PRAYER FOR ADVENT … A TIME OF HOPE God of eternal hope, You sent Your only Son, Jesus, the Light of the World, to save us. As we journey, like Mary and Joseph, to Bethlehem’s stable, like the shepherds, our ears attuned to the song of angels, like the magi, our eyes alert for a bright star, forgive us if, on our journey, we are hurried and get distracted by the tempting offers of this world. As we light the candles on our Advent wreath each week, may we rekindle within ourselves the desire to make peace with Jesus and with one another. May the flame of His presence grow brighter and brighter in our hearts, in our homes, in our school, and in our world as we prepare and wait for His coming. May the God of hope fill us all with joy and peace this Christmas by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit. + AMEN.

We hope that you will be able to join us to celebrate our faith, pray as a community, and have an opportunity to wish each other a blessed and joyful Christmas. THE MEANING OF ADVENT The word Advent derives from the Latin word meaning “coming”. We reflect every year at this time the magic of the birth of Jesus. During Advent, we recall the history of God's people and reflect on how the prophecies and promises of the Old Testament were fulfilled. This gives us a background for the present and future of our world. CHRISTMAST BASKETS This year the staff and students of Cardinal Newman will be participating in the yearly Christmas Charity. Staff and students are encouraged to donate toiletries or offer financial donations. All money collected will be used to buy toys, hats, mittens and food for needy families within our community. A letter from our Christmas Basket Committee will be sent home soon with more details. CHRISTMAS BREAK The dates for the Christmas Holiday this year are Monday, December 21, 2015 to Friday, January 1, 2016. Classes resume Monday January 4, 2016. PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES ON BOARD PREMISES AND/OR BOARD SANCTIONED EVENTS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES: The Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges the value of the use of technology for learning. Students are permitted to register and use personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises and/or board sanctioned events for educational purposes, under the direction of staff and only with parent/guardian permission. Students may register their PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network. Students are required to adhere to the student “Personal Electronic Device Used with WI‐FI Network Student Agreement” (GF 337) and the “Network User Application and Agreement.” (GF066) Please be advised that the Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School Board will not be responsible for any cost incurred through the use of personal data plans. PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere with learning; their use must comply with the Catholic Code of Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone calls, text messages, etc.) will continue to be directed through the main office. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in a loss of PED privileges and/or any other consequences deemed necessary by school administration. The school principal may authorize limited acceptable uses of personal electronic devices during school‐sanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas. Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices. LIBRARY NEWS From the Desk of Mrs. Resendes: The book take away was a huge success! Thank you to all of the families who came out to help find some of our gently used books new homes! We hope everyone enjoys their new books! The Scholastic Book Fair will be coming to Cardinal Newman in January. This is a great opportunity to purchase brand new books for your children and support the library in the process. We hope everyone will be able to make it out to buy a new book! More information will follow. CARDINAL NEWMAN PASTORAL PLAN An Elementary Committee with representation of Supervisory Officers, Program Staff, Secondary Administration and Elementary Administration developed an elementary pastoral planning template. This template provides an opportunity for consistency in the development of a pastoral plan in elementary schools. The Cardinal Newman Pastoral Plan for 2015‐
2016 is posted to the school website. CARDINAL NEWMAN LEADERSHIP TEAM The Cardinal Newman Leadership Team has displayed outstanding leadership in planning various activities at Cardinal Newman, including our Remembrance Day Liturgy. They have planned an exciting Spirit Week during the month of December. Their leadership, enthusiasm and positive attitude are a gift! We are grateful to Mr. Moroniewicz and Mr. Racco for their leadership in leading this wonderful group of students. SAFE, CARING, INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES Neighbourhood Policing Unit Officers: Cardinal Newman C.E.S. has the privilege of working alongside a number of police officers. Thank you to our Neighbourhood Policing Unit Officer, Constable G. Martin. Iron John and Iron Joan After School Program: Special thanks also to our Iron John and Iron Joan mentors from Sheridan College. These men and women have been exceptionally generous in their commitment to our students and staff. Their presence and example have had a profoundly positive effect on the lives of our children and we are extremely grateful for their compassionate dedication to our community. Please note that during Sheridan College’s Christmas Break, the Iron John and