There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week. Monday, May 2- Mercy That Welcomes Tuesday, May 3 - Mercy That Loves Wednesday, May 4 - Mercy That Forgives – Crowning of Mary AM in the gym Thursday, May 5- Mercy That Lives the Gospel – Loretta Penny Presentation, Welcome to Kindergarten 6:30pm at Divine Mercy Friday, May 6 - Mercy That Rejoices MOTHER’S DAY Mother's Day is a time of commemoration and celebration for Mom. It is a time of breakfast in bed, family gatherings and crayon scribbled "I Love You’s”. It is a time for a special dinner, some flowers, a visit or a phone call. We at Divine Mercy Catholic Elementary School wish all of our Mother’s a most restful and enjoyable Mother’s Day. ADMINISTRATORS’ MESSAGE It has been a customary practice for Catholics to pay special tribute to the Blessed Virgin Mary during the month of May. From all eternity, God knew that Mary would be the Mother of His Son. Since she was to be the Mother of Him who is God, in view of the redemption that Her Son would bring through His death and resurrection, God filled her with the fullness of His grace. She alone, of all human beings was born free from original sin. Mary listened to the call from God and did what was asked of her. She truly was the handmaiden of the Lord. At her death she was taken body and soul to heaven. She is the first person to share in the resurrection of Christ. This privilege is called the “Assumption.” During the month of May, spend some time talking to your children about our Blessed Mother. Pray the rosary together as a family. Saints have acclaimed its effectiveness and Popes have recognized it as a rich source of divine blessing. We honoured Mother Mary at our school on Wednesday, May 4th , 2016 at our Crowning of Mary Celebration. We would like to thank Mrs. Commisso and Mme. Cenedese for all of their hard work and dedication to making this liturgy special and reflective. A very special thank you to the Rosary Apostolate group from Merciful Redeemer. We would also like to say Happy Mother’s Day to all of our special mothers, grandmothers and aunts in the Divine Mercy Community. We wish you a day filled with love, happiness and family. May God continue to bless all of our mothers. We ask that you please review this month’s newsletter as we have again included important information about class placements for September 2016. Please keep in mind that due to our continued decline in enrolment and Ministry mandates, we are limited in our placement options and the number of combined classes. If you are moving out of the area, please let the classroom teacher know immediately because we will soon be in the process of planning our classes for the following school year. We would like to thank all of the parents and family members that came to Divine Mercy Catholic School during Catholic Education Week. Happy Mother’s Day, L. Calabrese Principal S. Please do not leave your children unattended in the school grounds before the teachers begin their duty. At 8:15, we would ask all parents to leave the pavement area for the safety of all the children. ATTENDANCE Our attendance line is: 905-812-5445 (Press #1). Please call to register an absence or late arrival. You can call 24hrs a day including weekends if you know your child will be absent from school. An answering machine is available to take information. Please provide the following information: • Name(s) of student(s) • Name of student’s teacher(s) • Grade of student(s) • Reason for absence If an absence is not reported, our policy is to call home to verify student absenteeism. A parent or guardian must sign out students at the office who leave early. All students are expected to attend school regularly and punctually. There has been an increase of students coming to school after 8:30am. This is particularly disruptive to the school, the class, and the individual child who is late. It is most difficult for a child to be fully engaged in a lesson when the lesson has already begun without them. All students who arrive after 8:30am or 12:30pm must obtain a late slip from the office. This measure is to ensure the safety of your child. We thank you for your continued support in following this procedure. THE VIRTUE OF THE MONTH • avoids judging or stereotyping others • understands that there may be more than one way to do things • sticks up for the “underdog” Let us pray this month for the grace and courage to be people of acceptance – to have the strength to trust that God is at work in everyone’s life despite any misgivings we may have. Merciful Redeemer Parish Youth Ministry News! For all events and full schedule, please visit our website: http://mercifulredeemeryouth.blogspot.ca/ WALK FOR SICK KIDS During the month of May we will focus on the virtue of Acceptance. One of the great wonders of the world we live in is that no two people are exactly alike. We may share biological families or national identity or cultural and ethnic identity, but we are all very unique and distinct creations. God breaks the mold every time! And that is a fantastic fact of life! It can also be a challenging fact of life if it makes