As we gather in darkened churches to celebrate the Easter Vigil, we are reminded of the power of one candle. The Paschal candle lit from the Easter fire has the ability to illumine the entire church and banish the darkness. From that one candle the flame is shared and diffused throughout the worshipers until hundreds of reflections of that light bathe the entire church in a warm glow. All of which is a powerful symbol of the power of the resurrected Christ to cast out the darkness of our lives. Part of the human experience to this day is times of darkness when we lose our way. Where do we find the guidance to help us get back on track? A helping hand and a kind word shared can be the sparks that provide light where before there was none. This Easter celebration of new life, of light overcoming darkness gives us the hope and faith that will show us the way throughout this coming year. This journey is one that we walk together. Let us reflect the light of the Easter candle to all those we meet, but especially to those who are looking for a way out of darkness. Superintendent

4 VIRTUE FOR April: LOVE This month we will celebrate the virtue of love. Jesus made one lesson clear above all other lessons: the lesson to love. Love is not about us. It is about forgetting ourselves and looking out for the good of the other. That’s what Jesus did. He forgot about himself on purpose. He chose to give up his life for the good of others…for us! Becoming a truly loving person is challenging. It takes prayer and concentration to get used to making little sacrifices for the good of others. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops have decreed that, in our rite, the sacrament of Confirmation shall be conferred at an age determined by the diocese. The Archdiocese of Toronto has notified us that the elementary school grade for candidates for confirmation is to be moved from Grade 8 to Grade 7, effective September 8 2015. This means that, in the spring of 2016, Grade 7 and 8 students will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. GRADE EIGHT GRADUATION We will be celebrating the learning journey of our Grade 8 students on June 24th. The day will begin with a luncheon and dance for the students, followed by a graduation ceremony at Speranza Banquet Hall. EQAO In May, the Ontario Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) will conduct its annual province‐wide testing of knowledge and skills in reading, writing and mathematics of grade 3 and 6 students throughout the publicly funded school systems. The tests for Grade 3 students and for Grade 6 students will take place between May 25th and June 5th. Parents and guardians are encouraged to avoid scheduling any doctor’s appointments or any other appointments that would take your child out of school during the testing dates. Details regarding more specific dates will be forthcoming from classroom teachers. EQAO AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM The EQAO After School Tutoring Program is underway for eligible students in Grades three and six. The tutoring program provides students in grades three and six with additional support as they prepare for their EQAO assessment. CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK Throughout Ontario, we celebrate Catholic Education during the week of May 3rd to May 8th, 2015. Catholic Education Week begins on a Sunday to highlight the partnership that remains the foundation of Catholic education between our Catholic schools and local Catholic parishes. Throughout Catholic Education Week, we ask you to reflect on the significance of Catholic education’s presence and contribution in our Church, and in our society. The theme chosen for Catholic Education Week 2015 is “Exploring Paths of Joy”. The themes for each day are as follows: Monday May 4th “Walking Together and Sharing our Story”, Tuesday May 5th “Opening the Scriptures”, Wednesday May 6th “Welcoming Others to the Table”, Thursday May 7th “Recognizing Jesus in the Breaking of the Bread” and Friday May 8th “Proclaiming the Good News”. X MOVEMENT VISITS CARDINAL NEWMAN SCHOOL On May 7th and May 8th, X Movement will visit Cardinal Newman School to facilitate their Aussie X program with our students. Aussie X is an in‐school, camp, community sport and cultural program. Through the sports of AUSSIE RULES FOOTBALL, CRICKET, NETBALL and RUGBY, they promote the powerful life lessons of Havin’ a Go (trying new things), Goodonya Mate (praise others), You Little Rippa (celebrate Havin’ a Go). The program levels the playing field so that all kids, no matter their level of skill or ability, can enjoy the feeling of getting active. BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS On April 7th, to support our Breakfast Club, students are asked to bring in a donation in any amount. Suggested donation is $2. Their names will be entered into the Breakfast of Champions draw. Students who are selected with have the opportunity to play dodgeball (primary and junior) or floor hockey (intermediate) against our community police officers. A special thanks to Mrs. Moniz‐Baptista, Ms. Forgione and Mrs. Sztork for organizing this event. A heartfelt thank you to their team who devotes many volunteer hours each week for this service to our students. NUMERACY NIGHT ~ A HUGE SUCCESS! Thank you to the many parents and guardians who came out to join us for our Family Numeracy Evening! The evening of March 4th provided parents and guardians with a unique opportunity to learn ways to support their children’s learning in mathematics. Several websites and resources were shared with participants to help them support their children with mathematics at home. Some of the websites included the following: http://www.eqao.com/ http://oame.on.ca/mathies/ https://homeworkhelp.ilc.org/ http://www.glencoe.com/sites/common_assets/mathematics/ebook_assets/vmf/VMF‐Interface.html With heartfelt thanks, once again, to our wonderful staff who generously volunteered many hours planning this event. A MESSAGE FROM OUR ECO TEAM How can parents help The Cardinal Newman Eco Team?  