The Symphony at WKU – 2013 Concert Tour of China MUS 538 – Performance Tour Graduate 3 Credit Hours Instructor: Dr. Bill Scott Email: bill.scott@wku.edu Office: MRH 209 Phone:745-6521 Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to perform in collaborative, international concerts with partner universities in China: 1) North China Electric Power University – Beijing and Baoding; and 2) Hebei University – Baoding. Student will have the opportunity to perform with professional, featured guest artists and/or musicians from partner universities. Learning Outcomes: Students will have: 1. An opportunity to engage with Partner Universities in China 2. Practical experience for performing in conjunction with international study 3. A collaborative exchange opportunity, allowing them to perform with professional musicians/artists from China 4. Maintain full participation in all rehearsals, performances, information sessions and language sessions leading up to the tour including all assigned readings. 2. Maintain full participation in all activities during the tour. 3. Keep a written travel journal with daily entries of activities and performances to be submitted to the instructor upon return. 4. Present a 10-20 minute program to a class of school children, which highlights the differences and similarities between the American and Chinese cultures. The presentation should include power point slides and/or other visual and audio aids and should be age appropriate for the intended audience. The project is to be video-taped and will be graded based on the overall presentation. Presentation to an club or other group of people could be substituted for school class (i.e. Rotary Club, nursing home, boy scout club, etc.). 5. Post one journal entry on The Symphony at WKU China Tour Blog. Grading Scale: 1. Full participation in all rehearsals and performances 85% 2. Full participation in language sessions 5% 3. School Presentation 10% Required Materials: 1. Performance music for tour (provided) 2. Lined journal 3. Instrument and necessary supplies 4. Performance attire 5. Passport 6. Visa This program is a unique opportunity to apply the lessons learned in the classroom in a practical, handson setting. Application Process: The first step is to send an inquiry from the link found on the program web site. Then, you must successfully audition for the orchestra. After acceptance into the Orchestra, you will be instructed on how to apply for the program via the Study Away web site (www.wku.edu/studyaway). An initial payment is required when you apply for the program. If accepted, the Study Away Office will communicate the payment and registration process. Xi’an - Beijing – USA Flight: Xian – Beijing - USA Participating in this Faculty-Led Study Abroad Program The sole purpose of this course is for education of the registered students. All those participating are asked to be on time and ready on each day of the course. Just as a regular class, you will need to be prepared to complete the coursework that has been assigned by the instructor and be attentive when on tours and fieldwork. By applying for this course, your implied consent to these rules is accepted. 1. Please do not wear attire that advertises any university other than those institutions participating in the program. 2. Please do not wear slogan T-shirts (particularly those that say something that can be construed as lewd), ripped or torn clothing or anything that is not modest. 3. Wear shoes that cover your feet for fieldwork, and something that is very comfortable on your feet while on tours and office visits. 4. We have a schedule to keep. If you do not meet the group at the appointed departure times, you will be left. 5. Room assignments will be made according to gender. Any fees/penalties for destruction of lodging property during the course are the responsibility of those involved with the incident. 6. We will be in tight spaces for traveling; hence, you must confine your packing to a minimum. You are responsible for understanding travel regulations regarding airlines, including possession of prohibited material and security clearance. 7. If you are 21 or over and wish to purchase alcohol where locally permissible, that is your business. However, if you do so and give it to an underage person to consume, you are likely breaking local laws, and could be subject to fines and/or imprisonment. You will not be allowed to consume alcoholic beverages during “class time” unless part of class. Alcohol consumption while traveling in vans is strictly prohibited. 8. You may do as you please “after hours,” but remember, you need to be responsible for your own actions and respectful to others around you. 9. If it is known that you purchase or use illegal drugs at any time during the travel portion of the course, you will be dismissed from the class and must make your own return travel arrangements at your own expense. (See Study Away Student Handbook) 10. Everyone needs to bring enough money (cash, credit/debit cards) to cover their personal expenses, including extra money for unforeseen expenses that might arise. You will be responsible for all noncourse related expenses you incur (i.e. gifts, souvenirs).
