A Thanksgiving
Prayer
Loving God, we thank you:
For the peace within our favored land,
For the plenty from Your bounteous
hand,
For the means to give to those in need,
For grace to help in thought and deed,
For faith to walk, our hands in Yours,
For truth to know Your law divine,
For strength to work with voice and
pen,
For love to serve our fellow humans,
For light the goal ahead to see,
For life to use alone for You,
Loving God, we thank you.
Amen
"For I was hungry and you gave me
food, I was thirsty and you gave ye
drink. I was a stranger and you
welcomed me..." - Matthew 25:35
ADMINISTRATORS MESSAGE
It’s hard to believe that the first month of
school is over. Fall seems to be upon us
and nature’s beauty can be found in the
changing colour of the leaves, birds
flying south and of course, some cooler
weather. One constant that we can rely
on is the positive synergy found at
Divine Mercy School.
Divine Mercy School is an active school
that relies on cooperation and teamwork.
We are very blessed to have a very
devoted School Council, student body
and Parish Team. Many activities can be
found throughout the school; whether it
is sports teams, liturgical celebrations, or
curriculum initiatives, school life is
vibrant and alive!
We would like to thank our parents,
students and teachers for making our
Open House a huge success!
The Thanksgiving Food Drive and Terry
Fox Walk were a great success and
serve as part of our commitment to help
those in need. A notable Latin quote
states “Where love and charity are found
– God is present.” We thank you for your
very generous efforts to help others.
We would also like to thank all of the
students, teachers and parents that
joined us for our Opening School Mass
on Tue, October 6, 2015. Father Vid’s
message of hope and love continues to
inspire us to be better people.

TOGETHER IN FAITH
During the month of October we will focus on the virtue of
Empathy.
God has given us the ability to form connections with each
other – to live together. Empathy helps us to connect and
live together in safe, caring, inclusive communities.
An empathetic person…
• listens attentively
• watches people’s body language
• notices and responds when someone is upset
• can name her/his feelings
• can see a situation from another person’s point of view
• knows that different people may feel differently about the
same thing
Let us pray this month, for the grace and strength to be
people of empathy – people who can identify with and feel
the concerns of those around us.
We want to thank you for supporting our efforts at home in
reinforcing with our children the 10 virtues which can be
found in your child’s agenda.
Please join us for our Virtue Assembly on Empathy on
Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 1:00 pm in our school
gym. We would like to thank Mrs. Thomas and Mrs.
Symonds and their classes.
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board includes
the teaching of religion, family life, the practice of prayer
and worship, and the presence of Gospel values in the
curriculum and daily life in the schools. Schools have
strong links to parishes and assist parishes with
sacramental preparation. Parish staff conduct liturgies and
provide other services within the schools. The Catholic
School system maintains strong links between the home,
school and church, and parental participation in the
education of students is highly encouraged. These links
provide natural reinforcement and development of
Christian values in the Catholic Tradition. (Taken from Our
Story, Our Tradition, Our Journey)

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE
We thank everyone for contributing so generously to our
Thanksgiving Food Drive. The food will be donated to the
Eden Community Food Bank on Thursday, October 15,
2015. Thank you Mr. Demelo’s class for organizing the

all that you give.
ATTENDANCE
Our attendance line is: 905-812-5445 (Press #1). Please
call to register an absence. You can call 24hrs a day
including weekends if you know your child will be
absent from school. An answering machine is available
to take information.
Please provide the following information:
• Name(s) of student(s)
• Name of student’s teacher(s)
• Grade of student(s)
• Reason for absence
If an absence is not reported, our policy is to call home to
verify student absenteeism. A parent or guardian must
sign out students at the office who leave early.
All students are expected to attend school regularly and
punctually. All students who arrive after 8:30 a.m. or 12:30
p.m. must obtain a late slip from the office. This measure
is to ensure the safety of your child. We thank you for your
continued support in following this procedure.
CUSTODY OF CHILDREN
On rare occasions, we are faced with difficult situations in
which non-custodial parents arrive at school asking to visit
their child or to take their child home after school. We are
best able to serve and protect students when we are made
aware of legal custody arrangements, visitation rights, and
other special instructions. If legal custody matters affect
your family, please ensure that our office and classroom
teachers are aware of custodial arrangements between
parents that may affect your child during school hours.
Please ensure that a copy of the Court Order is on file at
the school office.
PROGRESS REPORT
The Progress Report Card will be sent home on November
17, 2015. This report shows a student’s development of
the learning skills and work habits, and general progress in
working towards the achievement of the curriculum. Two
elementary Provincial Report Cards will be issued later in
the school year, one in February for Term One, and
another in June for Term Two.
