PRAYER FOR MOTHERS
Creator of All, we thank you for mothers to whom You have entrusted
the care of every precious human life from its very beginning in the womb.
To mothers, You have given the capacity of participating with You in the creation of new life,
and the privilege and responsibility of being a child's first teacher and spiritual guide. Grant
that all mothers may worthily foster the faith of their children, following the example of Mary,
Blessed Mother of our Lord, and other holy women who follow Christ. May Your Holy Spirit
constantly inspire and guide them.
May all mothers receive Your Grace abundantly so that they may come to understand
the full meaning of these blessings. Strengthen all mothers with an unlimited capacity for
selfless love for her children and for all Your children, recognizing the true dignity
of every human being created in Your image and likeness.
We ask this through our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
+ AMEN.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK
Pope Francis has declared 2016 a “Holy Year of Mercy” as a way for the Catholic church to “make more evident, its mission
to be a witness of mercy”. The Holy Year began on December 8, 2015 and will be celebrated until November 20, 2016.
Throughout the year, there will be a series of jubilee celebrations on the theme of mercy for teenagers, deacons, the sick
and disabled, prisoners, catechists and clergy.
As well, Pope Francis opened the Vatican’s Holy Door on December 8th. The Holy Door is opened to evoke the concept of
forgiveness which is the main focus of a Holy Year. The theme God’s mercy is illustrated in fifteen of the sixteen bronze
panels that make up the Vatican Door. There are seven such Holy Doors in the world, including one in Quebec City.
Catholic Education Week 2016 combines both the theme of mercy and the act of opening doors of reconciliation, mercy
and forgiveness to all around us. Throughout Ontario, we will celebrate Catholic Education during the week of May 1st to
May 6th, 2016. Catholic Education Week begins on a Sunday to highlight the partnership that remains the foundation of
Catholic education between our Catholic schools and local Catholic parishes.
There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week:
Monday:
Mercy that Welcomes
Tuesday:
Mercy that Loves
Wednesday:
Mercy that Forgives
Thursday:
Mercy that Lives the Gospel
Friday:
Mercy that Rejoices
Every year, the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) provides our Catholic schools with a resource kit to
help schools prepare for Catholic Education Week. Using these resources as well as our own developed activities we have
prepared a series of activities which will highlight how our school is ‘Opening Doors of Mercy’.
We hope to see many of you during our school celebrations. Please see invitation with schedule enclosed.

CLASS PLACEMENTS FOR 2016-2017
We will be making up class lists for the next school year this month. In each class, we strive for a balance of learning needs,
and a cross-section of abilities. The current teachers of a grade, support staff and administrator all take part in the
process. If you, as a parent or guardian, wish to provide input into the process, please take into consideration the following
guidelines:
•
•
•
•
Input must be in written form to the principal prior to Monday May 2nd, 2016
Frame your request in terms of educational contexts (example learning needs/style).
Please note that letters which cite the names of individual teachers cannot be considered.
Information from all sources will be pooled to assist us in making the most appropriate placement for your child.
Thank you for your cooperation.
MOVING/NEW REGISTRATIONS
If you are moving from our area and will not be attending Cardinal Newman in September 2016, or you have a change of
address or contact information, please inform the Office as soon as possible.
In addition, if you know of families who will be registering their children to attend Cardinal Newman School in September
2016, please encourage them to register them as soon as possible. Our class organization and school staffing for September
relies on accurate enrolment projections.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
To continue promoting healthy eating, the importance of physical activity, and the benefits of giving back to their
community, the students at Cardinal Newman School are once again being asked to participate in the Jump For Heart Event.
Supporting kids' health for more than 30 years, Heart & Stroke Jump Rope for Heart encourages kids to get active by
skipping rope while they collect pledges for heart disease and stroke research. The program gives children the chance to
jump and play alongside 750,000 other kids in more than 4,000 schools across Canada. The Kick-Off assembly will take place
on May 3rd, 2016, with the actual event coming into full swing on May 20th. For more information about the event please
feel free to visit the following website: http://jumpropeforheart.ca/jumphomepage.
SOCCER INTRAMURALS
Soccer Intramurals will continue throughout the month of May. Grade 2 and 3 students who have signed up, are asked to
check the updated soccer schedule that was distributed following the initial games. Thank you to Ms. Sztork and Mrs.
Crowley-Weber for organizing this for our students.