us afraid. Sometimes differences are scary – especially if we haven’t learned about or don’t understand how people are different. The virtue of acceptance describes our ability to look at the attitudes and actions of those around us and then just stop and consider without judging them. The virtue of acceptance means that we look beyond what we see – a person’s skin colour, ethnic background, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation and see a person created and loved by God. As a loving Father, God teaches us to treat each other with dignity and respect. This is the way we build God’s kingdom here on earth. An accepting person … • is friendly and open to all God’s people, regardless of age, beliefs, gender, culture or ability • sees positive traits in others even when disagreeing with them Students at Divine Mercy participated in our Walk for Sick Kids Pediatric Leukemia Research on Tuesday, May 3, 2016. The walk began at 9:30, and parents and students were encouraged to Walk for Kids Who Can’t. Divine Mercy raised approximately $800.00 for Sick Kids. Thank you! WELCOME TO INFORMATION EVENING KINDERGARTEN All parents who registered their child for FULL DAY Junior Kindergarten for September 2016 were invited to attend (with their child) a “Welcome to Kindergarten” information evening at Divine Mercy School on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at 6:30 pm. The children had an opportunity to experience some worthwhile activities and to take home a bag of useful supplies to practice these activities. Thank you to all of the parents and teachers that made this evening a wonderful experience for our September Kindergarten students. CROWNING OF MARY On Wednesday, May 4, 2016 of Catholic Education Week, the Rosary Apostolate from Merciful Redeemer Parish along with our the grade 3, 4 and 5 students in Ms. Hedjes, Ms. Silvestri and Mme. Ballard’s classes presented the Crowning of Mary. Divine Mercy students were given the opportunity to include prayer intentions in a prayer box that was placed on our altar during Catholic Education Week. The intentions were then prayed for as a Catholic community at the Crowning of Mary Liturgy. Thank you to Father Vid, the Rosary Apostolate, the Youth Faith Ambassadors, Mme. Cenedese and Mrs. Commisso for all of their effort this year gathering us at our monthly Community Prayers, organizing the Rosary Apostolate visits to each class, and then concluding the year with the Crowning of Mary. MISSISSAUGA NORTH SHINING STARS On Friday, May 6, 2016, students from our school will participate in the Mississauga North Shining Stars gathering at Gonzaga S.S. GRADE 3 and GRADE 6 EQAO All Grades 3 and 6 students in Ontario will again be participating in the Education Quality and Accountability Office Provincial Assessments scheduled to take place between May 25, 2016 and June 8, 2016. The grade 6’s will be writing the tests the week of May 25, 2016. The grade 3’s will be writing the tests the week of May 30th, 2016. We ask that parents work family vacations, appointments and other interruptions around these scheduled dates to maximize their child’s potential during the assessment. More information will be forthcoming. CUSTODY OF CHILDREN On rare occasions, we are faced with difficult situations in which non-custodial parents arrive at school asking to visit their child or to take their child home after school. We are best able to serve and protect students when we are made aware of legal custody arrangements, visitation rights, and other special instructions. If legal custody matters affect your family, please ensure that our office and classroom teachers are aware of custodial arrangements between parents that may affect your child during school hours. Please ensure that a copy of the Court Order is on file at the school office. EXTRA-CURRICULAR EXCURSIONS ACTIVITIES AND Students will have the opportunity to take field trips and participate in a number of extra-curricular activities. Permission forms will be sent home to be filled out, signed and promptly returned to school. NO STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE ON A TRIP OR EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITY WITHOUT WRITTEN CONSENT FROM THEIR PARENT /GUARDIAN. VERBAL CONSENT OVER THE TELEPHONE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. No exceptions will be allowed. Teachers give ample notice for trip consent forms. We encourage parents to support these educational opportunities by volunteering to assist and supervise these excursions. For the safety of your child, excursions lacking appropriate adult supervision will be cancelled. SCHOOL SPORTS / CLUBS BASKETBALL The Intermediate Boys and Girls Basketball Teams had an incredible basketball season this year. The teams worked very hard this season, attending early morning practices and giving up many lunches. The girls made it to the family tournament at Gonzaga showing great Divine Mercy Dragon Spirit. Thank you to our coaches Mme. Ballard, Mlle. Parsons, Mr. Lonardi and Mr. Tomas HEADS UP COMPETITON Divine Mercy’s junior and intermediate Heads-Up teams represented our