NATIONAL WOOL REVIEW
MOUNTAIN AREAS AND WESTERN UNITED STATES DIRECT SHEEP
Receipts: 0
Last Week: 0
Last Year: 7800
Compared to last week: There were no confirmed trades this week. The old crop lambs that
were in the Imperial Valley are mostly all moved back to the feedlots at this point in
time. The majorities of them have been moved and now they are at a final clean up stage
where the remaining numbers will be back within the next ten days to two weeks. CA
springers are look to start moving in early April or later as CA still has a moderate
feed supply from earlier rains, although it has started to heat up and much of the state
is starting to get dry. Most believe that recent rain storms have helped to be able to
hold them back longer and they believe this is very beneficial as feedlot numbers have
risen this past month. Harvest weights are remaining steady in CO and the Mid-west.
Consumer demand is still struggling and packers are continuing to decrease bids. The
Mandatory Price Reporting, Formula Carcass report for last week was showing the average
carcass weight at 80.9 lbs. Corresponding live weight calculation would be 161.2 lbs.
This is indicating that weights have remained steady and are still trending heavy.

Domestic wool trading on a clean basis was at a standstill this week. There were
no confirmed trades. Shearing has become wide spread especially across the
western states. Storms in the early part of the month caused a lot of shearing
to be put on hold while they passed through. The recent warmer weather has now
allowed shearing to begin again. Shearing will continue to be heavy over the
next several weeks, but a majority of the producers say they are at least a week
to two weeks behind their normal schedule. A stronger U.S. dollar along with the
struggles in China is making it hard for buyers to obtain clips that growers are
willing to sell at. Currently wools are falling within 80-85 percent of
Australia. Domestic clean wool and confirmed trades are reported on a weighted
average basis. Prices reflect trades FOB warehouse in original bag or square
pack, bellies out, some graded, and 76 mm or longer. No allowance made for
coring, freight or handling fees at the warehouse level to reflect net grower
prices (*) indicates new prices this week. (NA) represents microns not normally
available in this region. Wools shorter than 75 mm typically discounted .10-.20
clean. Classed and skirted wools usually trade at a .10-.20 premium to original
bag prices.
