Principals’ Message
On behalf of the staff at Guardian Angels, we wish
everyone in our community a very healthy and
prosperous 2015. We hope that you had a blessed and
enjoyable Christmas holiday with family and friends.
Deep gratitude is extended to all for your generous
donations to our Toy Drive. Your generosity has made a
difference in the lives of others.
The month of January will focus on the virtue of “selfcontrol”. Each time we exercise self-control, we grow
stronger in the Lord and invite peace to settle over us and
we avoid any guilt we may feel from having made a poor
decision. We will continue to recognize students who
consistently make good decisions through our Virtues
initiatives.

A key aspect of the Board’s strategic direction is the
continued development of safe, caring, inclusive Catholic
school community. As a Catholic Community, we are called
to learn, grow and become more like Jesus. Catholic
education provides us the opportunity to integrate the
virtues into our students’ daily activity. The virtues will be
covered every month during morning announcements, in
class during discussions, and at our school Living Our
Faith Awards. Our next Living Our Faith Awards will take
place on:

Jesus spent a major part of his time on earth showing us
about the preferential option for the poor and weak. He
spent an extraordinary amount of time showing how to
follow God’s rules, the rules of the kingdom. We must
learn to follow His example.
In the month of January, we will celebrate the virtue of
SELF CONTROL. God has given us the ability to make
proper choices and exercise full control of our actions.
This freedom helps us realize our full potential as
children of God. God has given us the ability to know the
right and decent way to act and then to act that way. We
trust that the common Spirit we share inspires us and
guides us to make good decisions if we allow our
conscience to be well formed.

concert took place over two
nights, December 17th and
December 18th at 7:00 PM. The
children were excited to perform
Christmas songs to ring in the
joyous Christmas season.
In addition, we had a grand finale
song that filled everyone with the Christmas spirit. The
School Council sold refreshments on both nights of the
concert including Starbuck’s coffee, juice boxes and
Christmas cookies. They also
began promoting

Thursday, December 11th, to hear
confession for all baptized students
from grades 3-8. This was cancelled
due to the inclement weather that
day.
Confession
has
been
rescheduled to March 23rd @ 9:30 AM. The classroom
teacher will help students prepare for the sacrament by
reviewing what the children should say when they enter
the confessional, by helping reflect on the weaknesses,
and challenges we all face. Please note that only
students who are baptized Catholic and have received
the sacrament of Reconciliation will participate in this
celebration.

Epiphany is a feast rich in traditions:

Wise Men: were kings, astrologers, religious, wise
and learned men, according to Biblical scholars.

From the East: Persia (today, Iran)

the Gospel, tradition always thought of there being

The word Epiphany comes from the Greek language and
it means ‘manifestation, revelation’ of Jesus to the
Gentiles because He is for everyone. “The Kings opening
their store of treasures offered him gifts of gold,
frankincense and myrrh.” “The most precious gifts:” they
offer only the best for God. They offer him gold, a symbol
of royalty. They offer him incense, the perfume that was
burned each evening on the altar as a symbol of the hope
placed in the Messiah. They offer him myrrh, because
God Incarnate will take upon Himself our weaknesses
and be burdened with our sorrows.
Catholic Education Is Our Right!
On a regular basis, our school
newsletter will contain some
information
regarding
the
Historical Understanding of Key
Issues Related to Catholic
Education.
1.
How long have Catholic separate schools been educating
Catholic children and contributing to the public good in
Ontario?
For about 170 years. In the early 1800s there were separate
schools in many cities, towns and townships. In Peel, three
separate schools opened before Confederation (1867): St.
James in Malton in the 1830s, St. John’s Agricultural College
(1861) and St. Patrick’s (1861), both in Wildfield.
2.
Has the Ontario government always supported separate
schools?
Yes, as did its predecessor, the United Legislature of Canada
East (now Quebec) and Canada West (now Ontario) during its
total life from 1841 to 1867. One of the first pieces of
legislation it passed in 1841 was the Common School Act, with
a separate school clause.
3.
Why did the United Legislature of Canada East and
Canada West keep improving separate school
legislation?
Website: WWW.DPCDSB.ORG/GANGL
It responded to Catholic parents, trustees, bishops and priests,
editors of the four Catholic newspapers, members of the
business and professional world, all of whom argued for legal
and financial rights for separate schools.
4.
Was there opposition to separate schools before
Confederation?
Yes, as now, there were advocates of one school system.
Protestant spokespersons believed in the adequacy of the
common (now public) school’s basic non-denominational
Christianity, which constituted an important element of the
common school’s religion lessons and their readers. They held
that beliefs specific to certain religions should be taught in the
churches and homes.
First Term Report Cards
We sang our hearts out and knocked it out of the arena,
so to speak! The Star Spangled Banner was great (the
Sound crew forgot to turn on the mics for the first half of
the anthem) and Oh Canada was amazing as the crowd
cheered us on the whole way. What a great experience.
Thank you to the 302 supporters who cheered us on and
attended the game. Thank you to our choir leaders, Mrs.
Lyons, Ms. Schmaltz, Mrs. Gibson Power and Mr.
Resendes for their efforts with the choir. A video of the
choir will be made available towards the end of January.
J.K. Special Needs Students
Dufferin-Peel hosts Parent Evening to Support the
Transition of Students with Differing Abilities into
Kindergarten
On Tuesday, February 3,
2015, students will bring home
their first term report cards. The
Report Card emphasizes and
gives examples of the learning
skills and work habits required
to be successful in school and for the future. Teachers
will add meaningful, clear and personalized comments
so you can understand how your child is performing. The
Parent Interview Conference will be held the evening of
Thursday February 5th and during the day of Friday,
February 6th . This is an important opportunity for
teachers, parents and students to discuss their
child(ren)’s progress and next steps.
On January 8, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School
Board’s Special Education and Support Services
Department hosted a Kindergarten entry planning
information session. This meeting was for parents and
guardians of children with differing abilities which affect
their learning, such as vision, hearing, speech, autism,
physical/medical and/or developmental delays in the
cognitive and/or motor areas, who are entering
Kindergarten in September 2015. If you missed tis
meeting and need support, please call 905-890-0708 ext.