school very well at this year’s competition at St. Edith Stein. Thank you to Mrs. Mezgec and Ms. Silvestri for preparing our teams who were strong competitors at the tournament. ECO CLUB Thank you to the Recycle team at Divine Mercy who devotes their afternoon recesses to sort all of the recycle. The collected recycling is then converted into new products, ranging from recycled park benches to upcycled backpacks. This is just one way we, at Divine Mercy, are helping to divert waste from landfills from the waste we collect at the school. Great work Mrs. van der Ster, Mrs. Commisso and Mr. Azevedo! LITTERLESS LUNCHES who have severe allergic life threatening reactions to peanuts, peanut butter, peanut oils, any peanut/nut by-products, and dairy products. As in the past, we are asking you to not put any child at risk, therefore, are requesting that PEANUTS, PEANUT BUTTER, PEANUT OILS, ANY PEANUT/NUT BYPRODUCTS NOT BE BROUGHT INTO THE SCHOOL. WE ASK THAT YOU READ THE LABELS OF ALL FOOD ITEMS SENT TO SCHOOL. A letter was sent home the first day of school which addressed this issue for each particular class. We are asking parents not to send food items to school when celebrating your child’s birthday since there are many alternatives such as pencils, stickers, etc. STORAGE / MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION OF Parents are responsible for ensuring that all medication and forms are updated annually. If your child requires medication, please have all pertinent forms completed and returned with the medication to the office as soon as possible. BUSSING We are also encouraging our students to pack a “Litterless Lunch” and to try to use refillable water bottles. HEALTHY EATING AND ECOSCHOOLS At Divine Mercy School, we are promoting Healthy Eating throughout the school year by encouraging our students to bring in healthy snacks and lunches. Students are encouraged to participate in activities in their classrooms and projects that encourage healthy eating. STOPR Telephone Contact Information: 905-890-6000 SCHOOL BUS SAFETY RULES ALLERGIES We would like to inform you that Divine Mercy School is an allergen aware school. We have a number of students in our school The conduct of individual students on the bus directly affects the safety of all the students on the bus. The driver’s attention needs to be on the road. If students are misbehaving, this can distract the driver. We are requesting that all parents/guardians reinforce the School Bus Safety Rules with their child (ren). All Students Should: Be at the bus stop 5-10 minutes prior to their stop time. Never play close to the road. Be ready to board the bus by waiting in an orderly line. Board the bus in single file, use the handrail and sit down in their seat as quickly as possible. Listen to the bus driver. Always remain seated while the bus is moving. Do not throw anything around the bus or out of the window. Keep the aisles clear of all objects (back packs, lunches, books etc.) Do not shout or cause any other unnecessary noises. Be especially quiet at railway crossings. Never put any part of your body out an open window. Be sure to look all ways before crossing the road. Do not damage the bus in any way. Do not throw garbage on the floor. Do not consume any food or drink on the bus. If students fail to follow the bus safety rules, the following actions will be taken. First Offence – child is warned by administration with a phone call home Second Offence – parents will be notified in writing and/or a telephone call. Third Offence – student may lose bus privilege. People who volunteer in schools and attend trips are required to have completed Criminal Reference Checks, which can be picked up from our school office and taken to Police Headquarters listed on the form. Once the form is completed, your volunteer service can begin. We look forward to working with you for the betterment of all students at Divine Mercy School. AFTER HOURS SCHOOL ACCESS When school closes at 3:00pm students should be leaving with all the homework and books that they may need for the evening. We strongly encourage students to do this. MOVING? If you are planning to move out of the Divine Mercy school area or change address within our boundaries, please let the office know as soon as possible. Please keep us informed of any address, phone number or medical changes for your children. It is of the utmost importance that our records be up to date. If your child should get sick or hurt, we must have accurate contact information. LOST AND FOUND SAFETY FIRST WHEN DROPPING STUDENTS OFF AT SCHOOL The safety of all children and staff must be considered as paramount at all times when dropping students off at school. The number of serious incidents related to traffic circulation at the front of the school and in the Kiss and Ride area during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal has risen. These incidents include vehicles entering the site in the wrong direction, parking and pulling out of no parking zones, parking in bus lanes, to name a few. It is imperative that all parents and guardians who drive their children to school adhere to