VIRTUE for JANUARY: Self‐Control Self‐Control is regulating your thoughts and actions so that you stop any pressures from within or without and act the way you know and feel is right. Developing loving habits helps us to respond lovingly to others in our choices and actions. God wants us do what we know and feel is right. A person with self‐control:  is patient  knows how to wait his/her turn  can calm him/herself down and think before reacting to situations  knows how to avoid physical aggression (hitting, kicking, pushing, etc.)  can think things through 1

If your child has a severe allergic reaction to peanuts, peanut byproducts, bee/wasp stings etc., please let the school know as soon as possible. It is essential that the information you provide is accurate, and up to date. There are various forms which need to be completed by you and your family doctor if it is necessary to store an Epi‐pen at school. There are some students in our school with a severe, life threatening allergy to peanuts and nuts. This is a medical condition that causes severe reaction to certain allergens that can result in death within minutes. Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, we require your continued cooperation in sending foods to school with your child that are free from peanuts, nuts or their byproducts, and nut substitute products. We cannot guarantee that any classroom is nut free, but we are attempting to minimize exposure and keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible. We appreciate your help and support in this important issue. We ask you to please refrain from sending birthday and special occasion edible treats into your child’s class. Instead, perhaps you could recognize a special event by sending in a non‐edible treat e.g., pencils, stickers, notebooks. The book fair will also be open Thursday February 5th from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, during the parent interview evening. The last day of the book fair is Friday February 6th, from 9:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Every purchase benefits our students and school. Hope to see you there! LATE ARRIVALS As in the past, we ask that you call the school on the days that your child will be absent or late. This is a safety precaution that can save precious moments should there ever be an emergency situation. We thank you for your continued support in following this procedure. If your child will be late or absent from school, it is very important that you notify the school before 9:00 a.m. by leaving a voice mail message on the attendance line at 905‐792‐2268 and pressing 1, for the attendance voice mail. You should speak clearly and leave the child’s FIRST and LAST NAME, the teacher’s name, and the reason for the absence or lateness. Any student arriving at school late is required to come to the office to request a late slip. This allows us to change our attendance information, and mark your child late, rather than absent. We would also like to ask for your cooperation with afternoon dismissal. The last 30‐45 minutes of the day is extremely important in the classroom. If you need to pick your child up earlier than 3:45, we ask that you please send a note to your child’s teacher in the morning, advising them of the time required for pick up and the reason. We cannot interrupt classes during this time, for unannounced departures. DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR THE WEATHER Now that the colder weather is upon us we respectfully remind you to ensure that your children come to school dressed warmly to participate in recess activities. When weather conditions are severe we may reduce the outdoor play time, or have indoor recess entirely, but fresh air and exercise are vital components for successful learning, so we will endeavour to have children play outside whenever possible. Help your children by having them come to school appropriately dressed with scarves, hats and mittens. As well, all students should have indoor footwear at school. This is essential in case of an emergency evacuation. The students will not have time to change their footwear. We also recommend that students keep extra clothing such as socks and pants at school in case their original clothing gets wet. INDOOR / OUTDOOR SHOES The students should have a pair of indoor shoes to wear at school in class and for gym. Outdoor shoes/ boots will be kept for outdoor use only and out of the classrooms in order to reduce the amount of dirt and mud brought indoors. This will assist our custodial staff in keeping the school clean. Thank you for your co‐operation. INCLEMENT WEATHER CANCELLATIONS During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced on the following radio and television stations:  VIRGIN RADIOFM99.9  FM Z103.5  FM93.1  CHUM AM1050  CFTR AM680  FM Q107  CFNY FM102.1/AM640  CHIN FM100.7/AM1540  CJCL AM590  CBC99.1  CHFI FM98.1  CITYPULSE  CFRB AM1010  GLOBAL NEWS  EZ ROCK FM97.3  CTV  CJBC (FR) AM860 We will be communicating one of four standard messages to the radio stations. ANDREW, ST. BENEDICT AND ST. PETER ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND R.F. HALL SECONDARY SCHOOL ARE CANCELLED FOR TODAY.” 2.“THE DUFFERIN‐PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD BUSES AND THE PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD BUSES IN THE TOWN OF CALEDON AND THE COUNTY OF DUFFERIN ARE CANCELLED”. This means that all runs listed under announcement #l PLUS the following are cancelled. All schools in the Town of Caledon and all school runs that begin in the Town of Caledon. Individual schools will be notified if this cancellation affects their school. 3.“THE DUFFERIN‐PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD AND THE PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD BUSES ARE CANCELLED.” This means that: ALL Transportation services provided by the Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School Board and The Peel District School Board, including buses, vans and taxis have been cancelled for the entire day. 4.“THE SCHOOLS AND OFFICES OF BOTH THE DUFFERIN‐PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD AND THE PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD ARE CLOSED.” This means that: ALL Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School Board ad Peel District School Board schools and offices are closed to all students and staff. BUS INFORMATION Please check the Region of Peel’s Transportation Department’s websites (www.stopr.ca and https://businfo.stopr.ca/) to check for delays and cancellations. All concerns and complaints regarding bus transportation are to be made directly to the S.T.O.P.R. at 905‐890‐0614. AFTER‐SCHOOL: BUS AND NON‐BUS STUDENT AREAS Bus students are reminded that they MUST have their bus tag attached to their backpack in an easily visible location so teachers can check as you board the bus. Also, bus students MUST line up, FDK‐Grade 8, in front of their assigned pylon in Gym 1 IMMEDIATELY at the bell. Students who fail to follow this rule may have bus privileges suspended. Non‐bus students waiting to be picked up at the end of the day are reminded that they must wait in the fenced courtyard area in front of the library windows. Presently there is a great deal of student traffic causing congestion at the front of the school. NO students should be waiting anywhere on the sidewalk area in front of the school. The sidewalk area must be clear for the safe boarding of bus students. VOLUNTEERING ON TRIPS & AT SCHOOL The D.P.C.D.S.B. policy is that volunteers working in the school and supervising any school trips MUST have a valid Criminal Background Check. The original must be brought to the main office for verification and photocopying by office staff. A copy will be kept on file at the school and the original returned to you. Application forms for Criminal Background Checks can be obtained through the school office. Volunteers must complete the application and take to the police station for processing. SNOW AND ICE As snow and ice are a reality in the winter months, we review our rules about NOT throwing snow or ice at school regularly. Please review with your child the dangers of this and that it is NOT allowed at school. The school rule is that snow stays on the ground – no snowballs, kicking snow or other any other activity with snow or ice that could be harmful. The safety of all of our students is our number one priority. Using snow to make forts or snow people is a wonderful way to enjoy winter. Students are encouraged to be respectful of what others have created. It should be noted that these structures are temporary and staff on supervision duty are not expected to help safeguard these as their primary responsibility is to ensure student safety. PLASP CHILD CARE SERVICES PLASP Child Care Services operates Before and After School Programs at this school. The Before School Program operates from 7:30 a.m. until school start. A nutritious breakfast is served daily. The After School Program runs from the end of the school day until 6:00 p.m. Children participate in recreational activities, are served a nutritious snack daily and have time for homework. Fee assistance is available for those who qualify. Visit www.plasp.com and register your child online today.