December 12th was a great night for our Raptor’s Choir.
We trekked down to the ACC at about 1:30 PM, hanging
out at Longo’s for lunch and then proceeding to complete
the pre-game warm up and sound check. After getting
things perfect on the first take, we were able to sit
courtside to watch the Raptors and the Pacers in their
pre-game warm up. We waited eagerly under the
bleachers and heard the game announcer call our name!
It was so exciting. We were led onto the court once again
– this time it was for real.

Snow Stays On The Ground
The winter weather has begun
and the wonderful pleasures
that come with winter such as
snow. Students are reminded
that “Snow Stays on the
Ground”. Frequent reminders
are made on the morning announcements. Students are
encouraged to constructively use the snow that winter
brings to build snowmen, forts, or snow sculptures.
Please assist us by reviewing with your child the dangers
of throwing snowballs and the importance of preventing
injury to other children. Together, we will create a
schoolyard, which is safe for all during winter. Another
important element of constructive play is respecting the
efforts of others. At Guardian Angels, students are
reminded to respect the efforts of others and to leave
snow forts or snowmen standing for all to enjoy.
We also ask that you reinforce with your children the
need for safe play on icy patches and on snow hills. No
pushing or shoving or rough play is acceptable as injuries
can result. Thank you.
Recess Expectations in the School Yard
The staff regularly remind students
to play safe when outside at recess.
Students are encouraged to use
good manners and manage conflicts
peacefully with kind words, and no
physical aggression. Students are
aware that games like tackle football, aggressive soccer
play, pushing and shoving, are all not acceptable.
Students who do run into difficulty are encouraged to
speak to a staff member on duty outside. There are
always staff available on the field and pavement. Staff
wear orange vests and carry walkie-talkies for support.