the traffic circulation plan and comply with the traffic and parking signage on the site. It is equally imperative that all drivers follow the direction of staff managing the traffic circulation on the school site. Thank you for your consideration and co-operation with this important matter. REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS Interested in volunteering at Divine Mercy School for 2016? During the school year, volunteers support programs and activities at the school. We appreciate and rely on parents who can devote a small portion of their time to help. You may pick up a volunteer form and a Criminal Reference Check Form at the school office. We often find lost items at Divine Mercy School. Items like shoes, socks, hats, jackets, gloves etc. are collected and placed in the ‘lost and found’ box. Please look through it to see if any items belong to you. At the end of the school year, all remaining items will be donated to charity. PEDICULOSIS Head Lice is a common problem which occurs at some time in most schools. Head lice are parasites which have been common among human beings for centuries. They are not connected in any way with dirt or neglect. If a case is found in our schools, we shall inform parents of the students in that classroom with a letter. We have had a number of cases so we ask that you also check your own children regularly. If you find them to be infested, please notify the office. For more information go to the following link: http://www.peelregion.ca/health/topics/headlice/. When determining placement, some of the criteria we consider are: academic ability, individual work habits, study skills, maturity, and date of birth, social factors, student needs and gender. Due to our size, we are limited in our placement options and the number of combined classes. We appreciate your input concerning any special needs your child (ren) may have. With this in mind, we ask that if you have feedback for us, please provide it to us in writing. We ask that you submit your feedback to the principal by Thursday, May 5, 2016. Parents are asked to include the child’s strengths, needs and a description of their learning style and any other intangibles that you feel are pertinent, including the type of learning environment that your child would experience the most success. Please do not make specific requests for teachers as teaching assignments are tentative and may change between now and September. When we meet to consider your input and the input of the teachers, a decision can then be made on accommodating any parental feedback. It is not always possible, given the variables that go into devising a class, to accommodate all parental requests. Hence, we ask for your understanding and flexibility. Please rest assured that our decisions are made only after careful deliberation and consideration of all the facts for the individual good of the child and the common good of the school community. The hard cap of 20 students per primary class is out of our control. All primary classes at Divine Mercy School cannot exceed 20 students. The School Board’s Planning Department must take direction from the Ministry of Education who has the final say as to the number of students in the class and the configuration of these classes. This decision will have an affect across our school when configuring the makeup of our classes, as will be the case in all schools in the province. Please note we continue to decline in enrolment and as such, combined classes at Divine Mercy School may continue to be a reality for the upcoming school year. Until we finalize our enrolment in September, all class arrangements are tentative. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me anytime. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding. SUMMER SCHOOL FOR GRADE 7 AND 8 STUDENTS Summer School for Grade 7 and 8 students for Literacy and Mathematics will take place in the month of July, specifically, July 4 – July 22, 2016, between the hours of 8:30 am - 12:30 pm. Classes this year will take place at St. Faustina Catholic Elementary School. More information can be obtained from your child’s classroom teacher or on the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board website at http://www.dpcdsb.org/CEC/CNE/ NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY: Forest of Reading Book Clubs: The Forest of Reading has been very successful again this year at Divine Mercy School with many students enjoying new books by Canadian authors. Students from FDK to Grade 8 have had the opportunity to participate in this Ontario Library Association Reading Program through the school library and to vote for their favourite book. This year the school library hosted several book clubs. The Primary students (FDK-3) enjoyed reading the Blue Spruce books during their library classes. For the grades 1-3 French Immersion students we had “Le Prix Peuplier” read to the students by their classroom teachers. The Silver Birch Express (Grades 3-4), Silver Birch Fiction and Non-Fiction (grades 5-6) and the Red Maple book clubs (grades 7-8) brought together several students to the library during