During Advent, we recall the history of God's people and reflect on how the prophecies and promises of the Old Testament were fulfilled. This gives us a background for the present and future of our world. Pot Luck will begin at 6:30 p.m. and following immediately after will be the decorating of the front entrance. If you would like to join us please email us at parentcouncil2014@gmail.com MOVEMBER During November each year, the Movember Campaign is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in Canada and around the world. This campaign raises vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer. Throughout the month of November, Mr. Moroniewicz’s Grade 6 students, made regular announcements to raise student awareness about Movember, and the importance of addressing men’s health. Thank you for your generous support of this cause. Thank you also to our Staff Social Committee who organized a pot‐luck lunch for staff where additional funds were raised. CHRISTMAS BASKETS This year the staff and students of Cardinal Newman will be participating in the yearly Christmas Charity. Staff and students are encouraged to donate toiletries or offer financial donations. All money collected will be used to buy toys, hats, mittens and food for needy families within our community. A letter from our Christmas Basket Committee will be sent home soon with more details. INTERMEDIATE LEADERSHIP TEAM Our Intermediate Leadership Team is made up of ten Intermediate students, two Intermediate students from each of our Intermediate classes. This amazing group of students have displayed outstanding leadership in planning various activities at Cardinal Newman, including our Remembrance Day Liturgy and Spirit Week during the month of December. Their leadership and positive attitude are a gift! YARD SUPERVISION A reminder to the parents and students that yard supervision does not begin until 9:00 a.m. Students that arrive early at school will have to remain outside. Some parents drop off their children as early as 8:45. This practice puts your children at risk. We respectfully remind you that it is your responsibility to ensure appropriate care for your children prior to 9:00 a.m. ECO‐TEAM: CARDINAL NEWMAN Our school Eco Team has several committees that have been hard at work. The Litterless Lunch Committee, Lights Out Committee, Recycling Committee, and G.O.O.S.E. Bin Committee. We are always looking for committed members, students can pick up an application in room 10. Help keep Newman Green! PIZZA AND SUBWAY LUNCHES Pizza Days continue to run on Tuesdays. The cost is $2.00. Sub Days are December 18th, January 22nd, February 19th, March 26th, April 16th, May 21st, and June 18th. Order forms will be sent home each month NUT/PEANUT/OTHERALLERGYALERT
If your child has a severe allergic reaction to peanuts, peanut byproducts, bee/wasp stings etc., please let the school know as soon as possible. It is essential that the information you provide is accurate, and up to date. There are various forms which need to be completed by you and your family doctor if it is necessary to store an Epi‐pen at school. There are some students in our school with a severe, life threatening allergy to peanuts and nuts. This is a medical condition that causes severe reaction to certain allergens that can result in death within minutes. Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, we require your continued cooperation in sending foods to school with your child that are free from peanuts, nuts or their byproducts, and nut substitute products. We cannot guarantee that any classroom is nut free, but we are attempting to minimize exposure and keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible. We appreciate your help and support in this important issue. We ask you to please refrain from sending birthday and special occasion edible treats into your child’s class. Instead, perhaps you could recognize a special event by sending in a non‐edible treat e.g., pencils, stickers, notebooks. LATE ARRIVALS As in the past, we ask that you call the school on the days that your child will be absent or late. This is a safety precaution that can save precious moments should there ever be an emergency situation. We thank you for your continued support in following this procedure. If your child will be late or absent from school, it is very important that you notify the school before 9:00 a.m. by leaving a voice mail message on the attendance line at 905‐792‐2268 and pressing 1, for the attendance voice mail. You should speak clearly and leave the child’s FIRST and LAST NAME, the teacher’s name, and the reason for the absence or lateness. Any student arriving at school late is required to come to the office to request a late slip. This allows us to change our attendance information, and mark your child late, rather than absent. We would also like to ask for your cooperation with afternoon dismissal. The last 30‐45 minutes of the day is extremely important in the classroom. If you need to pick your child up earlier than 3:45, we ask that you please send a note to your child’s teacher in the morning, advising them of the time required for pick up and the reason. We cannot interrupt classes during this time, for unannounced departures. P.A.L.S.