Iron Joan after‐school programs will not run. The last week of the program is December 15th, 16th and 17th. The program will resume on a weekly basis beginning on Tuesday, January 19th, 2016. The Iron John and Iron Joan program will end for the school year on April 21st, 2016. “TOYS FOR TOTS” CHARITY HOCKEY GAME Our Iron John and Joan Justice Mentor volunteers from Sheridan College’s Police Foundations Program invite our Grade 6, 7, and 8 classes to attend a “Toys for Tots” Charity Hockey game on Wednesday, December 2nd, 2015 from 11:30 a.m. ‐ 2:30 p.m. The hockey game will feature two teams: Iron Johns versus members of Peel Regional Police. Switzer Carty donated the buses for this event. In the Spirit of the season and to support this excellent cause, we request that each student make a minimum donation of $2 which will be given to the organizers for buying Christmas gifts for “Toys for Tots” of families in need. EQAO Last spring, the Primary and Junior Division Assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics were administered at all publicly funded elementary schools in Ontario by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). The primary assessments are written by children in grade 3 and the junior assessments are written by children in grade 6. These assessments are conducted by EQAO and provide an indication of each student’s achievement of the knowledge and skills at key points in their primary and junior education. Detailed results of student achievement on 2014‐2015 EQAO can be viewed at www.eqao.com. CARDINAL NEWMAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: PERCENTAGE OF ALL STUDENTS AT OR ABOVE THE

Staff continue to implement research‐based high‐yield strategies and demonstrate commitment to learning at divisional discussion meetings and other opportunities for co‐planning and co‐teaching. Staff continue to receive support through our POD work with our Special Assignment Teachers. Focus on numeracy will continue, as it will throughout the board and province. Literacy support will continue with focus on guided reading, guided practice and word study as opposed to rote spelling. There will be increased focus on inquiry‐based learning and less emphasis on teacher‐directed learning. SCHOOL FOCUS AND COLLABORATIVE INQUIRY Our school focus this year will be on building “Collaborative Inquiry” (staff and students working together) while focusing on the development of learning skills and growth mindsets. Growth mindset is a belief that a learner’s abilities can grow and are not fixed. Inquiry‐based learning is an approach to teaching and learning that places students’ questions, ideas and observations at the centre of the learning experience. Studies show that student achievement improves enormously when students are engaged in collaborative inquiry. Our school’s collaborative focus for 2015‐2016 is: “If we continue to model a growth mindset, through educator collaboration, as we focus on inquiry practices [in MATH, FSL, NM, ETC.] and the explicit teaching of learning skills, then student engagement and achievement will improve.” At school, teachers and students will work together to construct a list of behaviours and habits for each Learning Skill. Each list will be written in kid‐friendly language to help students understand each Learning Skill better. This will give students an understanding of how each Learning Skill can be applied inside and outside of school. The school will focus on one of the six Learning Skills each month. The students will learn the indicators for each skill and what learning habits they need to continue to develop to lead them toward success. PICTURES WITH SANTA CLAUS On the morning of Tuesday December 15th, students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 are invited to take a picture with Santa, free of charge. Students are encouraged to wear red and green on this day. Only students with signed permission from their parents/guardians will be able to have their pictures taken with Santa. Christmas cookies will also be presold from December 2nd to December 9th for $1.00 to all students in the school, which will be delivered right after lunch on December 15th. A permission form will follow shortly with more details about this fun filled event. X MOVEMENT VISITS CARDINAL NEWMAN SCHOOL On December 1st – December 3rd, X Movement will visit Cardinal Newman School to facilitate their X Dance Program with our students. X Dance provides students through imaginative storylines, playful characters and explorative experiences of music and cultures from around the world, an opportunity to discover dance in an energizing and inspiring way. Each class (Grades 1‐8) will have 3 lessons with the X Movement Energizers. They will return for Aussie X games in May 2016. CARDINAL NEWMAN WATER BOTTLES We are very grateful to our Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC) for their generous and eco‐conscious donation of Cardinal Newman water bottles to each of our students earlier this year. The bottles were purchased through a board approved supplier and are BPA free. The bottles recently distributed are a great way to reduce use of disposable water bottles; however, are not intended for long term use. To that end, CSAC would like to invite students to exchange the red Cardinal Newman water bottle for a stainless steel water bottle – free of charge. Details for the water bottle exchange will be communicated through correspondence from our CSAC. The red plastic bottles will be returned to the supplier for recycling. Please note that all reusable water bottles should be