Catholic schools are faith communities. We – parents, students, teachers, administrative and support staff – walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is the ‘together’ that we grow. And as we learn from nature, growth relies on sun and water and nutrition. Otherwise, it may fade away and even die. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. But the response of each of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local parish, our home, or our Catholic school community. Turn then, O most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruits of your womb, Jesus. Our school community will celebrate Catholic Education Week 2013 in ways that are appropriate to our students’ age. We invite you to participate in one or other of these activities as your personal time and work schedule may permit. O clement! O loving! O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you do we cry poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning, and weeping in this valley of tears. There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week: Monday – Faith that is Rooted Tuesday – Faith that is Nurtured Wednesday – Faith that is Discerned Thursday – Faith that is Witnessed Friday – Faith that is Celebrated God Calls Us to His Church Every year, the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) provides our Catholic schools with a resource kit to help schools prepare for Catholic Education Week. Using these resources as well as our own developed activities we have prepared a series of activities which will highlight how our school is ‘Growing Together in Faith’. We hope to see many of you during our school celebrations. The staff and students of Our Lady of Mercy School would like to extend a special congratulations to our Grade 2 students who received the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time on Saturday April 20, 2013. This was a very special time for these students and their families and our thoughts and prayers were with them. Virtue of the Month MOTHER’S DAY Mother's Day is a time of commemoration and celebration for mom. It is a time of breakfast in bed, family gatherings and crayon scribbled "I Love You’s”. It is a time for a special dinner, some One of the great wonders of the world we live in is that no two flowers, a visit or a phone call. The earliest Mother's Day celebrapeople are exactly alike. Sometimes differences are scary – especially if we haven’t During this time many of England’s poor worked as servants for learned about or don’t understand how people are different. the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the ACCEPTANCE The virtue of acceptance describes our ability to look at the attitudes and actions of those around us and then just stop and consider without judging them. The virtue of acceptance means that we look beyond what we see – a person’s skin colour, ethnic background, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation and see a person created and loved by God. It’s especially important for us to stop and think that if what we are made uncomfortable by seeing or hearing others act differently then we might choose to act. An accepting person … servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch. As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honour the "Mother Church" - the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration. People began honouring their mothers as well as the church. • is friendly and open to all God’s people, regardless of age, beliefs, gender, culture or ability • sees the positive traits in all people even if she or he disagrees with them HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! • avoids judging or stereotyping others • understands that there may be more than one way to do things • sticks up for the “underdog” Let us pray this month for the grace and courage to be people of acceptance – to have the strength to trust that God is at work in everyone’s life despite what we think.
