BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY The Bible and the Cyrus Cylinder: ‘Ancient Texts, Modern Contexts’

The Department of Classical Studies presents
The Bible and the Cyrus Cylinder:
‘Ancient Texts, Modern Contexts’
Dr. Christopher A. Farrell, Lecturer in Classics
University of Exeter Department of Classics and Ancient History
Description: "Before Xerxes and Darius there was Cyrus, founder
of the Persian Empire. He was admired by the Greeks, regarded by
the Jews as a liberator, and now is perceived as a champion of 'human
rights'. Cyrus also holds a place of honor in modern Iranian identity.
But how do modern uses of ancient figures, texts, and objects
change the way that we display and talk about them?"
