CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK
Each year, the Catholic community of
Ontario engages in a week-long celebration of the unique identity and
distinctive contributions of Catholic
education during Catholic Education
Week. This year’s celebration entitled, “Opening Doors of Mercy” is
scheduled for the week of May 1 – May 6, 2016. Catholic
schools are Catholic faith communities. We – parents, students, teachers, administrative and support staff – walk and
grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God,
who at our Baptism, called us by name. But the response
of each of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of
our Catholic community be that of our local parish, our
home, or our Catholic school community. The scriptural
passage that guides our theme is: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.” – Matthew 5:7
Further information regarding Catholic Education Week
will be forthcoming.
PERSONAL TREASURES
A “personal treasure” is any item, regardless of its monetary value, that holds a personal significance to a person.
This might include jewelry, cards, stuffed animals. Parents/Guardians are asked to reinforce with their children
that these items are NOT to be brought to school.
REPORTING HEAD INJURIES
Even when it may appear to be insignificant, we inform parents/guardians of all
reported head injuries at school. When a
student has bumped his/her head you are
called and the child will bring home a concussion information pamphlet. We do this in recognition of the potential danger of any injury involving the head area. Our intent is not to alarm you, but to keep you informed. Please
remind your child to let a staff member know if they bump
their head or if they get hurt at school. Student safety is of
utmost importance to us at St. David of Wales.
CBC (CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK)
All volunteers who come into the school either to help out
in the classroom or to accompany their child on a class trip
MUST have a Criminal Background Check. You just have
to come in to the office to meet with the Principal, Mrs.
Gillis, and receive the forms necessary for a CBC. You
only have to have this done once, then every year you will
receive a form to sign called “Annual Criminal Offence
Declaration” which will be kept on file at the school. It
does not cost anything to get a CBC if you bring in the
Volunteer Form and the Volunteer Authorization Letter
signed by the Principal.
STUDENT INFORMATION
Please remember to update the office wirth any new information regarding your child. The office needs to be advised of
any changes to telephone numbers, emergency contacts or address so that we have all the correct information for your child
in case of an emergency.
LEAVING AT LUNCHTIME
Parents,/Guardians, please be advised that ALL students must
have written permission from a parent/guardian to leave the
school at lunch. Verbal permission ( over the phone) will not
be accepted. A signed and dated note with a parent/guardian
signature is required for each occurrence. The note must come
to the office and students are required to sign out and to sign
back in when they return for afternoon classes.
SAFE SCHOOLS
St. David of Wales is committed to providing a safe, caring and
inclusive school. We continue to encourage positive interactions and a community that welcome and values healthy relationship, high academic standards, respect, gospel values and
virtuous living. Together students, parents and teachers continue to learn how to protect the community from a variety of
forms of bullying while building student self esteem and awareness. We continue to encourage positive and healthy peer-topeer relationships. Youth Education Officers work in partnership with the Dufferin Peel catholic District School Board to
create a positive and safe learning environment within the elementary school system.
RECESS REMINDERS
We at St. David of Wales have a NO CONTACT policy. This
policy states that students are not to play any games or be involved in any activities in the school yard that involve physical
contact. Games such as tackle football, manhunt and like
games are not allowed. If a game develops during the course of
a recess break where contact becomes part of the game or activity, students are reminded to remove themselves from that activity and to report the contact to the nearest staff member on
yard duty. Staff can easily be identified by their bright orange
vests.
ARE YOU MOVING
If you are planning a move or have already moved, please let us know. You
are required to complete a new assessment form even if you move within our
school boundaries. If you are moving to
a new school we will give you a Transfer Form to take with you
to the new school In the past, we have had to reorganize our
classes in September due to unexpected transfers. Please remember we must adhere to the ministry cap of 20 students in
our primary grades.
DRESS CODE
With the approach of the warmer weather, we ask you to review our dress code
with your children. At all times, clothing
should be comfortable, tasteful and appro
-priate to our Catholic school environment.
Clothing must display appropriate and
acceptable words and graphics.
Girls’ tops must have a minimum of 5 cm.
(approximately the width of 3 adult fingers) at the shoulders.
Boys’ tops must have sleeves.
Shorts and skirts must reach the bottom of the students’
fingertips when hands are relaxed to their side.
Specifically not allowed are: Bandanas, str ing tops,
tube tops, halter tops, or anything that exposes bare skin,
midriffs and/or undergarments, skin tight clothing, spandex
shorts and pants, sheer materials (including mesh), cut-offs,
torn or ragged clothing and pants which sag below the
waist. Thank you for your co-operation in helping to instill
the values of common sense, good taste and modesty in our
WATER BOTTLES
Students are permitted to bring full
water bottles to school. However, for
safety reasons they will not be allowed
to refill at the water fountains in the
hallway. Students are permitted to
have them on their desks but are to be
used under the direction of the classroom teacher. We have found in the
past that at times students use these for water fights in
the playground. During recesses students will continue to receive a pass so they can come into the school
for water. Your understanding is much appreciated.
BIKES
As the warmer weather approaches, many students are
choosing to ride their bikes to
school. We do have a bike rack located at the back of the school.
Please keep in mind that students are
not to ride their bikes on school
property, including pathways, and
they do ride their bikes at their own
risk. The school cannot be responsible for any lost or damaged bikes. Students are strongly encouraged to lock their
bikes on the rack and bring their helmets inside the school.
Please remember that skateboards, rollerblades and
“wheelie shoes, are not allowed in the school yard.
VOLUNTEER SOCIAL

