SULLIVAN SCHOOL CATHOLIC COMMUNITY CULTURE AND CARING ACTION TEAM MEETING [CCCCAT] Wednesday, May 4th, 2016 @ 3:15pm Room 204 MINUTES Attendees: Veronica Abdou (Teacher), Daniel Birkenbergs (Principal), Amanda D’Souza (Teacher), Kate Hann (CYW) Amanda Reid (Public Health Nurse, Region of Peel), Sue Scott (Teacher), Violet Skirten (City of Brampton) Regrets: Jason Senechal (Peel Regional Police NPU Officer), David Seville (Peel Regional Police NPU Officer), Alexandra Casanova (Parent) 1. Welcome & Introductions Dan Birkenbergs welcomed team and began with a prayer Dan thanked individuals for their active participation and invited round-table introductions 2. Review: Purpose of Committee & Committee Objectives / Goals for 2015-2016 Progress Report Dan reviewed context for committee; required under Safe Schools legislation Catholic values and faith at centre of committee; team to focus on safety, security, care and well-being of students Committee to function as advisory to school administration; whole-school, solution-focused approach to identified needs At November 2015 meeting, CCCCA Team set goals for 3 areas of focus for 2015-2016 school year to improve the sense of community and belonging at Father C.W. Sullivan i. Faith Focus: Plan an in-school half-day or retreat for all grades across the school focused on the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations (OCSGE) half-day retreat held in the afternoon of March 8th (same day as Lenten Mass); wonderful success and activities were enjoyed by entire school community 3 themes for retreat activities: Lent, Year of Mercy & OCSGE Similar retreats likely to continue in to 2016-2017 school year and beyond ii. Community & Belonging Focus: Explore opportunities to enhance students’ feelings of a “welcoming and caring” community at Father C.W. Sullivan Dan reiterated initiatives already occurring within the school in this regard (e.g., Anti-Bullying lesson from ROP, Virtues/OCSGE assemblies, Gotcha awards) School will continue to capitalize on various opportunities to build community and prevent bullying through various activities throughout the school year Creating Pathway to Success initiatives will also support community development and strengthen transitions for students year-to-year Two unique opportunities occurred on February 12th: Junior NBA day for Grade 8 students and Rings & Rocks program for Grade 2/3 to 6/7 students; both experiences were enjoyed by students Upcoming events include Track & Field Day on May 11th for Grades 4-8 students and school-wide Play Day on June 21st (activities to be enhanced this year through efforts of Catholic School Council) iii. Health & Wellness Focus: OPHEA Healthy Schools Certification Involves continuation of programs such as PALS and school-wide “Play Day”; play day scheduled for June 21st; theme TBA Pursuit of OPHEA Healthy Schools certification; initiative headed up by Amanda D. & Veronica, with support from Amanda R. - Amanda D. provided a brief update of certification process and current plan; a “Gold” certification is a possibility! - Dan thanked Veronica, Amanda D. & Amanda R. for their efforts and support of this initiative - Moving forward in to 2016-2017, a student-driven committee will work to include PSAs about Active & Healthy Living and launching “Fun Fit Friday” physical activities for the whole school Father C.W. Sullivan continues to engage with the Region of Peel & City of Brampton for the Peel School Travel Planning Program - Program promotes safe and healthy transportation to school - Student walkabout with Region of Peel and City of Brampton staff occurred in December 2015; community survey completed in January 2016 (data currently being analyzed) - Amanda R. shared STP report with committee and indicated that good progress has been made this year and that this plan will guide the STP in to 2016-2017 (see attached report) - City of Brampton report provided by Violet indicates that marked crosswalk will be placed at “T-intersection” of Pennywood Road and Seaborn Road likely in the fall of 2016 - Additional items requested by the December 2015 walkabout such as speed studies, additional pavement markings, etc., have been forwarded to City of Brampton Traffic Services and are marked for action within the 2016 calendar year - Dan will be connecting with the Board Plant Department to discuss line markings and driveway signage in June 2016; work likely to occur in fall of 2016 3. Open Discussion No additional items brought forward Dan thanked the entire team for their input and commitment to the Father C.W. Sullivan School community; an open invitation to all team members was extended to join the committee again in 2016-2017 Next Meeting 2016-2017 School Year: October 2016 – exact date and time to be communicated in the early fall
