from
different countries, like Ecuador, Egypt, Colombia,
Yemen, Brazil, France and more. When I was in Libya I
used to play tennis.
I am attending this class (Gazette) because I would
like to review some movies. I like action and comedy
movies. In the past I've watched Colombiana, Green
Hornet, Captain America and a lot more.

The NYFF (New York Film Festival) will
run from September 30 to October 16.
You can meet famous actors as well as
good movies. This is a chance to have
an amazing experience. The festival
comes only one time a year, in fall. If
you come, you might find your new love.
If you don’t fine one, that’s okay. It is
enough that you see a good movie in
fall at Lincoln Center.

I am a university student in my
own country whose major is art. I
have one more year before I
graduate. Man
y students in my department
think of me as a person who is
really discerning. I can understand that. I always discuss
some issues (maybe always it is
about art or ethics) deeply and I
analyze other students’ art work.
I always try to make a new view
or criteria of interpreting art.
I am glad that I have an opportunity to write about contemporary art. I promise that I will try to
write on valid issues of contemporary art.
What I want to do in this workshop class, as I express little bit
above, is introducing what is going on the contemporary art, especially in New York. Needless to
say NYC is the hottest place for a
contemporary art.
I spent a lot of time searching
and discussing art but this is my
first time writing a review or journal.
Fortunately, from September to
October, there are so many exhibitions held in the city. Exhibitions which start in the fall are a
result of considerable thought,
and the quality will be high.

Hi, My name is Steve Song. I
came here to study English, and
I’m also planning to enter college
because I’ve wanted to study
biology in America. When I first
came here, I lived in NJ for 3
months and then I moved to NYC
almost 3 months ago because
NYC provides a lot of chances to
do everything.
In the last 3 months, I’ve experienced many things. That’s why I

METROPOLITAN OPERA

Here is some information about the student tickets. The Met Opera web page says

We are located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, between 62nd and 65th Streets and Columbus.
If you are a full time student, you can get a ticket for
a reasonable price. Valid student ID card must be
presented at the time of purchase.
When I visited New York 3 years ago, I experienced beautiful Operas such
as La Boheme, Rigoletto, among others. It was a great opportunity to feel
how real New Yorkers live, what they do, how they dress up especially at
formal events as well. Even though you are just a student here you can
mix with New Yorkers. A lot of gorgeous people are there, it is the other
point you should enjoy at the Met Opera. I strongly recommend you that
dress up formally, please no jeans, no shorts. During the intermission,
some snacks and beverages are available at the small bar. You can get a
good view from the 3rd floor and it is an important photo zone.
If you experienced the MET Opera once, then you might be there every
day. Some of the performances will be not opened as student tickets. But
there should be the other one opened for the students. You can also buy
tickets via phone call. (212-362-6000)
Mihyun’s Movie Space

My object was to volunteer in the New York Film Festival before I came to New York. It was accomplished.
I am excited to volunteer at the NYFF. When I studied
at my university, the Jeon Ju International Film Festival opened in town. So, I used to go to see good movies. It was a good experience. So, I recommend that
you must go to the Lincoln Center in order to see
good movies. When you go to the NYFF, You will get a
good memory for life.
Most of all, the most noticeable movies are opening
and closing movies. Though these are very expensive
and hard to get a tickets for. It will be awesome. And
the other thing is Chaplin’s The Gold Rush (1925).
Though it is old, it is a great movie. If you like animation, don’t miss the Miyazaki Hayao series.

with my friends and
we had a lot of fun.
The movie is about a
Columbian girl her
name is Cataleya .
When she was young
her parents got killed
by a gang . After her
parents got killed she
came to the USA to live with her uncle. She
told her uncle that she wants to be a killer .
Her uncle said ok because he was a killer
too. Her uncle said to her that she have to be
smart to be a killer. After she grow up she
started hunting the people responsible for
the murder of her parents. The gang found
out so they killed her uncle and his wife. Cataleya was really sad and mad because her
uncle was like a father and a teacher at the
same time. Then she went to the gang and
killed all of them. I give this movie four
stars. don't watch the move if you don't like
blood.

Fashion or passion for what I want to get!
NY is really famous as the center of
fashion like Paris or Milan. In NY there are
many famous designer brand shops. Besides, the display of the store is artistic so
even if you can’t afford to buy, you just
can enjoy! I want to introduce you to exciting stores and events.
In SOHO, it’s no exaggeration that there
are all of the brands in the world. You can
feel the air of fashion as you visit there.
But if you’d like to get something special,
I would recommend Prada. The store is
located at 575 Broadway. You can’t miss
it ! The store is designed by Rem Koolhaas, famous Duch modernist. When you
enter the store you will be amazed by the
sunken floor and I was reminded of
a“wave.” On the wave powerful Prada
pieces are displayed and they change
every season.

have an invitation card and it might
make us feel depressed but just go Lincoln Center and they have some live
shows on screen and there are nice

4 Is art hard to understand? The exhibition
has many art works that you can just feel
what it is and just put your clues together.
The first time when you see his painting, you
can see a woman who emerges in violent
brush strokes. When you c loser, you can
find astonishing tangles of pigments. After
tangles of pigments, you can figure out what
is inside this picture and what is inside of the
artist, his identity. As a art student, I am
convinced he is a great painter. Because you
can feel the artist’s breath in every corner of
the painting. You can know what I am saying
when you see his paintings.
At retrospective of the art of Willem de Kooning(d.1997), a Dutch American abstract
expressionist artist, is on going at MoMA. I
visited the preview exhibition on Saturday.
There were so many visitors who demonstrated de Kooning’s greatness. There are
nearly 200 art works from his early period in
Holland to the latest period. So it is really
easy to figure out the evolution on de Kooning’s painting. This exhibition is the first
time to show de Kooning’s entire opus and
includes not only paintings but also sculptures, drawings and prints.
The most popular paintings are Pink Angels
(1945), Excavation (1950), and third Woman
series (1950–53).
Exhibition is from September 18, 2011 to
January 18, 2012.