join us for Coffee/Tea and desserts on June 15
at 2:00pm. If you are able to join us please call
our school secretary, Mrs. Meo. Invitations to

SCHOOL COUNCIL
Our last Catholic School Council meeting will be held on Wednesday June 1, at t 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. We thank
our very committed Catholic Council members for their on-going
work and support for our students and staff.
LOCKDOWNS AND FIRE DRILLS
For your information we will be rehearsing a number
of emergency response situations including lock-downs
and fire drills. All schools are required by Board policy
to practice these procedures throughout the year. Participation is
essential for precautionary purposes only, so that in the event of an
actual emergency, students will be prepared to respond in a safe and
responsible manner. If you would like additional information, please
feel free to contact the school.
KISS ‘N RIDE
Please note that cars are not to use the bus lane at any time.
Parents/guardians are also asked to use our proper Kiss ’N Ride
lanes and not to pull into the bus lanes.
Parents/guardians please do not leave your car unattended in
the Kiss “N Ride lanes at any point in the school day. If you are
dropping off a lunch for your child please park your car in designated parking spots or on the street. We ask that parents use extra caution when using our Kiss “N Ride lanes in the winter months.
Please drive safely and take your time. Our focus is always to keep
all of our students safe.
Please do not enter the parking lot through the exit. This is very
dangerous and the safety of our students is paramount. We thank
you in advance for your cooperation.
PLEASE NOTE: You cannot exit your vehicle in the Kiss and
Ride. Students must exit the vehicle independently. If your child
cannot exit independently please park in the parking lot.

transported by bus:

DR. SIMONE NEEDS OUR HELP

reminded of how lucky we are to be able to
come to school and have all the supplies and materials to
learn. This week we will be collecting donations of paper,
crayons, pens, pencils, erasers etc. for Dr. Simone’s Canadian
Food Drive these items will be distributed to children in need
all over the World.
WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN
On Thursday May 5th, at 6:30-8:00Welcome
to Kindergarten” (WTK) presentation will be
given to parents/guardians and children who
will be attending Kindergarten in September,
2016. Due to the nature of the activities,
please do not bring siblings. After a
presentation to parents/guardians, the children and parents/guardians participate in a variety of centers. Upon completion of the presentation and centers, each child will receive a
bag filled with wonderful materials i.e. books, paper, play
dough, scissors, letters and numbers. These materials will be
an excellent preparation for the children and their parents/guardians to use to prepare prior to Kindergarten. Welcome to Kindergarten is sponsored by the “Learning Partnership” and is supported by The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District
School Board.
STUDENT ABSENCES/LATES

of late or absent students. The number to call is (905) 8484200 Ext. 1. We must hear from a parent or guardian if a student will be absent or arriving late. If a student is leaving early

EQAO Grade 3 and Grade 6 Testing
The following time span has been designated for the Provincial EQAO testing. We ask that parents of
Grade 3 and 6 students make sure that they mark these dates on their calendar, and we ask that parents do
not book appointments at all during this time span. Students’ attendance during this time period is absolutely essential! The test dates have been scheduled:
June 3, June 6 and June 7, 2016.
EQAO Parent Tips
Stay Positive
· Always celebrate your child’s successes and hard work each day.
· Remind your child that the assessment will have questions asking them things that they have already learned in class.
· Please avoid scheduling appointments during EQAO.
· Be sure your child receives enough sleep every night so that they are rested.
· Continue to ensure that your child eats a healthy full break-fast and remembers to keep a positive and relaxed attitude in the
home environment.
· Do not force your child to study for these tests. They are already working hard at school.
· For additional information on grades 3 and 6 testing visit the EQAO website at www.eqao.com and click on “Parent Resources”.
Something to Remember:
Although EQAO offers important information about your child’s learning, it is only one part of the puzzle. The levels
achieved on EQAO will not be a part of your child’s report card. The results of your child’s EQAO scores will be provided to
each family in the fall.