Send in clean, dry milk bags (they will be used to make mats for countries in need)  Send in used batteries or old cell phones for recycling  Buy reusable containers and pack your child a litterless lunch everyday  Encourage your child to boomerang (take home) compostable items from their lunch Thank you for your help and cooperation in making our school Greener! Thank you to Mrs. Abela‐Prins, Mme Strazzeri, Mr. Nasato, Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Clarke, our DRAPCE representative on C.S.A.C. for their work with this initiative. CARD CLUB The Card Club has been a great success within our Cardinal Newman community! This initiative continues to produce a large lunch hour crowd. Sometimes in these days of computers, iPads, video consoles, and other expensive toys we forget that a simple pack of cards (or two) can provide hours of fun. Cards are inexpensive, easily portable and endlessly adaptable. Child friendly card games such as Go Fish, Crazy 8's, memory and Prez have been popular choices among the club participants. Don't forget, new joiners are always welcome! With special thanks to Mr. Palmieri for his leadership with this initiative! DIVERSITY CLUB The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. The diversity club continues to foster relationships through dance, music, board game, sign language, art, social and self‐reflection activities. We are amazed at how the students in the diversity club continue to show enthusiasm, commitment and willingness to participate in our weekly rendez‐vous. Our motto is "We Are One". With special thanks to Mrs. Patterson, Madame Guglielmi and Mrs. Roussy for their leadership with this wonderful opportunity for our students! JUNIOR AND INTERMEDIATE BASKETBALL Congratulations to our basketball teams! The students have been working diligently over many lunch hours.
The junior boys' basketball season was a wonderful one! The boys were crowned Brampton North East Champions again and advanced to the DPCDSB Championship Finals with an impressive 11‐1 record. They were one of only eight teams (out of over 120) to succeed that far. The boys played hard and fell just short of competing in the title game. The school is very proud of them and their fine efforts. Well done, team! The intermediate boys' basketball season has begun in fine fashion. The boys just returned from a spectacular performance at Notre Dame's G‐Zilla Tournament. The team fell just shy of the title game after a heart‐breaking double‐overtime loss in the semi‐finals. The game was a thrilling one with the team even hitting a last second shot near half court to force the game into the second overtime period. It surely was a magical day! Now, the team preps for their school board tournament which begins in two weeks. Good luck, boys! With heartfelt thanks to our Junior Girls’ coaches Ms. Moniz‐Baptista and Ms. D’Aguanno and our Junior Boys’ coach, Mr. Zubac. Their tireless efforts and dedication have afforded our students these wonderful opportunities. INTERMEDIATE LEADERSHIP TEAM Our Intermediate Leadership Team is currently working on a school yearbook. They are in the midst of organizing a contest for the front cover of the yearbook. More details to follow. GRADE 8 GIRLS’ GROUP Cardinal Newman Catholic Elementary School is pleased to present the "Grade 8 Girls’ Group" which has garnered a wonderful response and is set to begin the first week of March. This after‐school program will promote confidence, positive communication, stress management strategies and introduce ways to support a healthy lifestyle. Each session will focus on a particular theme and the girls involved will work collaboratively on arts based activities. The Girls’ Group was made possible through the generous funding from a Dufferin‐Peel Innovation Grant, as well as the profits made through the Cookie Crew Treat Thursday program. Thank you to all the girls who have registered for this program! We are very grateful to the staff who run this program: our Grade 8 teacher, Ms. Sequeira, our Social Worker, Ms. Budd and our Child and Youth Worker, Ms. Farra. BOYS, BOOKS & BASKETBALL PROGRAM This year some of our intermediate and primary students will have the opportunity to participate in our Boys, Books & Basketball program. This program will allow some of our intermediate and primary boys to work on their reading together. By reading and discussing books together they can help develop important reading skills such as decoding, reading fluency and reading comprehension. After spending some time reading, the boys will get to cooperate and develop team building skills through a game of basketball. This will create a great leadership opportunity for a number of our intermediate boys and a great mentoring opportunity for some of our primary boys. With special thanks to Ms. Moniz‐
Baptista and Mrs. Kastoris for their leadership with this opportunity. LOCKS AND LOCKERS All students who have a locker assigned to them should have a combination lock on their locker. This ensures that all personal belongings are securely stored away. In 2015‐2016, we will be offering combination locks at a subsidized cost of less than $5. These combination locks will come with a master key that will be kept in the office in cases where students forget their combinations. Further details to follow. THE ONLINE REPORTING TOOL The Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School board has developed a new way to help nurture a safe, caring and inclusive school environment. The Online Reporting Tool is intended for students in grades 3 – 8 who become aware of bullying incidents and negative behaviours. The student can simply ‘click’ on the link found on our school’s website to fill out the report. The report will then be directly emailed to the principal and vice‐principal to be dealt with accordingly. It is important to recognize that the Online Reporting Tool is an alternate reporting option. It is best practice to speak directly with a responsible adult at home and/or in the school. MOVING? We are beginning the process of staffing and organizing classes for the 2015‐2016 school year. If you are planning on moving out of the Cardinal Newman School area, and are not returning to Cardinal Newman School in September, please advise the Office as soon as possible. CLASS PLACEMENTS
We will be making up class lists for the next school year in the coming weeks. In each class, we strive for a balance of learning needs, and a cross‐section of abilities. The current teachers of a grade, support staff and administrator all take part in the process. If you, as a parent or guardian, wish to provide input into the process, please take into consideration the following guidelines: 



