This is a year-long course which is divided into two parts:
• Part One: Italy @ The Movies
Lectures take place on Monday 5-6 in Dillon Theatre in the Concourse.
Lecturer: M. Hodder.
Course description: In semester 1 only, students will also study important Italian films
through which the main trends in Italian history and culture over the past 150 years will
be introduced. Screenings will be arranged by the lecturers, and in-class discussions will
take place on topics such as Italian Unification, Fascism, the Holocaust, Post-war reconstruction, Political Terrorism, and also aspects of Italian life such as the Mafia, the
economic boom, family relations and emigration. Lecturers will introduce the films and
place them in their historical context, while attention will also be paid to the cinematic
style adopted in the films.
Methods of assessment and examination:
You will be assessed entirely by continuous assessment, based primarily on the personal
written reflections they will compose on each film covered during the course. There is no
written exam at the end of this part of the course.
Language of instruction: English
Texts: Handouts and reading lists will be supplied where necessary.
• Part Two: Language in Practice
These classes take place on Thursdays 9-10.
Course description: This course helps students to develop their spoken Italian so that at the
end of the year they are able to conduct a conversation in Italian.
Method of assessment and examination: Attendance and participation in conversation
classes (20%) and an end of year oral exam (80%)
Languages of instruction: Italian