While we recognize that accidents happen, rough play,
bullying, physical aggression, foul language, etc. are all
not acceptable. This behaviour contravenes our Catholic
Code of Conduct. Our focus, as a Catholic school
community has been to teach and promote respect. We
speak and treat each other with respect. Please make
this topic a discussion with your children so that the
expectations at home and at school, are consistent.
From The Library
Forest of Reading
The Forest of Reading titles have
been announced and there has been
an amazing response from all our
Guardian Angels readers. The
students are very excited about the
programs, which are run through the
school library: Blue Spruce (grades 1,
2 and 3); Silver Birch Express (grades
3 and 4); Silver Birch- Fiction and Non Fiction (grades 5
and 6); and the Red Maple (grades 7 and 8). All students
in Grades 1, 2 and 3 will be participating in the Blue
Spruce program through visits to the school library. The
Silver Birch and Red Maple programs are run as a
reading program that runs until book nomination and
voting in April, where students from all across Ontario
decide this years’ winners. For more information about
Forest of Reading visit www.accessola.com and search
for the Forest of Reading section to view this year’s
nominated titles.
Wikis for Inquiry and Reading Clubs
Many of the students will be talking
about their Class wiki and/or Forest
of Reading wiki. You ask… what is
a wiki? A wiki is: “A Web site
developed collaboratively by a
community of users, allowing any
user to add and edit content.” Mr. Monardo continues the
use of Wikis throughout the 14/15 school Year.
We started exploring wikis with the Forest of Reading
wikis that students use to post comments and respond to
other student’s about the books that they were reading.
Some class wikis have been developed to support
Inquiry units for the Social Studies curriculum. The wikis
are monitored by the Teacher Librarian and/or the
classroom teacher and are password protected. Only
individuals invited into the wiki are allowed to participate
and the students have been taught how to be responsible
wiki users.
Website: WWW.DPCDSB.ORG/GANGL
The students have really excelled in their use of wikis and
it has been exciting to see this online technology excite
our learners. What a wonderful way to merge technology
with inquiry learning.
Just a friendly reminder to return overdue library books
so that other students may enjoy them. Thank you and
best wishes for 2015!
Marco Monardo, Teacher Librarian
School Security Protocol
We have taken proactive measures
to secure the safety of staff and
students by locking the front door.
Visitors may gain entrance by
pressing a buzzer mounted on the
wall.. The buzzer activates a 2-way
speaker and camera system. The office will then be able
to tell who is at the door through a TV monitor and thus,
regulate visitor access to the school.
Our Choir
The Primary-Junior choir sang their
way into the hearts of many this year.
We had the opportunity to spread
Christmas joy and sing at Fortinos on
December 10th at 10:30. Parents
attended this exciting musical event.
The Choir also sings at our masses and our Living Our
Faith Awards.
Telephone Calls to the School
Each day our office receives numerous
phone calls from parents with
messages for their children. With the
lines tied up, these calls are often left
as voicemail. We ask that you please
ensure that arrangements are made
the night before and children know
what they are to do after school. We encourage parents to
send lunches, notes and messages in the morning with
their child(ren) in an effort to avoid interruptions. We
understand that emergencies do happen and we will do
our best to assist in these situations. Thank you for your
cooperation.
Safe School Mission Statement
Guardian Angels is a Catholic
community that respects and
promotes the uniqueness of all
its members. By following the
teachings of Jesus, we pledge
to provide everyone with a
safe, caring and peaceful
environment, which ensures the respect and acceptance
of all. Because of these beliefs, bullying will not be
tolerated. Your child deserves a safe environment to
work, learn and play in. If you have any concerns, please
contact us. Thank you for supporting us as we support
your child.

School Bus Safety Rules
The conduct of individual students on the
bus directly affects the safety of all the
students on the bus.
The driver’s
attention needs to be on the road. We
are requesting that all parents/guardians
reinforce the School Bus Rules with their child(ren). All
Students Should:
 Be at the bus stop 5-10 minutes prior to their stop
time.
 Never play close to the road.
 Be ready to board the bus by waiting in an orderly
line.
 Board the bus in single file, use the handrail and sit
down in their seat as quickly as possible.
 Listen to the bus driver.
 Always remain seated while the bus is moving.
 Do not throw anything out of the window.
Website: WWW.DPCDSB.ORG/GANGL
 Keep the aisles clear of objects (backpacks, lunches,
etc.).
 Do not shout or cause any other unnecessary noises.
 Never put any part of your body out an open window.
 Be sure to look all ways before crossing the road.
 Do not damage the bus in any way.
 Do not throw garbage on the floor.
 Do not consume any food or drink on the bus.
Bus privileges can be revoked. Thank you for your support
in ensuring that students journey safely on the bus. Drivers
can report students to the school for inappropriate
behaviour.
Dropping off Lunches
parents are responsible for arranging to pick up their child
on time at the end of the day. Students from grade 2 to 8
are released at their exit door.
Kindergarten and Gr 1 students ONLY are released
from the Kindergarten fenced yard. Those parents
must pull up to the Kiss and Ride curb and their child
will come to them. A teacher will be on duty to assist.
Only bus students exit at the end of the day through
the front doors. Students walking with siblings are
asked to have a meeting spot at the back of the school.
Kiss & Ride: When it Snows
Once it snows, several difficulties arise:
Lunches should
be dropped off
between
12:00
PM and 12:30
PM. Parents will
label the lunch with the student and teacher’s name.
Parents can simply place their child’s lunch in the
appropriate class basket. A class runner will deliver the
lunches to the classrooms. Student helpers can earn
volunteer hours delivering the lunches.
Note that priority will be given to dealing with office
and student needs not answering the new front
doorbell, so dropping off lunches after 12:30 PM may
delay your entry.
Kiss & Ride Drop Off and Pick Up
It is important when you are dropping off
your child in the morning that you enter
the Kiss and Ride lane and not the drive
through lane and proceed to end of the
lane before allowing your child to get
out of the car. Students must exit from
the right hand side of the car (closest to
the school) and parents should remain
in the car. Parents may then enter the
“drive thru” lane only to exit the parking
 Narrowing streets and fewer spots to park
 Fewer parking spots for staff
 More cars and a busier Kiss and Ride
While it is easy to understand the frustration experienced
by drivers, the By-laws remain the same. As we instituted
changes last year, Kiss and Ride enter and exit times
averaged 15-20 minutes. It slowly improved over the
winter to about 8 minutes; quite efficient.
What can WE do to help make things better once
the snow starts?
1. Encourage your kids to walk when possible.
2. Park on adjacent streets. Avoid Heatherdale if
possible.
3. Consider not entering the Kiss and Ride…drop your
kids off by the sidewalk and they can walk the
remaining few feet, allowing you to drive away.
4. Carpool…fewer cars saves gas, is faster and helps
the environment.
5. Qualified children can take the school bus.
6. If you must drive, arrive before 9 AM and avoid the
rush.
7. Do not get out of your car. That will just make things
much slower and frustrate the drivers behind you.
8. Wait your turn to get to the Kiss and Ride curb and
your child will come to you.
9. Finally – be patient, please. THANK YOU!
lot.
Please do NOT leave your car in the Kiss and Ride
Lane. If you need to come into the school, you must park.
In a parking spot. These rules are enforced and you
could be fined if not abiding by Brampton’s By-laws.
If walking your child to school in the morning or picking
them up at the end of the day, parents are asked to remain
either behind the black fence by the parking lot, on the
path closest to the school, or on the perimeter of the
school pavement. This is for your child’s safety, as
teachers on duty cannot distinguish parents from
“strangers” in the yard with such a large school. NOTE:

