Bloomberg, senior research physiologist at NASA Johnson Space Center, has been reappointed associate team leader of the Sensorimotor Adaptation Team of the National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI). This is his second term as an associate team leader. As associate team leader, Bloomberg will help manage scientists conducting nine projects at six institutions. Projects focus on finding solutions to the coordination and perceptual disturbances experienced during and after space missions as a result of neural adaptation to spaceflight. Research findings will be beneficial to people who suffer from balance disorders on Earth. Bloomberg received his bachelor’s degree in biology and his doctoral degree in neurophysiology, both from McGill University in Canada. He is on the adjunct faculty at University of Houston and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. The NSBRI, funded by NASA, is a consortium of institutions studying the health risks related to long-duration spaceflight. The Institute’s science, technology and education projects take place at more than 60 institutions across the United States. Other NSBRI teams address space health concerns such as bone loss and muscle weakening, cardiovascular changes, radiation exposure, neurobehavioral and psychosocial factors, remote medical care and research capabilities, and habitability and performance issues such as sleep cycles and lunar dust exposure. ###