DIVINE MERCY SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE
Thank you to all the members of the Divine Mercy School
Community for attending our Open House on September
24, 2015. It was a great success with parents and staff
conversing in classrooms and throughout the school. The
evening proved to be an excellent opportunity for the
community and the school to make some positive
connections.
We wish to express our sincere thanks to the School
Council for organizing and sponsoring our Open House.
We look forward to continued opportunities to meet with
you again!
DIVINE MERCY SCHOOL MASS
Our Thanksgiving and Opening School Mass was held on
October 6th, 2015 at Merciful Redeemer. The students
were all engaged in Father Vid’s homily. We would like to
thank Father Vid for his words of wisdom that he shared
with our students and parents. We would like to thank the
parents who were able to volunteer by walking to mass,
and the parents that attended our school mass. Thank
you to the Liturgical Committee for organizing the mass,
and to our Divine Mercy Choir for their inspiring musical
talents.
PICTURE DAY
Our picture re-take day is on October 27, 2015 for those
students who were absent on picture day.
P.E.D.s (PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES)
Personal Electronic Devices on Board Premises
and/or Board Sanctioned Events for Educational
Purposes:
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board
acknowledges the value of the use of technology for
learning. Students will be permitted to register and use
personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises
and/or board sanctioned events for educational purposes,
under the direction of staff and only with parent/guardian
permission. Students may register their PED for the
purpose of connecting to the board wireless network.
Students will be required to adhere to the student
“Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network
Student Agreement” (GF 337) and the “Network User
Application and Agreement.” (GF066) Please be advised
that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board
will not be responsible for any cost incurred through
the use of personal data plans. The GF337 form will be
sent home shortly.
PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere
with learning; their use must comply with the Catholic
Code of Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any
personal communications (i.e., phone calls, text
messages, etc.) will continue to be directed through
the main office. Failure to comply with these guidelines
may result in a loss of PED privileges and/or any other
consequences
deemed
necessary
by
school
administration.
The school principal may authorize limited acceptable
uses of personal electronic devices during schoolsanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose
outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas.
Students are responsible for the safety and security of
PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no
responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices.

Next School Council Meeting
Tuesday, November 10, 2015 @ 6:30 PM
All Divine Mercy School Parents
are invited to join us.
YOUTH FAITH AMBASSADORS
This initiative encourages Catholic elementary school
students in grades 5- 8 to live out our baptismal call to
become Fully Alive in the Lord Jesus Christ through care
for themselves and others. The Role of the Youth Faith
Ambassador is to become active Christians through the
Knowledge of God’s word, increasing their own faith
development and improving their communities through
service. Several students from these grades volunteered
to represent their school under the leadership of Mrs.
Commisso and Mme. Cenedese. The students will share
their experience as ambassadors and will discuss and
create opportunities for becoming active witnesses in our
school and community.
ALLERGIES
We would like to inform you that Divine Mercy School is an
allergen aware school. We have a number of students in
our school who have severe allergic life threatening
reactions to peanuts, peanut butter, peanut oils, any
peanut/nut by-products, sesame, tree nut, seafood and
dairy products. As in the past, we are asking you to not put
any child at risk, therefore, are requesting that PEANUTS,
PEANUT BUTTER, PEANUT OILS, ANY PEANUT/NUT
BY-PRODUCTS NOT BE BROUGHT INTO THE
SCHOOL. A letter was sent home the first day of school
which addressed this issue for each particular class. We
are asking parents not to send food items to school
when celebrating your child’s birthday since there are
many alternatives such as pencils, stickers, etc.
PICTURE TAKING
From time to time we take pictures of school events. If you
do not want your child’s picture taken, please ensure you
let your child’s teacher know in writing.
Picture taking is not permitted by the public or media
without signed parental consent.
Please be aware that no pictures of students are posted by
the school on the internet or the school website.
USE OF SCHOOL PHONES
Students will only be permitted to use
the school phone in cases of emergency.
An emergency is considered to be an illness
or injury. Calling home because it is raining,
or for forgotten shoes, wanting to go to a friend’s house or
other minor issues, are not considered emergencies.
BUSSING and COURTESY SEAT POLICY
STOPR (Student Transportation of Peel Region)
Stopr is providing bus transportation services for the
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. The STOPR
website address is www.stopr.ca. This website provides
access to up to date information regarding delayed buses
and bus cancellations due to inclement weather. To check
for eligibility for transportation, please access the following
website: businfo.stopr.ca.
STOPR Telephone Contact Information:
905-890-6000
Thank you to all parents who completed and followed the
school board process for the Courtesy Seat Bus Request.
We are in the process of trying to accommodate as many
students as possible for this year. Please remember that
this process must be conducted annually for students not
normally eligible to ride the bus.