Input must be in written form to the principal by Friday May 1st, 2015 Frame your request in terms of educational contexts (example learning needs/style). Please note that letters which cite the names of individual teachers cannot be considered. Information from all sources will be pooled to assist us in making the most appropriate placement for your child. Thank you for your cooperation. iENGAGE – BULLYING PREVENTION FOR PARENTS Holy Spirit Elementary Catholic School Council hosts their PRO Grant‐funded presentation of Anthony McLean and his bullying message on Thursday April 9th, 2015 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Anthony delivers a powerful presentation for parents looking for practical strategies to keep their kids safe, this upbeat and interactive presentation is packed with useful resources. Some of the areas he will touch upon include: (i) How to protect our kids from bullies (without turning our kids into bullies!); (ii) How to get kids to open up and talk about what’s happening at school; (iii) How to break apart cliques and (iv) How to keep kids safe online. Location: Holy Spirit Elementary School, 25 Bloomsbury Ave, Brampton, ON, L6P 1W9. Please call the school for more information 905‐794‐8039 and RSVP at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BZ27SZB CATHOLIC SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETINGS Our Catholic School Advisory Council will be holding their meetings at 7:00 p.m. in the Library. All parents are invited to attend. Please see dates below: April 7, 2015 May 4, 2015 June 15, 2015 ~ 6:30 p.m. Social Gathering NEWS FROM YOUR CATHOLIC SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL We are preparing for our Play Day which will be held on June 19, 2015 with a rain date of June 22, 2015. Our theme this year is “PLAY”. We are calling out to all our parents. We need your help! We are looking for volunteers to assist us in making this year’s play day the best! Volunteers are needed from 9:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please ensure you have a volunteer Criminal Background check completed and handed in to the school. Our Catholic School Advisory Council is working hard on our new Parent Resource Library. There will be a variety of books available to our parents. A letter will be sent home with your child regarding access and will detail the books available. VOLUNTEERING ON TRIPS & AT SCHOOL Volunteers working in the school and supervising any school trips MUST have a valid Criminal Background Check. The original must be brought to the main office for verification and photocopying by office staff. A copy will be kept on file at the school and the original returned to you. Application forms for Criminal Background Checks can be obtained through the school office. Volunteers must complete the application and take to the police station for processing. ANNUAL OFFENCE DECLARATION FOR VOLUNTEERS WITH A VALID CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK All volunteers with a valid Criminal Background Check on file are required to complete an annual offence declaration. Please complete the attached Annual Offence Declaration for Volunteers form and return it to the school office. YARD SUPERVISION A reminder to the parents and students that yard supervision does not begin until 9:00 a.m. Students who arrive early at school will have to remain outside. Some parents drop off their children as early as 8:45 a.m. This practice puts your children at risk. We respectfully remind you that it is your responsibility to ensure appropriate care for your children prior to 9:00 a.m. PIZZA AND SUBWAY LUNCHES Pizza Days continue to run on Tuesdays. The cost is $2.00. 2015 Sub Days are April 16th, May 21st, and June 18th. Order forms will be sent home each month. SEVERE FOOD ALLERGIES As has been mentioned previously, we continue to ask for your co‐cooperation in keeping our school safe for all our students and staff. Several students and staff in our school suffer from severe, life threatening allergy to all nuts, peanuts, nut products, shellfish, etc. This is a medical condition that causes severe reaction to certain allergens that can result in death within minutes. Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, we require your continued cooperation in sending foods to school with your child that are free from peanuts, nuts or their by‐products, and nut‐substitute products. We cannot guarantee that any classroom is nut free, but we are attempting to minimize exposure and keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible. We appreciate your help and support in this important issue. We ask you to please refrain from sending birthday and special occasion edible treats into your child’s class. Instead, perhaps you could recognize a special event by sending in a non‐edible treat e.g., pencils, stickers, notebooks. Another alternative is to commemorate your child’s birthday by purchasing a book for donation to our school library. Should you wish to do so, we will be happy to place a sticker with a sentiment similar to: “Donated by Noah Brooks in honour of his 5th birthday on October 18th, 2015”. