In order to take IT 112, you must be here for the full academic year. Course IT124 Italian Language 1 IT125 Italian Language 2 Semester 1 2 Contact hours/weekly 5 5 ECTS 5 5 Lecturers: M. Hodder; F. Magnoni; M. Inglese Course description: The course, open to all students, both beginners and non beginners, focuses on the four main language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) using regular practice based, as much as possible, on authentic material carefully selected to provide a gradual introduction to the structures and functions of the language. Students will achieve a good level of fluency by the end of the year to enable them to cope with everyday situations in Italy. Students will also be offered additional tuition in the multi-media labs and revision classes are organized during the year to help students learning a new language. Method of assessment and examination: Continuous assessment is a central part of the course and students will hand in homework each week which will be corrected by the lecturer. At the end of each semester, there is a written language paper and a lab test. For a more detailed breakdown of marks see Allocation of marks (p. 4) Languages of instruction: English and Italian Core texts: Parliamo Italiano, Student Book. 2 Course IT112 Introduction to Italian Culture and Language Semester 1&2 Contact hours/weekly 1 ECTS 5 This is a year-long course which is divided into two parts: • Part One: Italy @ The Movies Lectures take place on Monday 5-6 in Dillon Theatre in the Concourse. Lecturer: M. Hodder. Course description: In semester 1 only, students will also study important Italian films through which the main trends in Italian history and culture over the past 150 years will be introduced. Screenings will be arranged by the lecturers, and in-class discussions will take place on topics such as Italian Unification, Fascism, the Holocaust, Post-war reconstruction, Political Terrorism, and also aspects of Italian life such as the Mafia, the economic boom, family relations and emigration. Lecturers will introduce the films and place them in their historical context, while attention will also be paid to the cinematic style adopted in the films. Methods of assessment and examination: You will be assessed entirely by continuous assessment, based primarily on the personal written reflections they will compose on each film covered during the course. There is no written exam at the end of this part of the course. Language of instruction: English Texts: Handouts and reading lists will be supplied where necessary. • Part Two: Language in Practice These classes take place on Thursdays 9-10. Course description: This course helps students to develop their spoken Italian so that at the end of the year they are able to conduct a conversation in Italian. Method of assessment and examination: Attendance and participation in conversation classes (20%) and an end of year oral exam (80%) Languages of instruction: Italian 3 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION • • Regular attendance is mandatory in First Year Italian and a proportion of the final marks will be given for this requirement Exams: Please note that the dates for in-class tests will be communicated to you in class and are also given on the syllabus for each semester. Please put these dates in your diaries immediately. It is your responsibility to make sure that you are in Galway for all exams.