BUS PATROLLERS
We would like to thank our bus patrollers who were trained
at Peel Safety Village on September 29, 2015. Our bus
patrollers will work to ensure students follow the bus safety
guidelines. A special thanks to Mrs. Casciaro for her
leadership with the Divine Mercy bus patrollers.
MOVING?
If you are planning to move out of the
Divine Mercy school area or change
address within our boundaries, please
let the office know as soon as
possible.
Please keep us informed of any address, phone number or
medical changes for your children. It is of the utmost
importance that our records be up to date. If your child
should get sick or hurt, we must have accurate contact
information.
REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS
Interested in volunteering at Divine
Mercy School for 2015/2016? During the
school
year,
volunteers
support
programs and activities at the school.
We appreciate and rely on parents who
can devote a small portion of their time
to help. You may pick up a volunteer form and a
Criminal Reference Check Form at the school office.
People who volunteer in schools and attend trips are
required to have completed Criminal Reference Checks,
which can be picked up from our school office and taken to
Police Headquarters listed on the form. Once the form is
completed, your volunteer service can begin. We look
forward to working with you for the betterment of all
students at Divine Mercy School.
All STAR READING PROGRAM
Mrs. Dunn continues to seek parent volunteers to assist
with the All Star Reading Program. All Star Reading is an
exciting component of our literacy program where reading
coaches are matched with primary students to spend 2-3
sessions per week tutoring. The purpose of this program is
to encourage our young students to become more selfdirected and take responsibility for constructive reading
strategies that work for them. Parent volunteers are
needed to come into school on a regular basis for a
minimum of one hour per week. If you are interested in
being a parent volunteer, please contact Mrs. Dunn at the
school. Mrs. Dunn will give you more information about the
All Star Reading Program and how to get a Volunteer
Criminal Reference Check.
STORAGE/ADMINISTRATION OF
MEDICATION
Parents are responsible for ensuring that all medication
and forms are updated annually. If your child requires
medication, please have all pertinent forms completed and
returned with the medication to the office as soon as
possible.
NO CHILD WITHOUT MEDIC ALERT PROGRAM
The No Child Without program offers a free MedicAlert
membership to students who attend our school and are
between the ages of 4 to 14. If your child has a medical
condition, allergy, or is required to take medication on a
regular basis, then you should consider a MedicAlert
membership through this program. For further information
pick up a brochure at the school office, or visit
www.nochildwithout.ca. If your child is already part of the
program but his/her medical condition or contact
information has changed, call 1-866-479-3220 Ext.1.
AFTER HOURS SCHOOL ACCESS
When school closes at 3:00 p.m students
should be leaving with all the homework and
books that they may need for the evening.
We strongly encourage students to do this.
If they do need to return to the school for forgotten
homework, they have until 4:00 p.m. to do so. They are to
come back with their parent, other family member, or
guardian and report to the school office. If the office is
closed they are to look for the Custodian working on the
first floor of the school who will assist them.
KISS AND RIDE PROGRAM AND
PLAYGROUND SUPERVISION
The “Kiss and Ride” program takes place before school
and after school. Please be reminded that safety must be
the primary concern for all trying to drive into the school
lot. Duncairn Drive becomes a very busy place in the
mornings and after school. For the safety of all, we ask for
patience. A reminder to the Divine Mercy community that
our driveway is a one-way.
Parents wishing to drop off
children at school must enter from the west driveway
only and exit from the east driveway only.
We have reserved for cars that drop and pick up students
an area by the side of the school next to the kindergarten
play area. We ask that when you enter the school’s
parking area you follow the yellow arrows on the asphalt.
These arrows will lead you through the parking area to the
Kiss and Ride drop off. The arrow lane is a drive through
while the lane beside the asphalt is the drop off lane.
Please then follow the arrow signs on the ground to exit.
You enter on the west side of the building by the park and
exit on the east side by the homes.
Kiss and Ride is just like the one at the Go Station. You
stop, let your child out and then drive away. Please DO
NOT leave your car in the Kiss and Ride. THERE IS NO
STOPPING IN THE DRIVE THROUGH LANE (the lane
with the arrows). The area beside the kindergarten area is
the only area where students are let off and picked up in
the school area.
If you wish to walk your child into school, we ask that you
either park on Duncairn in front of the school (this will be a
limited time parking zone) or in the designated parking lot.
When walking your child into the school, please use either
the sidewalk on the east side and walk them to the asphalt
at the back of the school or the crosswalk on the driveway
at the west side and walk them past the kindergarten area
to the asphalt at the back.
We do need volunteers to help us run the program so if
you have some time before and after school please
consider volunteering. If you are able to volunteer,
please let the office know.
We would also like to remind parents that schoolyard
supervision does not begin until 8:15 am. Students
should not be arriving before this time, as the
playground is not supervised.