washed with mild soap and hot water after each use. Water should not be left standing in water bottles as bacteria can build up. Once again, we thank our CSAC for their generosity and commitment to our school community. ECO NEWS Five eco committee students and Mrs. Valdivia, our new Eco Lead Teacher will have the opportunity to attend the Brampton East Family of Schools 3rd Eco Fest on November 27th at St. John Bosco. Students will experience four different workshops, some guest speakers and the opportunity to connect with other Eco students. With Special thanks to Mrs. Valdivia for taking the role of Eco Lead. A special thanks to Mrs. Abela‐Prins for her work as a member of the Eco Fest Planning Committee. DIVERSITY CLUB We are happy to announce that the Diversity Club which celebrates our differing abilities started meeting again for the 2015 ‐ 2016 school year in early October. The interest and turnout for this amazing club has continued to grow. Members of the diversity club have expressed a desire to build close relationships through promoting an atmosphere of inclusivity and making a difference in someone else's life. The club will be meeting 2 times per week during the lunch hour leading up to the “Arts Olympics" which will be held on December 16, 2015 at Notre Dame Secondary School in Brampton. Members of the club along with the students in the Needs Moderate class have been working hard at preparing our school banner, decorating t‐shirts, and learning sign language and a dance routine which will be presented at this year's “Arts Olympics”. The diversity club has welcomed guest speakers who have provided all diversity club members the opportunity to experience the differing abilities that people have to live with on a daily basis so that they can better understand the impact this can have on an individual’s daily life. After the “Arts Olympics” in December, we will go back to meeting once a week. A great big thank you to all members of the diversity club for their continued commitment to helping one another overcome barriers and for their continued commitment and enthusiasm to the goals of the Diversity Club. With heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Patterson, Mme Guglielmi and Mme Strazzeri for their leadership with this initiative. SNACK SHACK The Snack Shack will be reopening on January 4th, 2016. It will run on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. With special thanks to Mrs. Cicione, Mrs. Caputo‐Rostami, Mr. Nasato and Mrs. Mrs. Foster for their generosity in supporting this program. PRIMARY SOCCER INTRAMURAL Once again we are excited about the start‐up of the Soccer Intramurals for our grade 2 and 3 students. Permission forms will be made available closer to the end of the month, prior to the Christmas Break. The intramurals will begin in the New Year. More information to follow. With special thanks Mrs. Sztork for her leadership with this initiative. JUNIOR INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE The Junior Intramural Basketball League (AKA the D‐League) is taking place on Wednesdays for Grade 5 & 6 students. It should be wrapping up by early December. Thank you to the students who are making it a fun environment to play in, while demonstrating both their basketball and teamwork skills. JUNIOR AND INTERMEDIATE GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAMS Junior Girls Basketball: Our basketball season is underway! Our junior girls’ basketball team is hard at work preparing for our mini‐family tournament, which will be held at Cardinal Newman on February 16th. As stated in our permission letter home, our practices are being held in gym #2 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30‐1:10. Girls are encouraged to wear appropriate workout gear and appropriate footwear. A big thank you to all girls that participated in the try‐outs and a big thank you to the parents for supporting your daughters in their active participation! Intermediate Girls Basketball: A big thank you to all intermediate girls who participated in our try‐outs. Our intermediate girls’ basketball team has been selected. Regular practices will begin in December, following our volleyball season. MOVEMBER During November each year, the Movember Campaign is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in Canada and around the world. This campaign raises vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer. Thank you for your generous support of this cause. CATHOLIC SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETINGS Communication between home and school is greatly enhanced by parental involvement with the Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC). All parents/guardians are encouraged to come out to meetings and participate. The aim of the Catholic School Advisory Council is to promote the vision, values, sacramental life and Catholic practices of the Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School Board and the Catholic community it serves, and to advise the principal and the Board. Our Catholic School Advisory Council will be holding their meetings at 6:30 p.m. in the Library. All parents are invited to attend. Please see dates below: Future Meeting Dates Monday, November 30, 2015 (Christmas Social‐Decorating and Potluck) Monday, January 25, 2016 Monday, February 22, 2016 Monday, April 18, 2016 Tuesday, May 17, 2016 Tuesday, June 7, 2016 (Year‐End Social – Potluck) CATHOLIC SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL FUNDRAISER UPDATE We would like to thank everyone who participated in our Poinsettia and Angel Pins fundraiser