called Prodigy. Prodigy offers engaging interactivities for
children to practise their math skills in class and at home,
and provides critical thinking experience. Prodigy allows
students to learn at their own pace, put them at ease and
reduce the stress of the lesson. Prodigy’s Grade 3
EQAO curriculum was specifically design based on the
past 5 years of EQAO testing. The students love Prodigy
and play every Friday for 40 minutes
at the computer lab! Over the past
two months, the students have

We hope that everyone had a safe and
relaxing break and that you are all ready
to be back in school. This month we will
be continuing our literacy focus on letters
and sight words, as well as starting to
write friendly letters and greeting cards.
In math, we will continue to work on
number sense and recognition while beginning to learn
about measurement and the tools in our classroom to
compare objects. Using snow, we will be inquiring about
winter and doing some fun experiments! We hope that we
will be busy enough to forget about the
cold. Please check out our class Twitter for updates on
what is going on in room 104. @GAFDKRM104

Welcome back and Happy New Year to
everyone! We hope everyone had a
safe and restful Christmas! The children
are very excited to be back at school
after the Christmas break! This January
we will continue to practice our letters
and letter sounds. We will also learn some new sight
words that will help us read our Snuggle Books at home
and print sentences at school in our writing area.
This school year we have been
having lots of fun doing school work
as well as creating many fun and
amazing memories together.We have
accomplished many of our goals as a
class and have been working hard.
During class time we have been
helping each other by sharing our strategies and ideas.
We are beginning our new inquiry and the children have
been very interested in birds. We will be learning what
birds like to eat, how they build their nests and so much
more! Working together as a class, we are changing our
drama/family area into a café, where children can go and
“buy” their hot chocolates and teas and relax by the cozy
fireplace! Follow us on Twitter @GAFDK103. We are
looking forward to all our new learning in 2015!
In addition, every month we focus on the monthly virtues
and discuss how we can express and show these
aspects around the school environment. Starting this
month, our class has begun a new Language unit called
“Future Worlds Book Club”, where we read about
dystopian societies and converse among our peers
about the different novels we read. Thanks to our 3-part
math lessons, we share our ideas and strategies, and
learn from one another, which helps us become
successful in learning new content.
Welcome to Mrs. Kotarska’s Class
As technology continues to
become a more integrated part of
our lives, Mrs. Kotarska’s Grade 3
students recently signed up to use

Overall, we as Grade 8 students strive for success in
everything we do in our last year. We are doing our best
to make our last year a very memorable one with our
graduating class of 2015. We look forward to the
upcoming future events such as our New York trip,
Confirmation and Graduation. With great things
happening and coming up, we hope to have a good year
by working harder, having fun, and completing our
projects and assignments.

