Campion Corner June 2012 Issue 5 As our school year begins to come to an end the community of St. Edmund Campion S.S. has been reflecting on the great strides we have made this year to provide students with a quality educational experience. Our improvements in both our EQAO results and the Fraser Report have reinforced our efforts and showcased the excellence we offer at our school in terms of both academics and student involvement. The month of May was one filled with the harmony of our music department. Earlier in May our dedicated Music Teachers had our schools Jam Bands and Concert Band performed at St. Rita’s for a Transitions Concert. The grade 7 and 8 students were able to take part in a mini rendition of our school’s spring concert. On May 17th the Music Program held its annual Spring Concert also featuring 2011/2012 Battle of the Bands and Campion’s “Real” Guitar Hero Competition. In addition to an audience vote for the winners, there was also a raffle held. All raffle items were donated by business in the community, family members of the music students and friends of the music teachers. Our music teachers are very pleased as to efforts and enthusiasm students have shown over this school year. This school year our Campion Competitive Cheerleading Team, consisting of 19 male and female students, climbed their way to the Nationals Competition. This journey began in December when the team placed 4th at the Cheer for the Cure competition in Oshawa, cheering to spread awareness and raise money for Breast Cancer. The team participated in a fundraising event by selling hand-made Pink Mini-Cheerleading Bows and with combined efforts, donated a total of $949.00 towards the event. In February the Campion Cheerleading Team competed in the Regional Competition and placed second overall which led the team to the Provincial Competition in April. Campion placed first place in Co-Ed Intermediate division, making Campion Provincial Champions! We are extremely excited for these students and their achievements are a clear result of their ability to work hard as a team and persevere. Our Technology Department is also pleased to share with you the successes of our Communication Technology Students who their third consecutive Gold Medal for 3D Animation at the DPCDSB Skills Competition. This group of dedicated students placed 9th in the Province in the Ontario Skills Canada Challenge held on May 1st, this was a first ever for our school and has increased the interest of many students interested in a career in technology. This is the 5th anniversary of the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative YPI at St. Edmund Campion Secondary School. Each year teams of grade10 civics students delivers a presentation of their chosen local, grass roots, non profit charity to be the recipient of $5000.00 from YPI. To date Campion has been a part of creating social change for their chosen charities to a tune of $25,000.00. This year’s $5000.00 charity winner is Habitat For Humanity Brampton. Thomas Fischer, Executive Director was present to receive the donation from YPI and St. Edmund Campion grade 10 Civics students, Taylor Lawson, Cedric Cansino, Josephine Pornillos, and Selena Mota (please see attached photo above). Our School’s Health and Physical Education Program continues to offer new and exciting opportunities for its student body. By recognizing a niche in our school community we have added 2 new courses for the 2012 – 2013 school year. With such a keen interest in our Grade 10 Soccer Course students will be able to improve upon the skills and knowledge they have attained in grade 10 and apply them in a more challenging and vigorous environment with the Grade 11 Soccer Course. Students will be challenged in all areas of the game. This course’s secondary purpose is to aid and prepare Campion’s students to become part of its prestigious competitive Soccer program. In addition to Soccer, Campion Phys-Ed will be adding a Large Group Activities Basketball Course for the 2013-2014 school year. St. Edmund Campion’s most successful offering is the Personal and Fitness Activities Course. With over 150 students participating in this specific weight training program we felt there was a need to expand this success into the grade 12 level. We now have over 180 registered students in both the grade 11 and 12 courses. Alone, these courses account for over 20% of our Physical Education student body. By offering courses that appeal to our student’s it allows them to be successful in areas that are of interest to them. We believe this helps us achieve our primary goal of creating and enhancing positive learning experiences. These courses will meet the needs of our students and prove to be the perfect complement to our already successful and flourishing Physical Education program. We trust you have had a great school year and look forward to a relaxing summer ahead. We have enjoyed sharing our school’s good news with you and all of our upcoming events. God has continued to bless us with his grace and we are looking forward to what he He will reveal to us in the next school year.
