Course Description:
This course is designed to provide you with entry-level knowledge of combative sports. As a result of the class, all students are expected to
improve their knowledge base regarding skills, basic techniques, and basic principles of the various martial arts covered.
Course Objectives:
Upon course completion, each student is expected to be able to:
1. Execute fundamental stand-up techniques and positioning during ground work.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the terminology and basic principles of martial arts covered in class
3. Evaluate martial art competitions and identify techniques used
In accordance with the college’s conceptual framework, this course will provide an opportunity for students to
collaborate with and learn from each other to better understand the various martial arts covered
Recommended Text:
“Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Theory and Practice”. Gracie, R., Gracie, R., Peligro, P., Danaher, J., Gracie, R.
Dress Code:
Suitable clothing for grappling is required. Due to the nature of the course it is suggested you wear clothing you can accept may get
damaged as a result of participation. It is highly recommended you purchase tight-fitting material such as “Under Armor” (or a similar type of
material) shirts and shorts as loose-fitting clothing can be a hindrance in martial arts. No shoes can be worn during class. It is also recommended—
but not required—that you wear a mouthpiece during participation. Additional material such as an athletic supporter (males) or a sports bra
(females) is recommended during participation. If you have a martial arts “gi”, you are welcome to wear it during class.
Please expect that traditional clothing (shorts, t-shirt) may become damaged through normal participation in grappling-style activities. You
may wish to bring replacement clothes in the event this occurs. Failure to bring proper clothing is not an excuse to miss class or not participate, and
will not excuse you from participation. For the health and hygiene of both you and your fellow students, please ensure you bring clean, sanitized
clothing to each class. PLEASE NOTE: HHP-clothing from the Cage cannot be worn in this course.
Attendance:


No attendance make-up is permitted. Attendance will be taken precisely at 10:05 each class session; therefore, if you arrive after roll
call you are considered tardy. Failure to notify the instructor of your late arrival will most likely result in your being marked as absent
Missing 6 or more academic hours of class is considered excessive. An hour class absence = 1 miss and a 1.5 hour class absence =
1.5 misses. In PEB classes students have the option of receiving an ‘S’ or a ‘U’ grade which will not be used in GPA calculation (with
an ‘S’ you still get the hour credit). This will be contracted by the last formal day of class. You may not receive an ‘S’ if you miss
more than 6 academic hours; you will receive the grade you earn. Once a grade has been issued, no S/U to letter grade change (or
letter grade to S/U) will be permitted

Habitual tardiness (arriving after your name has been called) will negatively affect your performance and grade. Three (3) “tardies”
will equal one (1) absence.

Should you be absent, you are responsible for getting any missed material from a classmate. The instructor cannot be expected to go
over past material with each student who misses class
Hydration:
Due to the nature of the course, it is recommended students bring their own individual water bottle for use during class. However, all
drinks must be kept around the perimeter of the room; water is not allowed on the mats. As conditioning exercises will get more intense,
you should keep a snack with you in case you start to feel light-headed.
Internet Usage:
Numerous quizzes will consist of viewing videos on the internet. Students are expected to be fluent in their ability to access and watch
internet-delivered material. If you feel you may have issues with internet access, please familiarize yourself with the computer facilities on campus.
Grading:
The Grading System to be used is based on percentages: A = 94% and above, A- = 90-93, B+ = 86-89, B = 84-85, B- = 80-83, C+ =
76-79, C = 74-75, C- = 70-73, D+ = 66-69, D = 64-65, D- = 60-63, F = 59 and below. “I”s and “W”s are not available as a grade once
coursework has been completed just because you do not like your grade.. If you stop attending class and do not have yourself
formally dropped (your name is still on the roll), you will receive an ‘F’ in the class. Tuesday, November 4th is the last day to
withdraw from a class. Remember that you are only allowed 6 Ws throughout your academic career and drops must be
initiated by the student. Students need to get a drop form from the Welcome Center, fill it out, and have it signed by the
instructor by the due date. Do this early as not all instructors are on campus full time.
Academic Dishonesty
Students are expected to abide by the university’s academic honesty policy in all matters concerning this course.
(http://www.uh.edu/dos/hdbk/acad/achonpol.html). In particular, plagiarism, “Representing as one’s own work the work of another without
acknowledging the source,” whether intentional or unintentional, will not be tolerated. Any form of cheating will result in an F in the course.
Safety Concerns:
As with any physical activity class, there is an inherent risk of injury associated with participation. The University of
Houston does not carry Health Insurance for students in activity classes. The Department of Health and Human Performance
and its instructors are in no way responsible for injuries as a result of participation in its classes.
ADA Statement:
This course is dedicated to providing the least restrictive learning environment for all students. This class promotes equity in
academic access through the implementation of reasonable accommodations as required by the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of
1973, title V, section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, which will enable students with disabilities to