INTERMEDIATE GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAM
Congratulations to our Intermediate Girls’ Basketball team for finishing first in their Brampton North East Family-Mini
Tournament! The resiliency our girls demonstrated in the championship game was resounding. After losing to St. John
Fisher in the round robin by 2 points, the girls fought back impressively to beat St. John Fisher 15-5 in our final game. These
girls demonstrated hard work, team work, responsibility, commitment and resiliency throughout our entire season. The
girls will be travelling to St. Anthony on May 5th to compete in the next round of our Family of Schools tournament. Good
luck girls! Thank you to Ms. Moniz-Baptista for her dedication and work with our Intermediate Girls’ Basketball Team.
YEARKBOOK
The 2015/2016 yearbook is well underway and it has proven to be a major success with the help of all the families that have
pre-ordered their copies. We have had an overwhelming amount of orders which promises to provide amazing memories of
all the major events from this school year. Thank you for all the orders that have come in! You can expect to receive your
yearbook by the end of June.

SCHOOL FOCUS AND COLLABORATIVE INQUIRY
Our school focus this year will be on building “Collaborative Inquiry” (staff and students working together) while focusing
on the development of learning skills and growth mindsets. Growth mindset is a belief that a learner’s abilities can grow
and are not fixed. Inquiry-based learning is an approach to teaching and learning that places students’ questions, ideas and
observations at the centre of the learning experience. Studies show that student achievement improves enormously when
students are engaged in collaborative inquiry. Our school’s collaborative focus for 2015-2016 is:
“If we continue to model a growth mindset, through educator collaboration, as we focus on inquiry practices [in MATH,
FSL, NM, ETC.] and the explicit teaching of learning skills, then student engagement and achievement will improve.”
At school, teachers and students will work together to construct a list of behaviours and habits for each Learning Skill. Each
list will be written in kid-friendly language to help students understand each Learning Skill better. This will give students an
understanding of how each Learning Skill can be applied inside and outside of school. The school will focus on one of the
six Learning Skills each month. The students will learn the indicators for each skill and what learning habits they need to
continue to develop to lead them toward success.
To further support our collaborative inquiry, all classroom teacher are using the Mind Up resource as part of creating
conditions for learning. This resource contains lessons designed for helping students focus their attention, improve their
self-regulation skills, build resilience to stress, and develop a positive mind-set in both school and life.
In response to our EQAO statistic, we are also using Intervention Meetings for level 2 students to close the achievement
gap. At these interventions meetings, the team discuss various interventions strategies to support our level 2 learners.
CATHOLIC SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETINGS
Communication between home and school is enhanced greatly by parental involvement with the Catholic
School Advisory Council (CSAC). All parents/guardians are encouraged to come out to and participate in
meetings. The aim of the Catholic School Advisory Council is to promote the vision, values, sacramental life
and Catholic practices of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the Catholic community it
serves, and to advise the principal and the Board.
Our Catholic School Advisory Council will be holding their meetings at 6:30 p.m. in the Library. All parents are invited to
attend. Please see dates below:
Future Meeting Dates:
Tuesday, May 17, 2016
Tuesday, June 7, 2016 (Year-End Social – Potluck)
YARD SUPERVISION
A reminder to the parents and students that yard supervision does not begin until 9:00 a.m. Students
who arrive early at school will have to remain outside. Some parents drop off their children as early as 8:45
a.m. This practice puts your children at risk. We respectfully remind you that it is your responsibility to
ensure appropriate care for your children prior to 9:00 a.m.
KISS AND RIDE
The school’s Kiss and Ride Program is located at the front of the building. The “Kiss and Ride” lane is for
stopping to drop off your child. It is NOT for parking in the morning. If you need to come into the school,
please park in a designated parking spot. The parking authorities frequently make visits to our school and
many members of our community have been ticketed with very expensive fines. For parents/guardians who wish to walk
their child to the Kindergarten area, please park your car in the parking area. Please do not park in the Kiss and Ride area or
the reserved parking spots
TRANSPORTATION
BUS LOADING ZONE
Please be reminded that the front of the school is designated as a “Bus Loading Zone”. Parents/guardians are
not permitted to pick up or drop off students in this zone. The safety of the students is our priority. Please
drop off or pick up students in the designated school parking lot or the “Kiss and Ride” area.
Please ensure that your child rides the bus to which he or she has been assigned. If you wish to change your child’s bus, bus
stop or have concerns about the bus schedule you must contact the Transportation (STOPR) department directly at (905)
890-6000.
It is a parental responsibility to ensure that kindergarten and Grade 1 students are met at the bus. If the bus driver does not
see a parent or sitter at the scheduled bus stop, the child will be returned to school.
6
VISITORS AT THE SCHOOL & SAFE SCHOOLS ACCESS
All visitors and parents are requested to enter the building through the front door and check in at the
office. Please sign in, and obtain a pass if you plan to remain in the building for any reason during school
hours. Please understand that during instructional time, teachers are not available to meet with you or
to take phone calls. All messages or deliveries for students will be handled through the front office.