Parents are not
permitted on the supervised yard during school hours.
Thank you for keeping our students safe.
LOST AND FOUND
We often find lost items at Divine Mercy School. Items like
shoes, socks, hats, jackets, gloves etc. are collected and
placed in the ‘lost and found’ box. Please look through it to
see if any items belong to you. At various points in the
year, and after several reminders to students, the items
will be donated to charity.
TERRY FOX DAY WALK
On September 30, 2015 students and staff had the
opportunity to remember Terry Fox and his courageous
fight against cancer. We raised $4788.00. All funds will be
donated to the Terry Fox Cancer Foundation. Thanks to
Mrs. Van der Ster, Ms Costanzo, Ms Drake and Ms.
Mezgec for organizing the event and to all the students,
staff and community members who supported the run.
PEDICULOSIS
Although it is early in the school year, it is important to
bring to your attention the problem which occurs at some
time in most schools at least once every year. Head lice
are parasites which have been common among human
beings for centuries. They are not connected in any way
with dirt or neglect. If a case is found in our schools, we
shall inform parents of the students in that classroom. We
will be checking friends and other siblings. We ask that
you also check your own children regularly. If you find
them to be infested, please notify the office. Please check
the Region of Peel website for more information on
Pediculosis.
http://www.peelregion.ca/health/shp/2008/shrgtopics/head_lice/index.htm
You’ll save money: Depending on gas prices, you can
expect to save over $60 per year just by turning off your
engine. Idling a vehicle for 10 minutes a day uses up more
than 100 litres of gasoline in a year.
You’ll breathe easier: By turning your engine off, you and
others around you won’t have to breathe in unhealthy
exhaust fumes from a vehicle that is going nowhere.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
OCTOBER IS WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH
TURN YOUR ENGINE OFF
Ten seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting
your engine!
You can reduce air pollution and care for the air we
breathe by turning off your engine when your vehicle is
parked.
Each and every school within Dufferin-Peel Catholic
District School Board is required to have a fire emergency
and evacuation plan. We are required under Board Policy
to have three practice “Fire Drills” during the first term. The
classroom teachers have and will continue to review these
procedures with their students. We are also required to
review “Hold and Secure”, “Shelter in Place” and practice
“Lockdown” procedures. This procedure is to prepare
students in case the police direct us to have a ‘lockdown’.
We will continue practicing these drills throughout the
school year. Teachers will be assuring their children that
this is strictly a practice. Please be assured that we always
have the safety of our children as our first concern.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION PLAN
Tired of making lunches, but still want your child to
receive a fresh, nutritious, delicious, and affordable homestyle meal? Take a break from packing lunch by ordering
Kidssentials. For more information about Kidssentials
meals and any allergy related inquiries please contact
Kidssentials directly. 905.855.1914 /
mail@kidssentials.com / www.kidssentials.com
In the unforeseen event that we should have an
emergency at our school, we will evacuate to:
Our Lady of Mercy School
5820 Glen Erin Drive
(905) 814-9216
Safety regulations and Board Policy require us to have this
contingency plan in place. In the event of an evacuation to
the high school, your child will remain at Our Lady of
Mercy until we are able to contact you and make
arrangements for pick up.
PIZZA DAYS
We began our Pizza Tuesday. Students have been
participating weekly in a fabulous Pizza lunch, by Pizza
Pizza. There will be 20 pizza lunches taking us from
September 22, 2015 to February 16, 2016. The dates are
as follows:
October 6, 13, 20, 27
November 3, 10, 17, 24
December 1, 8, 15
January 5, 12, 19, 26
February 2, 9, 16
We would like to thank all of the parent volunteers and the
Divine Mercy School Council Pizza Committee for their
hard work and dedication.
HEALTHY EATING AND ECOSCHOOLS
Our Divine Mercy Green Team has been working hard to
keep our Silver Status! There are many ways our students
and families can help with our initiatives. Regular use of
recyclable containers for lunch and snacks, and reusable
water bottles that can be refilled at school are some ways
to be green! Boomerang lunches, taking home waste
(banana peels, apple cores) reduce our school waste.
We are going Waste-Free for the week of Oct 21-25th,
2015. This means we try to take home as much of the
leftovers and wrappers as possible. Stay tuned for more
information to come from the Divine Mercy Green Team
WORLD TEACHER’S DAY

Pupil Accommodation Review Policy Public

The Ministry of Education released the new Pupil
Accommodation Review Guideline (PARG) in March 2015.
This guideline sets expectations for all school boards on
managing and reviewing underutilized school space,
including potential school closures, and for the greater
coordination and sharing of planning related information
between school boards and other community partners.
The guideline requires all school boards in the province to
develop or revise Pupil Accommodation Review Policies
and to invite public input into the policy before it is
finalized.