lunch and afternoon recesses. This year we also had “Le Prix Tamarac Express” introduced to the French Immersion students for the students in grades 3 and 4. All participants who had read at least 5 books had the opportunity to place their votes. These votes have all been sent to the Ontario Library Association. Province wide results will be announced in May. For more information about the Forest of Reading program visit www.accessola.com. Returning Library Books: We are approaching that time of year again when all of the library books should be returned to the school library. Overdue notices and letters have been going home with the students. The expectation is that lost books are paid for. Any books that are outstanding in a student’s account will stay on their record until the book has been located or paid for. Please help your to child locate any lost or misplaced library books in a timely manner. YEAR END SCHOOL MASS HEAT STRESS The staff and students of Divine Mercy School will be celebrating our year end School Mass on Friday, June 17, 2016 at 9:30am at Merciful Redeemer Parish. If you are available, please meet us at Merciful Redeemer Parish. We will be walking to the church weather permitting. This mass will be in honour of our volunteers. As the summer approaches and the thermometer goes up, our thoughts turn to fun in the sun, our gardens, sports and other outdoor activities. However, too much heavy work or play during hot weather can lead to disorders such as heat stroke. Use the following tips to stay healthy when working and playing during hot weather: WEATHER DRESS CODE As the weather gets progressively warmer (we hope) we remind students to dress appropriately. We would like our students to be neat, clean and comfortable for learning. Students are expected to dress in a manner and attire suitable for the occasion and appropriate to the school environment. Boys must wear full length t-shirts with sleeves (no muscle shirts or cut off t-shirts are allowed for regular classes or gym wear). Girls are not to wear anything strapless, spaghetti straps or have bare midriffs. Shorts are allowed provided they are modest. No short shorts or cut-off jeans will be allowed. If students do not adhere to these guidelines, parents will be called and requested to provide suitable attire. Also, please be aware of the reports given on TV and radio regarding the harmful effects of the UV rays from the sun. Remember to dress your children appropriately to ensure protection. Make sure that they put on sun block, wear a hat, sunglasses and wear light coloured clothing! School guidelines are: 1. 2. 3. 4. The top of the pants must meet the bottom of the shirt with no exposure of midriff or undergarments at anytime, even if the wearer is reaching up. Students should not wear short-shorts, tight spandex biking shorts or cutoffs. Tank tops, halter tops, spaghetti strap tops, muscle shirts, mesh shirts or any other clothing which leaves the wearer with a bare shoulder, a bare back or a bare middle may not be worn. Clothing with suggestive, offensive and/or inappropriate slogans or pictures, particularly those of a sexual, racial or violent nature on t-shirts, hats or sweatshirts are not acceptable. We ask for your continued support for a dress code that reflects a Catholic School as a place for serious work, accompanied by standards of sensitivity, politeness and decorum. Thank you in advance for your continued support and cooperation. Drink cool water. Anyone in a hot environment should drink cool water in small amounts frequently-one cup every 20 minutes. Avoid alcohol, coffee, tea and caffeinated soft drinks, which cause dehydration. Dress appropriately. Wear lightweight, light-colored, loosefitting clothing and change clothing if it gets completely saturated. Use sunscreen and wear a hat when working outdoors. Avoid getting sunburn. Work/play in ventilated areas. Good airflow increases evaporation of sweat, which cools the skin. Know the signs and take prompt action. Get emergency medical attention immediately if someone has one or more of the following symptoms: mental confusion or loss of consciousness, flushed face, hot, dry skin or has stopped sweating. FIRE DRILL PROCEDURES AND LOCKDOWN Throughout the year school personnel reviews safety procedures with students on a number of topics. Emergency evacuation drills are conducted to ensure that everyone is aware of the procedures to follow in order to exit the building safely. In the event of an unforeseen emergency situation students and staff will evacuate to Our Lady of Mercy School. On Tuesday May 24th, 2016 students and staff will discuss and practice procedures that will be implemented in the event of an emergency lockdown situation. Should a high risk incident involving weapons occur in the school or near the school that could endanger the lives or the safety of students and staff at the school, the emergency lockdown or hold and secure procedures will be initiated. GRADUATION MASS The Grade 8 Graduation Mass and Ceremony will be held at Merciful Redeemer Parish on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 5:00pm.