Students are expected to enter and exit through their designated doors.
THE ONLINE REPORTING TOOL
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School board has developed a new way to help nurture a safe, caring and inclusive school
environment. The Online Reporting Tool is intended for students in grades 3 – 8 who become aware of bullying incidents
and negative behaviours. The student can simply ‘click’ on the link found on our school’s website to fill out the report. The
report will then be directly emailed to the principal and vice-principal to be dealt with accordingly. It is important to
recognize that the Online Reporting Tool is an alternate reporting option. It is best practice to speak directly with a
responsible adult at home and/or in the school.
PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES ON BOARD PREMISES
AND/OR BOARD SANCTIONED EVENTS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES:
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges the value of the use of technology for learning. Students are
permitted to register and use personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises and/or board sanctioned events for
educational purposes, under the direction of staff and only with parent/guardian permission. Students may register their
PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network. Students are required to adhere to the student “Personal
Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network Student Agreement” (GF 337) and the “Network User Application and
Agreement.” (GF066) Please be advised that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will not be responsible for
any cost incurred through the use of personal data plans.
PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere with learning; their use must comply with the Catholic Code of
Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone calls, text messages, etc.) will continue
to be directed through the main office. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in a loss of PED privileges and/or
any other consequences deemed necessary by school administration.
The school principal may authorize limited acceptable uses of personal electronic devices during school-sanctioned activities
for a specific designated purpose outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas.
Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for lost,
damaged or stolen devices.
INDOOR/ OUTDOOR SHOES
The students should have a pair of indoor shoes to wear at school in class and for gym. Outdoor shoes/ boots will be kept
for outdoor use only and out of the classrooms in order to reduce the amount of dirt and mud brought indoors. This will
assist our custodial staff in keeping the school clean. Thank you for your co-operation.
LATE ARRIVALS & EARLY DEPARTURES
As in the past, we ask that you call the school on the days that your child will be absent or late. This is a safety
precaution that can save precious moments should there ever be an emergency situation. We thank you for
your continued support in following this procedure. If your child will be late or absent from school, it is very
important that you notify the school before 9:00 a.m. by leaving a voice mail message on the attendance line at 905-7922268 and pressing 1, for the attendance voice mail. You should speak clearly and leave the child’s FIRST and LAST NAME,
the teacher’s name, and the reason for the absence or lateness. Any student arriving at school late is required to come to
the office to request a late slip. This allows us to change our attendance information, and mark your child late, rather than
absent. It is very important that students arrive to school on time and ready to work, as late arrivals disrupt instructional
activities and classroom routines. We respectfully request that whether students walk or are driven to school, that they are
at school before the bell rings at 9:15 a.m.
7
LUNCH HOUR
During the lunch hour, all students who stay for lunch are expected to remain at school, and all students who go home for
lunch are expected to go home for lunch. If there is a change in the regular lunch hour procedure for your child,
parents/guardians are asked to provide the teacher with a note explaining the change. Student safety is essential at Cardinal
Newman School. For this reason, students staying for lunch at school will not be permitted to go to the local plaza.
We would like to remind you that the school is not equipped to provide lunches to students who are sent to school
without a lunch. Please ensure that your child has a suitable lunch, every day. If you plan to deliver your child’s lunch to
the school, please ensure that it is delivered before 12:10 p.m. and is left on the table outside the main office.
LUNCHES BROUGHT TO THE OFFICE
Please consider having your children bring their lunches with them in the morning as the Safe Schools Access
Protocol may cause delays in your child receiving lunch. If you are bringing a lunch for your child to pick up
from the office, please ensure that it is labelled with your child’s name, teacher’s name and room number.
Please instruct your child to come to the front lobby and pick it up from the lunch table. In keeping your
child’s safety at heart, students will not be permitted to go out of the building to get their lunches. In order to avoid
interruptions to instructional time, students will not be called from class.
PAPERLESS SNACKS/LUNCHES
Students and staff are encouraged to be environmentally friendly by reducing the amount of paper and plastic
waste from lunches and snacks. Last year we received GOLD level standing ECO school certification. Students
will have an opportunity to eat snacks before or after recess. Wasps, bees and birds continue to be a problem in
the schoolyard, thus snacks will not be permitted in the playground.
SEVERE FOOD ALLERGIES
Peanut and Other Life-Threatening Allergies, Sabrina’s Law Anaphylaxis Reaction
As we begin the new school year, we would like to inform you that Cardinal Newman School is an
allergen-aware school.