Math: Geometry
Grade 4: Using the three-part math lesson model we are
looking at identifying quadrilaterals and classifying them
by their geometric properties, and comparing various
angles. Students will be constructing three-dimensional
figures using two-dimensional shapes. Students will also
be identifying and describing the location of an object
using a grid map, and reflecting two-dimensional shapes.
Grade 5: Using the three-part math lesson model we are
looking at identifying and classifying two-dimensional
shapes by size and angle properties, and comparing and
sorting three-dimensional figures. Students will be
identifying and constructing nets of prisms and pyramids
and identifying and describing the location of an object,
using the cardinal directions, and translating twodimensional shapes.
Language: Independent/Guided Reading, Analyzing &
Predicting; Summarizing/ Persuasive Writing
Social Studies: Grade 4’s: Physical Regions of
Canada
Students are focusing on exploring a specific region with
a partner describing their main characteristics,
comparing two regions, and looking at the environmental
impacts of each physical region of Canada.
Grade 5’s: The Role of Government and Responsible
Citizenship
Students are focusing on demonstrating an
understanding on the roles and key responsibilities of
citizens and of the different levels of government in
Canada.
Don’t forget that students can use their Social Studies

2-D Geometry!
In Language Arts we are learning about summarizing.
Summaries are fun because you improve your
vocabulary and they help us understand the stories
better. We also created power points about camera
angles. Power points are interesting because you can
be creative with your slides and transitions. We present
“book talks” to the class on books that we have read and
talk about the characteristics of a narrative. Language is
fun!
In Science, we have been talking about stewardship and
how we can help the environment. We have been
discussing how people can take and use natural
resources, but still take care of the earth, without hurting
it. One Science project that we did was we researched
an animal and it’s habitat and then acted like that animal
and explained to the class what we needed to have in
order to survive. Some students dressed up like sharks,
leopards and even scorpions. It was fun to watch and to
learn about different animals. Next, we’ll be learning
about light and sound!
Thank you to Lukas Pacheco, Chantelle Spence, and
Alana Smith for their insight on each of our topics.
Student Council

Guardian Angels student council has organized various
events to entertain and satisfy the student body. These
events include our fun, upbeat, and spooky annual
Halloween dance, where all the students had fun
dressing up in their costumes; Our Christmas cookie
grams in December- selling over 1200 delicious Terra
Cotta Cookies; using a portion of
the money raised to fund for our
annual dance for Christmas. In
addition,
the
week
before
Christmas, Guardian Angels hosted
various activities, which we called
“Christmas Spirit Week”.
Over the course of five days, we celebrated the spirit of
Christmas by wearing our ugly Christmas sweaters,
Website: WWW.DPCDSB.ORG/GANGL
Santa hats, and reindeer antlers. The following
Wednesday and Thursday consisted of the performing of
the primary Christmas concert. It was a pleasure to see,
and definitely, it entertained all the parents, staff, and
students. To end this celebratory week, Guardian Angels
student council performed a short play about St Nicholas
and sang Christmas carols as a school community, for
the second consecutive year. Each student enjoyed this
fun day, which was made even better by wearing his or
her pajamas.
As of now, in 2015, Guardian Angels student council has
several events planned; Valentine’s Day cookie grams,
followed by another school dance, and more to make our
2015 school year not only an entertaining one, but a
memorable one. We hope to see our peers enjoy this
year!
Mrs. Galos’ Grade 7 Class
Happy New Year! What a school
year it has been so far! To sum it
up, in December, to celebrate the
joyous season, we had a lot of fun
activities: a Christmas dance,
pajama day, delicious cookie
grams and so much more! The
first term was not all fun and
games; we had to work hard to earn the privileges. For
example, completing our patterning and algebra unit in
math; identifying the differences between weather and
climate in Geography; studying structures and their
functions through scientific inquiries, and also learning
how our choices shape who we are in the Language Arts
unit, “This is Who I am”.
On the creative front, we will be making music videos
with our own personal lyrics, under the direction of Mr.
Resendes. In dance, Mrs. Sousa spent time teaching us
different dance movements. We were then charged with
combining them in a student choreographed culminating
task. Now, we are learning the different types of dance,
and their history.
To start the New Year, we are continuing with the
measurement unit in math and learning how to live a
balanced life in health. We are looking forward to our trip
to Silver Creek later this month, where we will learn
survival skills like starting a fire, building a shelter, and
creating safe drinking water. On the trip, we will be given
a chance to experience the traditional travel techniques
of First Nations and learn about the history of the
snowshoe. To add to that, for an extra boost of
excitement and energy, we will be given the opportunity
to play The Amazing Race, which will not only test our
problem solving skills, but also our sportsmanship.
Another trip that many of us are counting down the days
to, is the 4 day trip to New York City in May. All the
students who have registered are ecstatic.