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding. LATE ARRIVALS & EARLY DEPARTURES As in the past, we ask that you call the school on the days that your child will be absent or late. This is a safety precaution that can save precious moments should there ever be an emergency situation. We thank you for your continued support in following this procedure. If your child will be late or absent from school, it is very important that you notify the school before 9:00 a.m. by leaving a voice mail message on the attendance line at 905‐792‐2268 and pressing 1, for the attendance voice mail. You should speak clearly and leave the child’s FIRST and LAST NAME, the teacher’s name, and the reason for the absence or lateness. Any student arriving at school late is required to come to the office to request a late slip. This allows us to change our attendance information, and mark your child late, rather than absent. It is very important that students arrive to school on time and ready to work, as late arrivals disrupt instructional activities and classroom routines. We respectfully request that whether students walk or are driven to school, that they are at school before the bell rings at 9:15 a.m. AFTER‐SCHOOL: BUS AND NON‐BUS STUDENT AREAS Bus students are reminded that they MUST have their bus tag attached to their backpack in an easily visible location so teachers can check as you board the bus. Also, bus students MUST line up, FDK‐Grade 8, in front of their assigned pylon in gym 1 IMMEDIATELY at the bell. Students who fail to follow this rule may have bus privileges suspended. Non‐bus students waiting to be picked up at the end of the day are reminded that they must wait in the fenced courtyard area in front of the library windows. Presently there is a great deal of student traffic causing congestion at the front of the school. NO students should be waiting anywhere on the sidewalk area in front of the school. The sidewalk area must be clear for the safe boarding of bus students. PLASP CHILD CARE SERVICES PLASP Child Care Services operates Before and After School Programs at this school. The Before School Program operates from 7:30 a.m. until school start. A nutritious breakfast is served daily. The After School Program runs from the end of the school day until 6:00 p.m. Children participate in recreational activities, are served a nutritious snack daily and have time for homework. Fee assistance is available for those who qualify. Visit www.plasp.com and register your child online today. Fractions
Learning about fractions extends
childrens’ understanding of our
number system. While whole numbers
represent quantities of whole units,
fractions signify parts of whole units
or parts of sets. Although fractions
are all around us, learning about
fractions is difficult for some
children. Identifying fractions in our
environments makes them meaningful
and easier to visualize.

Whatdowemeanby“mindset”?
Mindsets are the assumptions and expectations we have for
ourselves and others. These attitudes guide our behavior and
influence our responses to daily events.

Family Math Activity K – 3:
Big Ideas:

A fraction shows the relationship between
a part and a whole.
With your child, gather several similarly shaped objects,
such as a piece of paper, a towel, a placemat, a picture
frame, a magazine and a book.

Ask your child to show you one half of each object, perhaps
by using a ruler to mark the halfway point. This is an
opportunity for your child to see that fractional portions
must be of equal size.

Extension: Ask your child to show you one fourth of each
object.

Conversation About Your
Money Decisions!
Let’s discuss some factors affecting “Money
Decisions”…
 Ask your child to keep a log for one week of all the times, instances, or circumstances that he/she has an encounter with money (e.g., a subway ride, buying gum at a store, going to the bank or ATM, buying an app).  Ask your child to make a list of all the ways in which money enters into his/her daily life.  Discuss with your child his/her money encounters (e.g., what was the total value of your money encounters?) Note: Consider factors that affect money
decisions: emotions, friends and peers,
customs, traditions, habits, family
members, latest styles and fads,
advertising, incentives, and personal
values.

of eggs eaten (5/12) and the remaining eggs (7/12)?