this year. We had a great response from our community with many orders. A portion of the proceeds will go towards our Breakfast Club as well as other school initiatives. The pick‐up date for poinsettias is Friday December 11th between the times of 12:10 p.m. ‐ 1:10 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. ‐ 8:00 p.m. If you are in need of assistance with pick up, please email us at cncsac@gmail.com and we will do our best to accommodate. Thank you for supporting our Students and School. Merry Christmas! PIZZA AND SUBWAY LUNCHES Pizza Days continue to run on Tuesdays. The cost is $2.00. All profits from this fundraising initiative will go to support various school initiatives (classroom libraries, fees for tournaments, replace outdoor recess equipment, school presentations, etc.). With special thanks to Mrs. Dafoe for organizing Pizza days for our students. Mr. Sub will be supplying our subs again this year. We will have sub day on the 3rd Thursday of the month. Sub days for the 2015‐2016 school year are December 17th, January 21st, February 18th, March 24th, April 21st, May 19th, and June 16th. Order forms will be sent home each month. Please complete and submit order forms by the indicated due date on the form. With special thanks to Mrs. Machado for organizing Sub days for our students. YARD SUPERVISION A reminder to the parents and students that yard supervision does not begin until 9:00 a.m. Students who arrive early at school will have to remain outside. Some parents drop off their children as early as 8:45 a.m. This practice puts your children at risk. We respectfully remind you that it is your responsibility to ensure appropriate care for your children prior to 9:00 a.m. KISS AND RIDE The school’s Kiss and Ride Program is located at the front of the building. The “Kiss and Ride” lane is for stopping to drop off your child. It is NOT for parking in the morning. If you need to come into the school, please park in a designated parking spot. The parking authorities frequently make visits to our school and many members of our community have been ticketed with very expensive fines. For parents/guardians who wish to walk their child to the Kindergarten area, please park your car in the parking area. Please do not park in the Kiss and Ride area or the reserved parking spots. VISITORS AT THE SCHOOL & SAFE SCHOOLS ACCESS All visitors and parents are requested to enter the building through the front door and check in at the office. Please sign in, and obtain a pass if you plan to remain in the building for any reason during school hours. Please understand that during instructional time, teachers are not available to meet with you or to take phone calls. All messages or deliveries for students will be handled through the front office. Students are expected to enter and exit through their designated doors. FIRE DRILL & LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES Cardinal Newman School is required to conduct three fire drills in the fall and three in the spring. We will also be conducting two lockdown drills throughout the year. These drills are standard practice across the Board and ensure that in the event of a real emergency, our students and staff can respond quickly and appropriately. If you have any questions or concerns regarding these drills, please speak to your child’s teacher or the main office. THE ONLINE REPORTING TOOL The Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School board has developed a new way to help nurture a safe, caring and inclusive school environment. The Online Reporting Tool is intended for students in grades 3 – 8 who become aware of bullying incidents and negative behaviours. The student can simply ‘click’ on the link found on our school’s website to fill out the report. The report will then be directly emailed to the principal and vice‐principal to be dealt with accordingly. It is important to recognize that the Online Reporting Tool is an alternate reporting option. It is best practice to speak directly with a responsible adult at home and/or in the school. TRANSPORTATION BUS LOADING ZONE Please be reminded that the front of the school is designated as a “Bus Loading Zone”. Parents/guardians are not permitted to pick up or drop off students in this zone. The safety of the students is our priority. Please drop off or pick up students in the designated school parking lot or the “Kiss and Ride” area. Please ensure that your child rides the bus to which he or she has been assigned. If you wish to change your child’s bus, bus stop or have concerns about the bus schedule you must contact the Transportation (STOPR) department directly at (905) 890‐6000. It is a parental responsibility to ensure that kindergarten and Grade 1 students are met at the bus. If the bus driver does not see a parent or sitter at the scheduled bus stop, the child will be returned to school. DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR THE WEATHER Now that the colder weather is upon us, we respectfully remind you to ensure that your children come to school dressed warmly to participate in recess activities. When weather conditions are severe we may reduce the outdoor play time, or have indoor recess entirely, but fresh air and exercise are vital components for successful learning, so we will endeavour to have children play outside whenever possible. Help your children by having them come to school appropriately dressed with scarves, hats and mittens. As well, all students should have indoor footwear at school. This is essential in case of an emergency evacuation. The students will not have