There are pupils in attendance at our school who suffer from severe and life-threatening allergies to
certain foods, such as peanut and tree nut products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause severe and lifethreatening reactions. Anaphylaxis is a severe and life threatening allergic reaction. The most common allergen triggers are
food, insect stings, medications, exercise and latex. An anaphylactic reaction involves symptoms from two or more body
systems.
We require your continued cooperation in sending foods to school with your child that are free from peanuts, nuts or their
by-products, and nut-substitute products. We cannot guarantee that any classroom is nut free, but we are attempting to
minimize exposure and keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible. We appreciate your help and support in this
important issue. We ask you to please refrain from sending birthday and special occasion edible treats into your child’s
class. Instead, perhaps you could recognize a special event by sending in a non-edible treat e.g., pencils, stickers,
notebooks. Another alternative is to commemorate your child’s birthday by purchasing a book for donation to our school
library. Should you wish to do so, we will be happy to place a sticker with a sentiment similar to: “Donated by Noah Brooks
in honour of his 5th birthday on October 18th, 2015”. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.
If your child has been diagnosed with a severe allergy and you have not notified the school, please do so immediately.
There are forms that must be completed. Please speak with our secretaries, Mrs. Cosentino and Mrs. Machado to obtain
the requisite paperwork.
Your continued cooperation in support of our efforts to create a safe and healthy learning environment for all is greatly
appreciated!

PIZZA AND SUBWAY LUNCHES
Pizza Days continue to run on Tuesdays. The cost is $2.00. All profits from this fundraising initiative will go to support various
school initiatives (classroom libraries, fees for tournaments, replace outdoor recess equipment, school presentations, etc.).
With special thanks to Mrs. Dafoe for organizing Pizza days for our students.
Mr. Sub is supplying our subs this year. We will have sub day on the 3rd Thursday of the month. Sub days for the 20152016 school year are May 19th, and June 16th. Order forms will be sent home each month. Please complete and submit
order forms by the indicated due date on the form. With special thanks to Mrs. Machado for organizing sub days for our
students.
SNACK SHACK
The Snack Shack is opened on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. With special thanks to Mrs. Cicione, Mrs.
Caputo-Rostami, and Mrs. Rockwood for their generosity in supervising this program.
HEAD INJURIES
Even when it may appear to be insignificant, we are obliged to inform parents and guardians of all reported head injuries
occurring at school. We do this in recognition of the potential danger of any injury involving the head area. Our interest is
not to alarm you, but to keep you informed. Please remind your child to let a staff member know if they bump their head or
if they get hurt at school.
PEDICULOSIS – HEAD LICE
Pediculosis is not considered a health problem because it is not a communicable disease. However, from time to time
incidents of pediculosis occur in any school. It is recommended that parents inspect their children’s hair, especially if
persistent itching and scratching of the scalp is noticed. Please inform the school if you discover an infestation. Your
pharmacist may suggest treatment information. Remind your child that it is not appropriate to share other children’s combs
and/or headgear, hats, etc.
MEDICATION
We have a number of students in the school with health conditions requiring specialized medication or supervision. In order
for students to have access to medicine on a daily basis or for us to store medication in the school, your doctor MUST complete
the required form. Please ask Mrs. Cosentino or Mrs. Machado for the GF035 should you wish for us to store your child’s
prescription or doctor authorized medication. All medication of this sort is to be stored in the school office. We take this
precaution so that medication does not fall into the wrong hands. If your child has a medical condition, please notify the
school office.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS
All volunteers having direct contact with students are required to provide a C.B.C. (Criminal Background Check). The new
board policy has been expanded and includes volunteering on class trips, in classrooms, Catholic School Advisory Council, etc.
If there are any community members wishing to volunteer, please visit the school office to pick up the necessary volunteer
criminal reference check paperwork.
EXCURSIONS AND FIELD TRIPS
Classes occasionally take educational trips to extend learning opportunities in curriculum areas. Teachers need to follow
appropriate Board procedures. A limited number of trips may be planned by teachers. By LAW the school must have on file
permission forms, which must be signed by the parents/guardians.
If, on the day of the excursion, your child has not returned his/her forms, and the parent/guardian cannot come into the
school to sign the permission forms, the student will remain at the school. Students will be reminded by their teachers about
this policy prior to the trip taking place.
Staff will offer generous timelines for return of trip permission forms and funds in order that parents/guardians have
significant opportunity to submit all paperwork and fees. Parents wishing to volunteer as supervisors must have a valid
Criminal Background Check and/or a current Annual Offense Declaration on file at our office.

SCHOOL WEBSITE & EMAIL COMMUNICATION
CANADA’S ANTI-SPAM LEGISLATION
On July 1, 2014, Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) came into law. It prohibits the sending of commercial electronic