The PALS (Playground Activity Leaders in Schools) is a playground leadership program for schools and it encourages children to participate in activities during recess. The PALS program is well under way at Cardinal Newman C.E.S., implemented by some of our grades 4 and 5 students, who have been trained to work with our primary students. The leaders are outside at lunch recess in the primary yard where they allow our primary students to participate in a lot of fun, exciting and cooperative games. We thank the PALS leaders for their dedication and commitment to the program. The PALS motto is, “There is always room for one more” ALL STAR READING PROGRAM The All‐Star Reading Program is in need of volunteers. All Star Reading is a remedial program aimed at supporting struggling readers in Grades 1 and 2. Volunteers must commit to 1.5 hours weekly. The requirements to volunteer include providing a copy of your valid Criminal Background Check, an interest in working with young children and proficiency in reading and writing in English. A training session will be provided for new volunteers. If you meet the above requirements and are able to volunteer, please contact Mrs. Battista, our SERT teacher, through the school office. DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR THE WEATHER Now that the colder weather is upon us we respectfully remind you to ensure that your children come to school dressed warmly to participate in recess activities. When weather conditions are severe we may reduce the outdoor play time, or have indoor recess entirely, but fresh air and exercise are vital components for successful learning, so we will endeavour to have children play outside whenever possible. Help your children by having them come to school appropriately dressed with scarves, hats and mittens. As well, all students should have indoor footwear at school. This is essential in case of an emergency evacuation. The students will not have time to change their footwear. We also recommend that students keep extra clothing such as socks and pants at school in case their original clothing gets wet. INDOOR / OUTDOOR SHOES The students should have a pair of indoor shoes to wear at school in class and for gym. Outdoor shoes/ boots will be kept for outdoor use only and out of the classrooms in order to reduce the amount of dirt and mud brought indoors. This will assist our custodial staff in keeping the school clean. Thank you for your co‐operation. LOST & FOUND Our lost and found bin is overflowing with clothing. If your child is missing some clothing, please ask them to take a look for lost items. We welcome you to come in and take a look at the lost and found for any items that may be your child’s. It is located outside of our gym near the front foyer. During the Christmas break all clothing that is not claimed will be donated to Dr. Simone for other needy families. SAFE, CARING, INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES Cardinal Newman C.E.S. has the privilege of working alongside a number of police officers. Thank you to our Neighbourhood Policing Unit Officers, Constable G. Martin and Constable J. Neilson. Constable Abbie Frape, from the Youth Education Bureau, will be presenting on a number of topics to our Grades 1‐8 in December. Topics include bullying, cyber‐bullying and youth crime. Iron John and Iron Joan After School Program: Special thanks also to our Iron John and Iron Joan mentors from Sheridan College. These men and women have been exceptionally generous in their commitment to our students and staff. Their presence and example have had a profoundly positive effect on the lives of our children and we are extremely grateful for their compassionate dedication to our community. Please note that during Sheridan College’s Christmas Break, the Iron John and Iron Joan after‐school programs will not run: December 15th, 2014 – January 9th, 2015. The last week of the program is December 12th, 13th, and 14th, 2014. The program will resume on a weekly basis beginning January 13th,, 2015. The Iron John and Iron Joan program will end for the school year on April 24th, 2015. VOLUNTEERING ON TRIPS & AT SCHOOL The D.P.C.D.S.B. policy is that volunteers working in the school and supervising any school trips MUST have a valid Criminal Background Check. The original must be brought to the main office for verification and photocopying by office staff. A copy will be kept on file at the school and the original returned to you. Application forms for Criminal Reference Checks can be obtained through the school office. Volunteers must complete the application and take to the police station for processing. AFTER‐SCHOOL: BUS AND NON‐BUS STUDENT AREAS Bus students are reminded that they MUST have their bus tag attached to their backpack in an easily visible location so teachers can check as you board the bus. Also, bus students MUST line up, FDK‐Grade 8, in front of their assigned pylon in the kindergarten courtyard IMMEDIATELY at the bell. Students who fail to follow this rule may have bus privileges suspended. Non‐bus students waiting to be picked up at the end of the day are reminded that they must wait in the fenced courtyard area in front of the library windows. Presently there is a great deal of student traffic causing congestion at the front of the school. NO students should be waiting anywhere on the sidewalk area in front of the school. The sidewalk area must be clear for the safe boarding of bus students. PLASP CHILD CARE SERVICES PLASP Child Care Services operates Before and After School Programs at this school.