time to change their footwear. We also recommend that students keep extra clothing such as socks and pants at school in case their original clothing gets wet. INDOOR / OUTDOOR SHOES The students should have a pair of indoor shoes to wear at school in class and for gym. Outdoor shoes/ boots will be kept for outdoor use only and out of the classrooms in order to reduce the amount of dirt and mud brought indoors. This will assist our custodial staff in keeping the school clean. Thank you for your co‐operation. LATE ARRIVALS & EARLY DEPARTURES As in the past, we ask that you call the school on the days that your child will be absent or late. This is a safety precaution that can save precious moments should there ever be an emergency situation. We thank you for your continued support in following this procedure. If your child will be late or absent from school, it is very important that you notify the school before 9:00 a.m. by leaving a voice mail message on the attendance line at 905‐792‐
2268 and pressing 1, for the attendance voice mail. You should speak clearly and leave the child’s FIRST and LAST NAME, the teacher’s name, and the reason for the absence or lateness. Any student arriving at school late is required to come to the office to request a late slip. This allows us to change our attendance information, and mark your child late, rather than absent. It is very important that students arrive to school on time and ready to work, as late arrivals disrupt instructional activities and classroom routines. We respectfully request that whether students walk or are driven to school, that they are at school before the bell rings at 9:15 a.m. LUNCH HOUR During the lunch hour, all students who stay for lunch are expected to remain at school, and all students who go home for lunch are expected to go home for lunch. If there is a change in the regular lunch hour procedure for your child, parents/guardians are asked to provide the teacher with a note explaining the change. Student safety is essential at Cardinal Newman School. For this reason, students staying for lunch at school will not be permitted to go to the local plaza. We would like to remind you that the school is not equipped to provide lunches to students who are sent to school without a lunch. Please ensure that your child has a suitable lunch, every day. If you plan to deliver your child’s lunch to the school, please ensure that it is delivered before 12:10 p.m. and is left on the table outside the main office. LUNCHES BROUGHT TO THE OFFICE Please consider having your children bring their lunches with them in the morning as the Safe Schools Access Protocol may cause delays in your child receiving lunch. If you are bringing a lunch for your child to pick up from the office, please ensure that it is labelled with your child’s name, teacher’s name and room number. Please instruct your child to come to the front lobby and pick it up from the lunch table. In keeping your child’s safety at heart, students will not be permitted to go out of the building to get their lunches. In order to avoid interruptions to instructional time, students will not be called from class. SEVERE FOOD ALLERGIES Peanut and Other Life‐Threatening Allergies, Sabrina’s Law Anaphylaxis Reaction As we begin the new school year, we would like to inform you that Cardinal Newman School is an allergen‐aware school. There are pupils in attendance at our school who suffer from severe and life‐threatening allergies to certain foods, such as peanut and tree nut products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause severe and life‐threatening reactions. Anaphylaxis is a severe and life threatening allergic reaction. The most common allergen triggers are food, insect stings, medications, exercise and latex. An anaphylactic reaction involves symptoms from two or more body systems. We require your continued cooperation in sending foods to school with your child that are free from peanuts, nuts or their by‐products, and nut‐substitute products. We cannot guarantee that any classroom is nut free, but we are attempting to minimize exposure and keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible. We appreciate your help and support in this important issue. We ask you to please refrain from sending birthday and special occasion edible treats into your child’s class. Instead, perhaps you could recognize a special event by sending in a non‐edible treat e.g., pencils, stickers, notebooks. Another alternative is to commemorate your child’s birthday by purchasing a book for donation to our school library. Should you wish to do so, we will be happy to place a sticker with a sentiment similar to: “Donated by Noah Brooks in honour of his 5th birthday on October 18th, 2015”. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding. If your child has been diagnosed with a severe allergy and you have not notified the school, please do so immediately. There are forms that must be completed. Please speak with our secretaries, Mrs. Cosentino and Mrs. Machado to obtain the requisite paperwork. Your continued cooperation in support of our efforts to create a safe and healthy learning environment for all is greatly appreciated! PAPERLESS SNACKS/LUNCHES Students and staff are encouraged to be environmentally friendly by reducing the amount of paper and plastic waste from lunches and snacks. Last year we received GOLD level standing ECO school certification. Students will have an opportunity to eat snacks before or after recess. Wasps, bees and birds continue to be a problem in the schoolyard, thus snacks will not be permitted in