Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God." Can you hear him? He calls out to us from his place in the wilderness to our place of wilderness, the world. He calls to us with a voice that is filled with the knowledge of hope in the coming of Emmanuel who will dwell with us. He calls out to us to prepare in ways with which we may not be familiar, and calls us to take action with which we may not be very comfortable. John‟s mission on the earth was (is) to be the voice calling people to be ready to receive the King of Kings and he fulfilled his purpose in total obedience and humility. His purpose from conception was to be the herald of the King, announcing His arrival, so that all people would be ready upon his arrival to bow down and worship the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Our lives can be a wilderness, so full of worldly cares, that we are unable to hear that voice, “Repent”. Our lives can take us on many paths that are not taking us to the manger in Bethlehem. These paths are not smooth but are uneven and cause us to stumble and fall (sin), possibly causing us to give up on our journey because the path is too difficult to follow. Can we exchange our wilderness for that of John‟s wilderness? Can we adopt the mission of John and herald the coming of Jesus, thereby drawing others to the salvation of God in Christ and prepare the way of the Lord into the hearts of others? Can we show the virtues of Faith, Hope and Love at home, at work, at school to be a witness to the Truth coming into the world? John spent much time alone with God. Can we take time and go into our prayer room and spend time with God, listening to His Will and word to us? Will we then act on that word in humility and obedience to His Will as John did? John did not seek recognition for himself, instead, when his followers pointed out to him that Jesus was baptizing many at the River Jordan his response was, “… it is right that I should become less, that He should become more”. Jesus said of John, “There is no man born of woman greater than John”. He lived in simplicity, humility and was totally dedicated to God. Material possessions certainly did not dominate his life. Does God come first in our lives in all we do? We will prepare the way of the Lord and make the crooked paths straight for ourselves (repentance) and others (proclamation of the coming of the Lord), when we can imitate the humility of John, the herald of the King. Repent, and prepare the Way of the Lord. In this time of Advent we are called to re-examine our lives and our relationship with God and to make smooth the uneven path in our lives. Saturday, December 15 9:15 AM Mass – † Jim Cassidy 10:00 AM 2:00 PM 4:00 PM 5:00 PM 6:30 PM Confessions Hope & Healing (F/R) Confessions Mass Lifeteen (S/R) F/R=Fraser Room, P/R=Pocock Room, S/R=Stephenson Room R/E= Religious Education Room How did God prepare the world for the mystery of Christ? CCCC522-524,102 “God prepared for the coming of His Son over the centuries. He awakened in the hearts of the pagans a dim expectation of this coming and He prepared for it specifically through the Old Testament, culminating with John the Baptist who was the last and greatest of the prophets. We relive this long period of expectancy in the annual liturgical celebration of the season of Advent”. CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR’S CONFESSION: SAINTS OF THE WEEK & MORE December 8 – The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary A feast dedicated to Mary‟s conception first appeared in the 7 th century and by the 12th century it was firmly established in England. In the 13th century such great thinkers as St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Bernard debated whether Mary could have been born without original sin, as St. Paul says all persons are born in sin (Romans 5.12). By the 19 th century, the theological debate was resolved and in 1854 Pius IX defined the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception as dogma of faith. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22ND FROM 9:45 AM - 11:45 AM. (Several priests will be available to hear confessions in various languages) CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE Mon. Dec. 24th Tues. Dec. 25th December 12 – Our Lady of Guadalupe Today‟s memorial commemorates the apparitions of the Blessed virgin in 1531 at Tepeyac, on the outskirts of Mexico City. Our Lady appeared four times, twice to aboriginal convert Juan Diego, with whom she left order to build a church and an imprint of her image on a cloak. This cloak is the object of great veneration and is preserved in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the major pilgrimage centres of North America. In 1946, Pius XII named her a patron of the Americas. December 14 – Saint John of the Cross St. John was born in 1542 at Fontiveros, Spain. He entered the Carmelite community and was ordained in 1567. With the great mystic, Teresa of Avila, he worked for the reformation of his order and helped found the reformed („Discalced‟) Carmelites. During his life, he suffered much, enduring imprisonment, humiliation and ill-treatment. His writings are both classics of spirituality and of Spanish literature. His best known works are The Ascent of Mount Carmel, The Dark Night of the Soul and The Living Flame of Love. He died in 1591, was canonized in 1726, and proclaimed Doctor of the church in 1926.
