CHW 3M1 – WORLD HISTORY TO THE 1600s
CULMINATING TASK
You will choose the form that your CPT will take. Choose the task that best fits your
skills and interests.
Argumentative Research Essay
You will write a 1,250 word (5 page) argumentative research essay. You must
include a Works Cited page listing all your sources in APA format according to
Campion’s Assignment Guide, which is available online on the Library page of
Campion’s website. Choose one of the following topics:
■ Choose a political leader discussed in our course and evaluate how they
followed the lessons of power as taught by Niccolo Machiavelli in The
Prince.
■ Examine the political career of Augustus Caesar. Is Augustus a good example of Plato’s Philosopher
King as described in Book 6 of The Republic?
Video
You will film a 10 minute sit-down interview with three historical figures. You will
research the lives/careers of the three figures you chose and write a script with 5
questions and each figure’s responses. In addition to their responses, the figures
should also interact with each other since they have a lot in common. The responses
must be historically accurate and reflect your understanding and research. Your script
and works cited page must be handed in. Your Works Cited page should list all your
sources in APA format according to Campion’s Assignment Guide, which is available
online on the Library page of Campion’s website. You may act out all the parts
yourself or use actors. Choose one of the following topics or create your own. A
created topic must be approved by me. Your video will be played for the class.

Great Conquerors – Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, Ramses II
Antagonists – Moses, Xerxes, Hannibal
Thinkers – Imhotep, Hippocrates, Cicero
Powerpoint Presentation
You will create and present an original power point presentation on one of the following
topics:

The Art of the War – Choose any three battles that occurred until the year
476CE. Summarize each battle and describe the specific tactics used by each
leader in the battle. Then you will cite passages from Sun Tzu’s The Art of
War and explain how they apply to the specifics each battle. Who best
adhered to Sun Tzu’s lessons?
Your final slides should be a Works Cited page listing all your sources in APA format
according to Campion’s Assignment Guide, which is available online on the Library page of
Campion’s website.
Magazine
You will choose ONE civilization from the following list. You will research your chosen
civilization and present your understanding of it in the form of a magazine that will include
several components. You MUST cite your sources at the end of each article and include
a Works Cited page at the end of your magazine. You may choose from the following
civilizations:
The Aztecs ■ The Inca ■ The Mayans ■ China ■ Japan ■ India ■ Carthage
Achaemenid Empire ■ Ancient Africa
You will write several articles that describe some of the contributions of your chosen
civilization. Remember that magazines are a visual medium so you must consider the
overall aesthetics of your magazine by including graphics and appropriate layout.
Your magazine must include the following:
1) Cover
Make an attractive cover that includes the titles of some of your articles.

2) Table of Contents
Make a table of contents that lists all your article titles and which page they’re on.

3) Article covering a major event
Throughout your research you will learn about several significant events in the history of
your civilization. You will write an article discussing an important event as if it is happening
or just happened. Be sure to report on the event impartially and follow news reporting
conventions.

4) Advice Column

The advice column is your way of demonstrating understanding of social norms in your
civilization. Write a letter to the magazine from the perspective of a person living in the
civilization and ask a question requesting advice on a situation. Then you will respond from
the magazine’s perspective on how to proceed.

5) Interview With a Prominent Person
You will surely encounter important people in your chosen civilization throughout your
research. You will rework your research into an interview with the important person. You
will ask questions about the person’s life, career, and opinions and provide responses from
the figure’s perspective.
(300 words)
6) List of the Top 5 Contributions
You will include a list of the top 5 contributions made by your civilization in any area.
Provide pictures and a short description for each contribution. Contributions can be works
of art, literature, technology, or discoveries in various fields.
(200 words)
7) List of the Top 5 People
You will include a list of the top 5 people in your civilization’s history. Provide a picture
and a short description of each figure along with their significance to the development of
your civilization. Important people can include political leaders, warriors, scientists,
artists, religious figures, or inventors.

PROCESS WORK AND DUE DATES
Proposal
DUE MONDAY OCTOBER 27
You will write one paragraph explaining what form your culminating will take and which topic you chose. The
more thought and detail you put into it, the more feedback I can give you.
Annotated Bibliography
DUE TUESDAY NOVEMBER 18
You will submit an annotated bibliography that includes at least 4 sources, 1 of which must be a book. You will reference each source in APA format and write a brief summary of the source and its value to the CPT. See the
attached sheet for more information.
Conference
SCHEDULED FOR THE LAST WEEK OF DECEMBER
We will do a lottery to select conference dates. Nine students will conference each day. At the conference, you will
present a skeleton which outlines the structure of your culminating. Those doing an essay will present their thesis,
main points, and supporting evidence. For those doing the video, you will present a point form summary of the
questions and responses that you will ask your historical figures. For those doing a power point, you will outline
what will be on each slide. Finally, for those doing a magazine, you will present an outline of each article and the
content covered in each. The skeleton templates are available on the Culminating Task page of the CHW 3M1 website. It is your responsibility to print off your respective skeleton.
Final Due Date
DUE TUESDAY JANUARY 13
You will submit your final product on Tuesday January 13. Late assignments will not be accepted. Those of you submitting Powerpoint presentations will submit them on the 13th and present
them on the 14th and 15th. The video/Powerpoint you submit on the
13th MUST be identical to the one you present later in the week.