the playground. HEAD INJURIES Even when it may appear to be insignificant, we are obliged to inform parents and guardians of all reported head injuries occurring at school. We do this in recognition of the potential danger of any injury involving the head area. Our interest is not to alarm you, but to keep you informed. Please remind your child to let a staff member know if they bump their head or if they get hurt at school. PEDICULOSIS – HEAD LICE Pediculosis is not considered a health problem because it is not a communicable disease. However, from time to time incidents of pediculosis occur in any school. It is recommended that parents inspect their children’s hair, especially if persistent itching and scratching of the scalp is noticed. Please inform the school if you discover an infestation. Your pharmacist may suggest treatment information. Remind your child that it is not appropriate to share other children’s combs and/or headgear, hats, etc. MEDICATION We have a number of students in the school with health conditions requiring specialized medication or supervision. In order for students to have access to medicine on a daily basis or for us to store medication in the school, your doctor MUST complete the required form. Please ask Mrs. Cosentino or Mrs. Machado for the GF035 should you wish for us to store your child’s prescription or doctor authorized medication. All medication of this sort is to be stored in the school office. We take this precaution so that medication does not fall into the wrong hands. If your child has a medical condition, please notify the school office. CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS All volunteers having direct contact with students are required to provide a C.B.C. (Criminal Background Check). The new board policy has been expanded and includes volunteering on class trips, in classrooms, Catholic School Advisory Council, etc. If there are any community members wishing to volunteer, please visit the school office to pick up the necessary volunteer criminal reference check paperwork. EXCURSIONS AND FIELD TRIPS Classes occasionally take educational trips to extend learning opportunities in curriculum areas. Teachers need to follow appropriate Board procedures. A limited number of trips may be planned by teachers. By LAW the school must have on file permission forms, which must be signed by the parents/guardians. If, on the day of the excursion, your child has not returned his/her forms, and the parent/guardian cannot come into the school to sign the permission forms, the student will remain at the school. Students will be reminded by their teachers about this policy prior to the trip taking place. Staff will offer generous timelines for return of trip permission forms and funds in order that parents/guardians have significant opportunity to submit all paperwork and fees. PARENT EVENING TO SUPPORT THE TRANSITION OF CHILDREN WITH DIFFERING ABILITIES INTO KINDERGARTEN 2016 There will be an information session for parent(s)/guardian(s) of children with differing abilities including vision, hearing, autism, physical/medical and/or developmental delays, who are transitioning to Kindergarten in September 2016. Catholic Global Learning Centre North Parent/Guardian Interest Survey
November 2015 Catholic Global Learning Centre North Parent/Guardian Interest Survey: November 22 – December 5, 2015 The Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School Board is investigating the possibility of opening an additional regional elementary Catholic Global Learning Centre at an existing Dufferin‐Peel Catholic elementary school located north of Highway 401. The new centre will be modelled after St. James Catholic Global Learning Centre in south‐east Mississauga. Like the St. James Catholic Global Learning Centre, the learning experience to be offered at the proposed Catholic Global Learning Centre North embraces a global focus. Modelled after an internationally recognized program, the Catholic Global Learning Centre North will teach the Ontario Curriculum via an integrated, inquiry‐based approach aligned with the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations. All students attending this school will participate in this program. Once the program has been established, the plan is to apply for formal certification as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program and Middle Years Program site. Interested parents and guardians are asked to complete an online survey that can be accessed from the board website’s main page at www.dpcdsb.org or, also, from any Dufferin‐Peel elementary school website. Participation in this survey is voluntary and parents may choose to stop completing the survey at any time. Parents will not be asked to identify themselves or their child/children. The information collected through the survey is for planning purposes only and will be used to inform recommendations about the potential site and more details which will follow at a later date. Please note that the survey closes on December 5, 2015. Board Policy 24.00 ‐ Access to Elementary Regional Programs of Choice The process for accessing elementary regional programs of choice must be equitable for all eligible pupils within the Board’s jurisdiction. If applications received by the due date exceed the available pupil places allotted to the regional program, a lottery process specific to the regional program will be activated to fill available pupil places. All eligible applicants, including siblings of pupils currently registered in the regional program, will participate in the lottery process.
