Students will develop financial analysis and decision-making skills that will assist them in future studies and/or career opportunities in business. Students will acquire an understanding of accounting for a service and a merchandising business, computerized accounting, financial analysis, and ethics and current issues in accounting. Specific Strands of Study and Expectations include: Fundamental Accounting Practices By the end of this course, students will: Describe the discipline of accounting and its importance for business Describe the differences among the various forms of business organization Demonstrate an understanding of the basic procedures and principles of the accounting cycle for a service business Advanced Accounting Practices By the end of this course, students will: Demonstrate an understanding of the procedures and principles of the accounting cycle for a merchandising business Demonstrate an understanding of the accounting practices for sales tax Apply accounting practices in a computerized environment Internal Control, Financial Analysis, and Decision Making By the end of this course, students will: Demonstrate an understanding of internal control procedures in the financial management of a business Evaluate the financial status of a business by analyzing performance measures and financial statements Explain how accounting information is used in decision making Ethics, Impact of Technology, and Careers By the end of this course, students will: Assess the role of ethics in, and the impact of current issues on, the practice of accounting Assess the impact of technology on the accounting functions in business Describe professional accounting designations and career opportunities Evaluation Structure:: Knowledge/Understanding Application Thinking Communication Resources: 30% 30% 25% 15% The above is reflected both in the term work (worth 70% of the final mark) and the summative work (worth 30% of the final mark). Summative work consists of the Final Exam (20%) and an in-class CPT (10%) The course will use a variety of resources including video, Internet and print sources. A textbook will be distributed to students during the first week of the course. The text and all other resources assigned to students are the responsibility of the student. Any damage will result in payment for replacement. Students will be given the option to purchase a workbook to complete homework assignments. ***Efforts will be made to meet the individual learning needs of students in order to ensure these expectations are being me. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the teacher at your earliest convenience. Policies Due dates will be set for assignments and major projects. Please adhere to the deadlines. D’Youville’s late penalty policy will apply for work not handed in on time. Late assignments will not be accepted after they’ve been collected, marked and returned to the class. If a student is absent from class, but present at school on the day an assignment is due, the student is responsible for ensuring the assignment is submitted to the teacher by the end of Period 4. If a student is absent all day on an assignment due date, then the following would be required from the student: 1st time an assignment is missed: Parent note, Medical note hereafter Test/Quiz Dates Students must be present for all test dates. In the case of an illness or personal emergency, the student should expect to write the missed test on the next day of class (either during class time or after school, the teacher will make a decision that day.) If a student knows ahead of time that he/she will be absent for a test, the teacher is to be notified of this immediately.
